Suggestion for announcing the first westbound train in passenger service. "Bletchley, this is Bletchley, The train now at platform 8 is for Oxford. We apologise for the 57 year delay to your journey."

Fantastic stuff!! Let’s get the rest of the line sorted and hopefully in the future they can electrify the whole route

the fact the route isn't electrified from day one is a mistake in my books, but oh well

I like that the Chilterns train says Merry Christmas on it, every new or reopened station or railway feels as exciting to Christmas to me! Great progress EWR!

I don't suppose you have any more cab views of the new section Bicester to Bletchley? Would be great if you have. Subscribed.

absolutely mad they built a new railway line but didn't electrify it

Yup seems mad to me too. Guess that the thinking was battery operated trains starting on electric then feed in power from normal engine, hybrid? I imagine that costs wold have rocketed, and perhaps our overloaded priority grid in this area meant even further delays? Anybody know the proper answer rather than my guesses?

@@davedave6404 can't say I know that level of detail- but I believe they did preparatory works to make it easier if they electrify all or part of the route at a later date (though I believe there are clearance issues with one existing tunnel on the route)

better to build it, run it then enhance it, Budgets, sadly: budgets...

Potentially(!) perfectly sensible for UK. If the future is Renewable Energy (I think it should be) UK's only big-enough RE resource (we have far more than we need, not much of any other kind) is offshore wind, which is extremely 'Variable' Renewable Energy. The amounts of energy we need to store utterly precludes storage-as-electricity and demands storage-as-fluid. Electric trains (in UK - it's a different argument in other places) would be wind-electricity-efuel-powerstation-electricity-motor. As good as EV drivetrains are, I'm not convinced the advantages will be great for us-here-in-UK compared to wind-electricity-efuel-motor. 'Sustainable energy' is a different problem in different places.

It's because Chiltern Railways [the operator of the new line] has no electric trains as the existing lines they run on are unelectrified

Lets just hope there are a few more people on the platform when they open it. I bicycle along bits of the old railway bed at the weekends because they did close it. The first bit was built in the 1870-something. They closed that in the 1890-something. Then BR closed the whole thing in the 1960's. This has an air of "great idea to connect Oxford to Cambridge because Betjeman wrote about them, and we will try to find a fee paying way to justify it later" about it. They haven't even chumped up to electrify it? How seriously do they believe in it? Just some old Diesel thumper from the 1970's. Beeching wanted to keep it - as a freight line. Maybe that will pay? Maybe the present "all roads lead to Rome" infrastucture is just a load of people who think they are more important than the rest of us. Well, please - that all looks like an awful lot of money, and I am still left asking who. I hope you prove me wrong.
