So many people sleep on Gretsch. A big hollow body Gretsch with Filtertrons can get literally nearly any sound on the planet all the while having a sound 100% all it’s own that no other guitar can really do. Just heavenly.

Chet Atkins was hired at a fairly young age at a radio station. He had to learn, figure out parts for and arrange songs on a daily basis, which pushed him to develop an extraordinary musical ability. He mixed in his admiration for Merle Travis, and the result was a very distinctive style and sound. He was also a frustrated singer. Unlike his brother, he did not have a powerful, Sinatra-like singing voice, so he tried to make his guitar sing for him. And if my memory serves me well, he produced Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel" among other gems.

To my ears, Gretsch are the most analog-sounding of electric guitars. There’s a very full, organic, heft about them with an almost see-through quality to the sound without the congestion that I typically hear from most humbucker-equipped guitars.

The one Gretsch pickup they didn’t cover was the HiLo’tron. Those are my favorite single Gretsch coils: top end chime like a DeArmond with that shimmering, see-through midrange, but they wail when you crank up the gain. Amazing sound.

Crikey. In the dog house. Watched this Friday. Saturday popped into PMT and bought a Gretch ! Have to say, for a £ 700 Korean made guitar it’s great. In fact the frets are far better dressed than the Leslie. Lovely tone. And despite reservations stays in tune. Going through some songs with my mate this pm, wacked the capo on third fret and still in tune. Wow. It definitely has a vibe about it, so very pleased.

You simply can’t go wrong with any of the gretsch guitars in the range. Streamliner, electromatic, players. All of them are extremely amazingly built. I always use my electromatic next to my custom shop 355, and les Paul custom. They sound about 99% there. Can not argue with the price for the gretsch, better built and sound than any epiphones, squire, MIM fender I’ve owned and played.

That Pedal Show We could do with a show on Rickenbacker that goes well beyond the twelve string sound covered by Mr Gregory. A show that doesn’t simply define Rickys against Les Paul’s and Strats. From John Fogarty to Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, there is something about Rickys that, like Danelectro and Gretsch, interacts with effects and amplification in a new world of tonal possibilities. But perhaps it would require stretching beyond the comfortable and familiar?

As a Strat player for many years, (favourite) and many other brands too, this video not only had me subscribe, but change my mind totally about the Gretsch brand. I guess because when I was growing up, it was everything from the Shadows to Jimi, and the American country scene was like another world, which then caused more derision than respect. I added treble bleed to my 5420T for under $10, just a 1nF capacitor in parallel with a 150k resistor across the input and output of the main volume pot. WORTH IT! Made the guitar much more usable. Hint: You will need to remove the 3-way switch to get the pots out of the F hole. Use string (on the 3-way switch) and aquarium tubing (on pot shafts) before unscrewing them. Makes the reinstallation a snap.

It isn’t said enough in my opinion that Mick is a phenomenal player. I always find myself really enjoying how he’s able to take what i dare say is a narrower range of influence than Dan’s (i’m sorry if that’s presumptuous or off-base!), and make it fresh and interesting in many different contexts. One of my favorite things about this show is how it’s opened my eyes to how blues can be applicable to all sorts of situations and genres, when i used to write it off without much thought.

I will start by saying I'm almost 69 years old, born in 1954. Rock & Roll was booming, watched The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, loved the intricate guitar work of Roy Clark on Hee Haw, and the talent of Glenn Campbell. Was a huge fan of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson... all of them. Yes, first and foremost a Country fan. My buddies said 'No country!', until folks requested it, and then I had to play it 'on the fly'. Those were the days. Thank god I have full finger movement and 'stretch'. I started guitar lessons at about 10 years old, and of course, had a small band with my best friends in later teens.... small easy wedding banquets, and one gig at a bar/restaurant with a long local history. We weren't even 'of age' yet, but no one really cared then. I had a non-descript hollow body electric and cheap amps which did the job, barely, but then again, no one cared. We did the best we could lol. Then in my 20's, I sold it all. Damn, that was stupid. I've used a now 40 year old Vantage acoustic ever since. Nice guitar.... but something has been seriously lacking in my enthusiasm the last several years, and I knew what it was. Just recently I purchased a BOSS Katana MkII 50 watt amp (did a lot of research for my personal needs and taste), and now saving for the guitar I really want. I have pretty much always been a Gretsch fan... nothing else will do. I'm pretty sure this will be the last guitar I will ever buy, and as far as I'm concerned, vintage all the way. Being retired, I will stick to my attainable means, but this is it. G5427TFM Electromatic Hollow Body Single-Cut with Bigsby, Tiger Flame Maple, Laurel Fingerboard - Orange Stain. I guess my point is.. after all these years... my new guitar will be a Gretsch.

My main guitar is a Telecaster Cabronita Thinline (with Filtertrons) and my main three influences are... Billy Duffy, Pete Townshend and Malcom Young. It’s just an awesome rock guitar - clear and punchy like nothing else!

I applaud you for not following what everyone else does... by copying everyone’s else gear to try to get the same result... I’m 48 and for years I just played what ever my favorite artist was playing to try to get the tone they did.. not realizing that the main part of the chain is the player... and equipment sounds different depending on who is playing it.... if I had a time machine I would have followed your approach... bravo, bravo.

Gabrielle - I'm with you about the guitarists although as a scooterist Pete Townshend edges it for me. I also made my own "El Cabron" guitar which plays and sounds fantastic. When I made it I put a set of TV Jones Classic pickups in it but since then I've discovered Roswell FLT Filtertron style pickups that cost a fraction of the price of TV Joneses, around £25 each compared to £125 each, and are every bit as good, if not better than the TV Jones so I've decided to sell the expensive ones and keep the Roswells.....check them out on the dv247 website 👍

Thanks for this! I purchased a Gretsch G6131T-62 Vintage Select 62' Jet Firebird for a steal a year or so ago and haven't spent any time playing it. You guys did an excellent job of forcing me to pick on it for your entire show. Thank you for your discussion! I am now enthralled and will probably spend the weekend playing and researching. Another awesome show!

Big fan of the show here. Been a Gretsch player for 3 years now and one of the first things I noticed is that it is a truly unique guitar. One of the first questions that popped into my mind when I got my Gretsch was "what pedals could I use". More in terms of overdrive/fuzz/distortion. I've been experimenting a lot, but always an opinion from people like you is gold. So I was happy to hear Mick say in the beggining of the video, that questions like "what overdrive should I use" will be answered. I have been searching the internet for opinions, and finally I would get an answer from my favourite presenters! Instead, all I got was a history retrospective and two people jamming in a long 50 minuite video. I would love to have seen you guys analysing what pedals/amps/settings would work for what occasion, like you have done in previous (especially your first) videos. I will try to watch it again in case i missed something. Anyway, I still love you!

Hello! You’re right - this would warrant a follow up. It dawned on me that we took some things for granted here, mainly that we just knew the Broadcast would work, especially being able to really shape the bottom end - where a thicker, less tonally neutral drive, or something that rolls off too much high, would work less maybe. Definitely worth exploring. Again, we know the Tumnus is a great boost for pretty much anything and the D&M Drive can be tweaked for pretty much anything. So we made some decisions without really explaining it. There are 20 more shows here.... :9)

Gretsch are just crazy good guitars. Low-end to high-end, just excellent. And they definitely are among my favorite antidotes for the "I can't watch another Tele, Strat, SG, LP" video.

I saw Chet at the legendary Oslo, Norway, show on April 15, 1964. He played his famous G6122-1959 Country Gentleman. The live sound was indescribeable compared to the studio recordings, which were excellent in themselves. I finally got my own G6122 in 2011. Better late than never! That show is available on KZbin for all to see.

I used to be very into a rockabilly group called Reverend Horton Heat from Texas, and their lead singer/guitarist had his own signature 6120 that was absolutely beautiful. I pined after a bright orange Chet Atkins model after that for a long time, but the Fender/Gibson bug caught me quicker!
