Zeppelin was notorious for improvisation during live performances. That’s what really made them special to see live. Their performance was never canned. Maybe not always clean and pristine but never, ever boring. Four of the most accomplished musicians in the history of Rock music. Really enjoyed your reaction, young lady.

You can say that again! Ever since my step dad showed me this when I was a kid back when we had VHS it did something inside me that I can't explain. My life was never the same and ever since that night long ago I have not stopped watching it from VHS, DVD to Blu-ray they even came out with an album of the show and now waiting for it to come out on 4k. Can't even remember how many times I've seen/listened to this. As a matter of fact I'm watching it on KZbin, forgot what I was searching for but the whole movie/concert was free to watch with ads. Led Zeppelin were famous for not playing songs the same way twice. They're just great musicians. It was fun to watch your appreciation of their blues chops on this one. Speaking as a guitar player, that high note near the end that you were curious about is most certainly Robert Plant's voice. I can't get enough of this particular version of the song. This is indeed Plant's voice. If anyone is in doubt, just look at Jimmy Page's left hand. If he played this high note, then his hand should have slid to the base of the guitar neck: this is where the strings are clamped on high notes. But he didn't. I did not immediately understand, and then I began to closely follow the guitarist, and not the singer. This is Plant's note.🙂

Another band to look at on that note (not playing the song the same way twice), listen to the Grateful Dead. Any song, it doesn’t matter, they were a jam band more than anything else. Their lives shows were an experience… even if you weren’t on anything (but I’d say only 1% of people at dead shows were not on one drug or another🤣… at least that’s what a friend told me😜🤣

The fact that you couldn't figure out where the guitar playing left off and the vocals began truly showcases why this band was one of the all time greats. The incredible talent of Jimmy Page's fingers and Robert Plant's voice is nothing short of amazing. They showed it time and time again on most of their signature songs, and I haven't even given props to the multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones and the powerhouse percussion of John Bonham. I was fortunate to see them on more than one occasion and they brought their A game to every show.

The studio version is absolutely biblical. Gives me chills the last 3 minutes of the song. Plants voice pre-1972 is the greatest male vocal I’ve ever heard and I’ve heard it all. The power he had in Zeps early days is 2nd to none including Mercurys.

Led Zeppelin's brilliance was the constant improvisation between the 4 musicians. The drummer played off the guitar licks just as much as the vocalist. They pushed themselves everynight, never playing it safe.

I saw them live in 1975 and true, he doesn't seem to use his diaphram at all. I like your reactions. i think that Zeppelin's partial success was the fact all four members stand out in each and every song on their own contributions, whether it is vocal, guitar ,bass ,or drums. They are all excellent. Peace and Love. (I am 74 and when I saw them live, tickets were only $10.50 for a non stop 3 1/2 hour gig. no frills, no auto tune, or dancers, just talent from four excellent musicians.).

Bluesy is right. Conversational is right. Improvisational is right. Soulful is right. This song actually beats out Stairway to Heaven for me. It's like a religious experience each time I listen to it. A stillness overtakes me as I listen in awe to the raw emotion being portrayed so masterfully by all the musicians in the band with each of them complimenting one another. I enjoyed your cool insights to my favorite Led Zeppelin song! As an aside, I saw them live 4 times! The first two times were at the Kinetic Playground in Chicago. Oh, were they HOT!

Each member of Led Zeppelin is a master of their craft. My favourite band of all time since 1972 when I was 12 years old. As I got older I came to appreciate their back-catalogue (which I was too young to appreciate at first) as well, and my love affair with them has continued and grown ever since.

Led Zeppelin is known most as a blues rock band. If you want to hear a great example of this listen to "When Levee Breaks" which is a cover of an ancient blues tune. In my opinion they are the greatest rock band that ever was.

Plant and Page had great instincts for blues and mastered call & response between Robert's voice and Jimmy's guitar. In "Dazed and Confused" there is an entire section that showcases such an interlude between the two. They were just a fantastic band, all 4 members locked in together so they could riff and improvise without ever losing their groove. Robert also plays harmonica but in the style of vocals; he's amazing on "When the Levee Breaks".

What always impressed me about Robert Plant live is his way of converting a song we know from a studio album and tastefully cheating, not hitting the high or intense notes on the album. He's masterful at it. He certainly goes for some of the high bits, as shown here, but is very smart in saving his voice.

Funny story about Led Zeppelin: growing up we ALWAYS had music playing in our house. Always. My dad had wired the entire house with speakers to our stereo (I’m talking early 80s) so we could put an album on and have it playing throughout the house. My mom played mostly Irish & country music. Us kids played everything from hard rock (Zeppelin, AC/DC) to disco to singer/songwriter (Cat Stevens, James Taylor). To her credit, my mom just loved music & never told us to take anything off. Anyway, my sister had Zeppelin playing & mom was enjoying the music. She turned to my sister and said “I like the music. Too bad the singer can’t sing.” !!!! My sister looked at her in absolute horror. “ That’s Robert Plant, mom!” We still laugh about it & say “Too bad he can’t sing” every time we hear Robert Plant. Also, I so enjoy your reactions to the music. You can tell you feel music in every bone in your body. It was a true pleasure seeing you discover Led Zeppelin. 🥰

One of the greatest exponents of 'Sprechgesang' and structural improvisation in live performances (live performances were always subtly different) - and a lot of people never realised it. Wonderful reaction! Robert is in a class all of his own - his range; phrasing; emotion and his lyric writing- so good. Led Zeppelin has a large catalog with so many different genres - but definitely blues based. FYI - Robert did have vocal issues around this time and for a few years after. I believe he eventually had cord surgery. He is still performing and has moved to traditional American music. Saw him with Alison Krauss last year - fabulous. I was introduced to Led Zeppelin’s debut album when it came out in ‘69, from an older brother when I was 16 years old. Now, at 70 years old I go back to it often. It’s classic music that will never grow old. Love watching this young woman’s expressions. Tells it all! Led Zeppelin music is the Mozart of the 1960’s & 1970’s. My grandkids are now listening to it with me in awe. I have the cd collection of all their music.

He developed nodules on his vocal cords in late 1972, which got worse through 1973. He had to have a throat operation. He's still bloody great here though, with an amazing stage presence which every woman reacting to it seems to be in awe of. I've literally watched dozens of them.

They were extremely loud, and with that ultra pro rhythm section pounding behind them, Plant and Page up front in your face literally overwhelmed audiences, especially seeing them for the 1st time.

Rock and Metal are an evolution of Blues, so it's not unusual for early bands to have an obvious blues tone to some of the music. And Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are probably the two most influential founding members of those genres.

IMO, even acknowledging a very early bluesy influence, Sabbath were extraordinary because in retrospect the alleged connection with blues now seems tenuous. They sound almost completely unrelated to anything preceding.

16:39 in the album version, when Robert sang the part “oh my tears that fell like rain.. don’t you see them fall”, the drum actually followed with the beats that imitated the emotional impact of tears falling! Love it!

If you really want to hear the progression of this song over the years they’ve been playing it live (and all their songs) go to a sight called Black Beauty. Site has 99% of all their concerts since 1968. I am especially keen on the period between 69 and 73. They’ve played it perhaps 60-70 times and each time they play it it’s different. The improv from these 4 guys are breathtaking. They are loose in their artistic freedom but tight in that they always find and feed off each other. Not too many bands can achieve this each and every time they go on stage

The last time I saw Robert Plant perform live, was June 26, 2018; with my 30yr old daughter and 3yr old granddaughter (pretty cool experience! watching us three generations rocking out to Whole Lotta Love); I hadn’t seen Robert Plant since I saw Led Zeppelin July 17, 1977 at the Kingdome in Seattle. A lot of people rag on his vocals later on in his career, and its mostly justified, he did lose a few steps, but in the early 70's I don't think there was anyone who could compare to his soulful stage presence. Legitimately the greatest frontman of his generation.

I saw Plant in the 90's a few times... He had that Elvis vocal change. And has lived with those changes since. So NO, not many can keep those screams up. Paul Rogers, Tom Jones, Robin Zander and Elvis got better as years ticked by.

Great choice. The first time I saw Zep I wanted to see if his voice was for real. And it was. But I never understood how they could play every night or two and not be deaf. They were extremely loud. And mind blowing.

Just discovered your channel, great reaction! That is an iconic performance and I was fortunate to be at that show July 29, 1973… The original version of the song was released in 1970. Believe it or not three years later as powerful and high pitched Robert Plant sounds, from all the touring he lost a good amount of power and range since three years earlier. If you want your mind really blown, please listen to the original studio version!

Great reaction .... LZ did about 80% of their 700+ 2-4hr concerts/shows between 68-73. They did not release singles (very few and always forced by the label) and promoted the albums this way, as they also did not use TV or other media methods of the time (ie: interviews ect ...) to promote their music. Plant had vocal surgery not long after these tours. They took a full year off and worked on the double album release for 75, but Robert Plant was never the godlike phenom he was when he broke in and shocked the industry. Listen to studio or live from 1969-70, you will not be disappointed!

Plant developed nodules on his vocal cords in late 1972, which got worse through 1973. He later had to have a 'secret' throat operation to get rid of them. He still hadn't fully recovered when Zeppelin recorded Physical Graffiti, and you can hear a cool raspiness in his voice on the songs recorded for that album in 1974.

@@lyndoncmp5751 Several tracks that were added to PG were earlier recordings and studio work that did not make it onto previous albums. This accounts for the variances in his vocals from track to track on this (what turned into) double album (15 tracks). The albums and other musical ventures that came afterward were tremendous efforts and produced more timeless music. I don't want anyone to think I am saying Robert was not fabulous going forward! I (and apparently others here) are just stating facts about his sound having to evolve as the years went on.

@@johnwalsh9144 Indeed, and you can tell the difference in Plant's vocals. The raspiness on Custard Pie (recorded post operation in 1974) vs the high pitch on Houses of the Holy (recorded pre operation in 1972) to name just one example of the different voices he had.

Those of us who loved Led Zeppelin have always considered them a blues/rock ballad band. One of the best bands ever. I played for my wife on a road trip who really had never heard them and is now a huge fan.

The studio version has the most incredible blues guitar solo ever recorded. I was fortunate enough to see Zeppelin live in 1971, 1973, and 1975. In Florida. Their live performances were incredible.

Yes, the coordination between all members of the band but especially Robert (singer) and Jimmy (guitar) is spectacular. You can see in so many of their live performances how they use call and response back and forth with each other - much of it, I assume is improvised!! That's why they are the greatest rock and roll band to ever exist. Great reaction. Please keep going. Studio, live, it doesn't matter. They are masters wherever they go.

Bonham and plant knew each other before the band was formed. Jimmy page was a session musician in his teens and JPJ was the real musician in the band playing Bass sometimes foot bass whilst playing the keyboards Jimmy page invented many guitar production methods including pedals. Many of their albums were recorded at Headley Grange a few miles from where I live.

You know what's amazing (and crazy) about Robert Plant's vocals, If you watch the movie "Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same" right before this song he is smoking cigarette backstage. He was a smoker and was still able to perform for two three hours at a time

He lost his ability to hit certain notes by the mid 70s. You can see the transition happen on Physical Graffiti. Since then his voice is still the same. He can do all of the later Zeppelin stuff just fine. The earlier stuff he does differently, but not really much differently than he did in 1979.

@@garrygrasinski I never saw LKZ live but I did see Page twice and Plant three times. The last time I saw Plant was around 2005. He played one Zep song to one new one throughout the concert. The Zep songs he rearranged with a North African feel. it worked.

This has to be one of the best performances of all time, in my opinion. The talent, tightness of the band, and vocal range are all just astounding. I've watched it hundreds of times and am almost brought to tears, every time he hits that last apex, near the end: SO THRILLING! Has to be one of the most mesmerizing, erotic, AMAZING performances I've ever seen! Really showcases their cohesiveness as a band. The call and response is amazing, as it always is with Led Zepplin...and, you add JPJ's bass and Bonzo's amazing drumming (usually in a very different time signature than the rest of the song with their catalog): you just CANNOT get much BETTER THAN THIS! Blues at its best. I first heard Led Zeppelin when I was in the army and very sick with pneumonia in a hospital. Someone had a tape recorder with a tape of Zeppelin in it. I borrowed it and played it non-stop for days, just mesmerized and dumbfounded (in a good way). I was 19 at the time.
