Good morning Russ. I'm actually upset for all those e-bike riders in that town that placed a 60 day ban on e-bikes in Florida. There's too many factors that we don't know about the accident except that it was a lady 66 yrs old not wearing a helmet on a regular bike and a 12 yrs old wearing a helmet on an e-bike. About stopping at stop signs, the way you do is the same way everyone riding here in Victoria BC Canada. Thank You for this video 😎

there are stupid old people too who don't wear helmets, get killed, and then rile up knee jerk reactionists who don't bother to think rationally about the actual thing they are being reactionary about. if it was just young people, regulating them would be a non issue the same way so many other things are regulated for them. are kids wreckless? maybe. is that leading to more serious injuries than anything else they are doing as an alternative? not sure. is it actually worth the cost to regulate without knowing that? no. Will it fix issues not involving kids? no. can you regulate people to be good at riding, driving, or walking in public? no. ebikes are inevitable. the costs of driving are too high economically and environmentally. banning them simply wont work and won't be enforcible as such laws will just end up being taken down. at least in larger localities. i am guess tiny towns will be sol. luckily i don't live in a tiny town.

Instead of going after the ones breaking traffic laws and putting others in danger, they just make a blanket law that hurts law abiding folks and most likely will be ignored by the ones that prompted the law to begin with. Thanks. As to the stopping at stop signs issue: I always stop at four-way stop intersections, which are usually in higher traffic areas. My experience is that drivers are usually situationally blind when it comes to two-wheeled vehicles (no matter how brightly lit up the bike is and whether or not the rider is wearing high vis clothing). In neighborhoods, I tend to follow your practice and have not had any real issues.

Russ, So glad to see you broadcasting! You’re knowledge and personality is priceless! I always pray for your health too! I’m in Florida and this is the first I’ve heard of the ban of 60 days. I’m an advocate for Ebikes as well as Ebike safety, I actually am a dealer for Magicycle now. I have so many orders from the residents of the Florida Keys. We had a meeting on a county level about the use of Ebikes in the Florida Keys and we are working to designate one side of the US 1 highway to Ebikes only, the other side of the highway will be for regular bikes and pedestrians. We have a unique situation here on the islands with tourists and residents during snow bird vacationers, 6 months we have incredible traffic and the other 6 months we have less tourists and schools are out for summer as well. I had a couple of close calls when I first rode my Ebike down here, and the close calls for regular cyclists are an issue as well, so our county ( Monroe, FL.) is working with myself and other Ebike riders/dealers on making it safe for all riders and pedestrians. I have found that I can easily afford to add my Ebike to my auto insurance and I’m covered no matter which Ebike I use. Keep up the good work on your broadcasting and take care of your health, we want to see you broadcasting as long as possible! Thanks Russ for always being right! 🤗🙏🏼👋

It's okay to have an arsenal in your home, but an ebike is dangerous. 😂 But are we surprised? We knew all along that the few would ruin it for the rest of us... 🤷 I always repeat it; on an ebike, especially the ones that are crazy fast, KEEP A LOW PROFILE. Don't attract attention. If you're riding in traffic at 40, faster than the cars around you, what do you expect will eventually happen? You shot yourself in the foot, multiple times.

Russ, just something for you to consider. I know your knee situation. I, myself have 2 “partial” knee replacements. Something that has been a GREAT solution for me is a pedal forward bike design. I have two bikes with this frame design. One I put together myself using a bike that I added a front hub motor to. Really a comfortable ride! The other bike is a Day6 brand bicycle. Day6 bikes are from Kelly Hutson in Iowa. The forward design allows you to put your feet on the ground when stopping and keeping your butt in the seat. I really enjoy your videos! Good luck with your diabetes and your knees. Hope you check out Day6. Doug Price, Uniontown, Ohio

Hey on the subject of regulations we as a Ebike community need to get involved in the process instead of just talking and complaining about it. If we are part of the process then we have an opportunity to shape it to something we can live with. Yes to safety training Yes to some type of age restrictions Yes to supporting Ebike classes and where each class can be ridden No to Ebike bans No to after market modifications that change the original designation of the bike No to after market modification to add a second battery , if we need a second battery then buy a bike for a manufacturer that supports dual batteries It seems the need for ebike registration is due to modifications made after sales that essentially change the designation of the ebike and from all the overpowered bikes being sold that are over the legal description of an ebike 750w USA/ 500w Canada/250w EU. For bikes or other electric vehicles that exceed these Ebike standards then a regulation for those so that there is a discernible difference. So that a 1000 w + motor bike that is capable of speeds in excess of 28mph is not lumped in the same category as a class 1,2, or 3. When I spoke to my insurance company about my Ebike I had to confirm it meet our Provincial regulations of 500 Watts power and maximum power assisted speed of 32 kph (yes Canadian) If regulations are coming then I think we could all live with these verses Ebike Bans.

Lets not forget to include the electric two-wheeled stand-up on "razr-type" gadgets, and battery operated hover boards, plus those "One-wheel" devices, and last but not least, the battery operated skateboards, or the souped-up fancy battery operated golf carts that are driven in neighborhoods. See, once "they" see that the regs and fees can be implemented, it'll never stop.

Interesting comment. I have a 750 watt in the US and I lowered the maximum AMPs from 25 to 18. So my guess is that it probably is equivalent to 500 watt. I did this because it increases the range and I’m still going fast enough (faster than on a regular bike)
@cooloutac
@cooloutac 6 ай бұрын
@@MumfordJim Ya i lowered my class 3 to a class 2 to abide by NJ law. The law always stated you can turn a class 2 into a class 3 as long as you change the sticker and get licensed, registered and insured, because as most of us know ebikes can be unlocked in the comptuer. I basically just did the opposite because my bike came unlocked. And just like you even if I throttle at 20mph I'm not getting very far with my weight lol. I wouldn't even make it 10 miles where with pedal assist averaging 15mph I can get 30-40. I use my ebike mainly for transportation and workouts. The problem is society is not educated enough on the different types of ebikes. They think its a motorcycle cause they see the average guy just throttling and joy riding on his class 3 or illegal bike. This new bill does nothing to address that.

@@EBikeBuilder_ They actually don't. Their above class 3 which makes them illegal at the federal level. If I remember correctly Class 3 is a bike with no throttle, or a throttles to 20 and pedal assists to 28mph. A Class 2 is a bike that is capped at 20mph throttle and assist. Class 1 has no throttle. all with max 750 watt engine. In NJ it was against the law to ride a class 3 without license, insurance and registration since 2019. But it makes no sense why they would want to punish all ebikers because of the surron hooligans who are already breaking vehicle and traffic laws. Your analogy with guns is apt - this is the problem... No one minds someone owning a rifle (for hunting) or even a hand gun for 'protection' (or a musket when the constitution was written) - but when people start strapping a 1000w motor with a throttle to their bicycles and hurtling around at 40mph on cycle trails, that is the equivalent of an AR15 - which in the wrong hands (and with no regulation) is more often lethal and open to abuse.

I also have issues with full stops at stop signs. Due to a leg injury it would be more dangerous to stop. Mounting and starting takes time. During that time the traffic pattern may change. I need to pay attention to traffic not mounting and moving. If I must stop then I would be safer walking the bike across. That can kill the reason I ride. If I am on my trike, stopping/starting is no issue. It is probably safer at this point.

Hi Russ. Firstly thanks for a great Channel which I have followed from near start. Here in Spain all ebikes with throttle are banned. Secondly Max speed some 15 mph with pedelec assistance. Also many áreas such as beach walkways ebikes are banned nationally. The good news here in Spain bikeways and intertown bike ways have and are being constructed. . They are great. I have a full knee replacement and over 70. I find having to pedelec without throttle for motor assist is great . Even through full Weight on replacement knee can be a touch painfull initially. Now a year later replacement knee with daily exercise and pilatis works near 100%.Appreciate everybody is different.. So my opinión is after three years experience with a Trek Avant plus 5 is that 23kph is suficiente. Your USA ebikes level 2 and 3 are effectively motor bikes according to EU law. Remember and reflect normal bikes without an electric motor do around 12-15mph Max when cruising. Bikers need to respect people walking and vice versa. Hence motor bike grade ebikes with throttle that can do 25moh plus is frankly a no go. A danger to pedestrians , especially in town City áreas. My comments are from active experience. It is not a question of regulation or deregulation but safety for all. Bottom line ebikes with throttle are motor bikes according to EU law. Should the USA follow?

It is not political. I’m often surprised seeing people riding crazy. Like riding the wrong way on a one way street. People ride towards me in the bike lane going the wrong way. It is amazing. I have a small section of my ride each day that I ride briefly on the sidewalk. I do this because the bike lane goes away partway. It is unsafe to be on the road in this section. If someone is walking I dismount, but rarely is that necessary. The rest of my 1 1/2 mile ride is totally in the bike lane. I wish I didn’t need to ride on the sidewalk, but it is safer and I have never been stopped for this. Bikers need to be courteous it really makes a difference. Things like letting people know you are passing them ON THE LEFT if possible. Courtesy is everything.

I have to step in here to rattle the bee hive. Diamond-frame bikes both electric and “acoustic” are inherently unstable at low speed and top heavy especially in emergency stops. I’ve been riding recumbents for years and find that stopping is not an inconvenient hardship as I don’t get off the seat to stay upright. ‘Bents aren’t perfect nor appealing to most people. But, if you choose an unstable bicycle when stopped, then putting a foot down at a stoplight is the price you pay to be one of the gang. My humble two cents.

@@ntfriz12 ya thats the catch, you have to get motorcycle insurance. Even bike underwriters like Merkel wouldn't cover my ebike. And the catch with motorcycle insurance is you had to be licensed , insured and registered, and at the time in 2019 it was not even possible to register your ebike. So in NJ its always been a soft ban on class 3 bikes essentially without saying thats what it was. I'm not sure if anything has changed or if this is now essentially a ban on all ebikes. But I'm looking at velosurance now with liability coverage and they specify ebike classes in the application. not sure what is written into the actual policy though. But I remember when i went down this rabbit hole a few years ago I bought two policies I ended up having to cancel a day later when getting the fine print and conversing with the underwriters. Markel was one of them and progressive was another. I'm not sure if the insurance industry and motorvehicle departments have even caught up yet over 4 years later.

ya thats why in those cases you have to hog the lane at the intersection and ignore the car honking at you. Or if it is a right turn only lane, then you split the left and right lanes to let them pass you on the right, which is where bike lanes are supposed to go and which those states should definitely be making rather then punishing drivers. What happens is bikers hug the right side at the intersection in the right hand lane and then the car cuts them off on their left, because the car thinks you are making a right turn. Alot of bikers definitely need to learn hand signals and how to ride properly on the road.

I read articles about the accident in Key Biscayne FL. Supposedly the 66yr old women was killed by a 12yr old e-bike rider. The women WAS NOT wearing a helmet. Seems to me there must be a age restriction in order to ride just like operating a motorcycle or car. In response to New Jersey, the best thing to do is have a designation on everyone's drivers license for e-bikes just like they do in FL for motorcycles. In FL you have to take a motorcycle driving course before you can get the designation on your license. Same thing could be done for e-bikes. This solves 2 problems. Age and ability. It would also be beneficial to e-bike owners like Russ who own and operate multiple bikes.

It's neither democrat nor republican; It's bureaucrats, some who like control and some that really care about safety. Wherever there are there are complaints there will be attention; the squeaky wheel gets the grease as they say. E- bikes are in the infantile stages of acceptance into society. Reckless operations help no one. It permeates almost any activity, particularly inherently dangerous ones. Motorcycling, regular bicycling, drone operation, to name a few. As operators of these devices, we need to use them responsibly. We also need to become educators to help wash away societal ignorance and be advocates for our chosen hobbies. Being new to the e-bike world, one of the things I see is how e-bikes cross into the unpowered world of Bicycling all the way into the motorcycling realm. I ride all three. There is a time and place for each. The current 3-tiered classification addresses the lower end of the spectrum, however there is nothing that covers the other end. This leaves a free for all world for higher powered Bikes to operate as the operator sees fit, many times irresponsibly. The 3-tiered system does not come close to gaining any control on e-bikes as technology pushes the limits in both the open and aftermarket. It has already become obsolete with many bikes being shipped that can be programmed to be a class 2 or 3 and sometimes all three and beyond. Better understanding, definition and classification needs to happen most skosh to help mitigate government knee jerk reactions. I lived through the 60 minutes expose’ on Jeep rollovers, then Suzuki Samurai. Jeeps survived are still around and as popular as ever; Suzuki Samurai did not. That same thing happened with 3 wheelers, ATCs went away and became ATVs and again, are still around and as popular as ever. Buckle up folks the e- bike community is headed for a bumpy ride like what is going on in the Drone community and has taken place before. Be responsible, be an educator and advocate. Remember, “we don’t quit playing because we get older; we get older because we quit playing.”

I do have to wonder if these politicians give any consideration to how and whether the police are supposed to enforce these laws they pass. Do they really think the police are going to stand at the entrance to every tail and ask to see every e-bike's proof of insurance? Or are we going to have to start taking our e-bikes in for an annual "safety" inspection? I think it's only a matter of time before we see the latter somewhere. Politicians created the problem by designing cities for cars, not people, and now they'll do everything they can think of EXCEPT the things that would actually fix the problems, i.e. improved infrastructure for pedestrians, bikes, and transit.

I have a lot to say and at my age, that said, I could drop dead before getting it all out. Gun owners have the NRA, Amateur Radio Operators have the ARRL, I'LL Stop there. What we need is a large organization that represents all bicycling, electric or human powered. Some might say "Why would you want to include human powered bikes"? Because it's my experience out on the road, people's dislike for human powered bikes is right behind electric bikes. I'm sure all of us that have waited until it's safe to pass a bicyclist while driving our car have met up with someone behind us that didn't appreciate our care for the safety of someone on a bicycle human powered or not. I think we are all in this together more than we may initially think. I also think the same energy, acceptance and money that has been put towards human powered bikes should be applied to electric bikes as they share so many similarities. Maybe think about this. The person walking with their children on a path has a bicycle blast by them maybe a little too close or maybe a little too fast, does anyone think this person cares what was powering the bicycle? I think the clear answer would be no. United we win, divided we fail.

So maybe as the purist of the pure bicyclists are having a back slapping moment over this, it may come to them at some point. This was a point I was trying to make without saying it. We should be in this together. On the above class 3 bikes that obviously aren't covered by any of this, most law enforcement in the state has radar, portable or vehicle installed. Good morning Russ. Greetings! Regulation is necessary just like regulation has helped the cannabis industry. Different area have different dominant style riders and different purposes. Out east there is a lot of theft and business use of e-bikes like in Europe so legislation and insurance would be useful to them. The incident you mentioned in Florida where one was older and the other younger seemed to lean on the speed deletes side of things. Some Ebike enthusiast would have no interest in them if speed were not a byproduct. My concern is not necessarily the speed by that these products fall into the hands of careless minded individuals who push the limits of risk for the thrill of it which can lead to injury of the innocent at the cost of foolishness. Speaking of cost ebike manufacturer's and could begin to face large lawsuits because of the reckless use by those speedy ebikes riders which will force companies to sell manufacturing operations which in turn will cause a loss in the parts integrity that's required to maintain our current ebikes for years to come. There are business model solutions that could hedge against this phenomenon but that's for another day.
