At about 2 minutes: Is hole in your basement wall under a first floor fireplace? If so, do you eventually plan to burn wood in that fireplace? Because, what you may have there is an ash pit, for receiving wood ash from the firebox, to be cleaned out later after it’s cooled off. If it’s an ash pit it would have originally had an iron door to contain the ashes.

Kaleb, you’ve become a Jack of all trades. You pretty much self taught yourself in how to do what you’ve been doing. Of course I realize you’ve read up on much of it n even watched some Utube too. It really amazes me at how well you’ve done. I give you so much credit n lots of pats on the back. Everything you’ve done looks fantastic. Be proud of yourself as you deserve it n much more. You’ve become a builder, you’ve done masonry, plumbing, painting to rebuilding old machinery. Yep, you’re a Jack of all trades n I love all of what you’ve done. Hope weather will start getting better n better to get busy on the outside. ♥️♥️😊👍👍👍👍🌟🌟

Normally you want to use an antfreeze sillcock which drains the water back out of the filler pipe . I see you added an interior shutoff, (those can eventually leak) but in our cold midwestern weather? Keeping all the water out of the pipe going through the wall can be critical because if you do leave the outside open, freeze can transmit through the pipe into the basement and can cause freezing. You might consider replacing that elbow with a T fitting and spigot so you could completely drain that pipe in winter. Its also handy to have a hose fitting inside for cleaning.
@ritatharp52389 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience.
@solarbirdyz9 ай бұрын
Yep. You've got to be able to drain that line, particularly if you've run copper outside. (Galvanized will tolerate freezing far, far better than copper will. Copper shatters. It's better in every other way, but not in that way.)
@historyfound9 ай бұрын
What he did is fine. Before winter shut off at the interior, then open the exterior to drain the leg through the wall. Its been done this way forever throughout cold climates. Only time this will be a problem is if it’s not well sealed around the pipe thru the wall, which could cause cold air jet on the inside pipe to freeze it.
@historyfound9 ай бұрын
@@solarbirdyz copper does not shatter. It is malleable and will typically split open when it freezes with water in it. Galvanized pipe is no longer used for domestic water supplies…poor longevity.
@solarbirdyz9 ай бұрын
@@historyfoundFine. "Shatter" wasn't the best word - though I've seen frozen copper split badly enough that it looked like a shatter. It will _split_, if you prefer. Regardless, the point remains: galvie survives freezes that copper won't, and that's why it was used then in applications like this, like it was on my 110 year old house. If you're going to have copper going outside, you can do it, but you have to make sure you have no trapped water in it, or it'll split on you. And without a way to vent the segment you're draining, you can get trapped water.

The wall turned out great! Could it be that the black stuff was cole? I remember in my childhood home (build in 1904) we had a cellar where the cole for several ovens in the house was stored. On the other hand, your basement is too open for this. It would have been a small room preferable with an opening to the outside for bringing in the cole...🤔. Well, anyway- great job, beautiful cat❤.

The chimney was probably for the house incinerator, used to burn trash. Any house of that size would've had one, and that's where it would've been. Also, victorianantiquities below said it but I'm echoing it: you've got to be able to drain that line completely and right now you'll have trapped air, particularly since you've run copper outside. (Galvanized will tolerate freezing far, far better than copper will, which is why outdoor runs were usually galvie. Copper shatters. It's better in every other way than galvie, but not in that way.) So add a T-stop and a second cutoff to fully drain that line going out.

the plus side to having a small fire place is the chimney could be used for ventilation of basement or maybe for a small kitchenette who knows.
@ImpyChan9 ай бұрын
That's looking really great, and I imagine the lime mortar will have something of a brightening effect on the lower stones, too, once you get to repointing there. I would be very nervous running copper to the outside like that... I might have done an insulated pex line through the wall itself, and copper only where it would be seen on the inside of the wall, so that it's a short run which won't have water in it in winter and also won't be exposed to outside winter temperatures. (I also probably would have made sure my masonry in that area would be easy to remove just a small section of it should I ever need to service that pipe, because I am paranoid like that. 😂) But on the plus side, that spigot and the copper pipe really do look beautiful! If you're careful about draining it and shutting it off once temperatures drop, you probably won't have any problems with it, and even if you do ever have issues, you now know enough to be confident that despite the hassle of it you're fully capable of fixing whatever might come up. So probably the sheer beauty is worth the risk.
