Remember. Before electric light, the easiest way to get around at night was to wait until the full moon. Hence why certain cultures plant/harvest based on lunar cycle. It's much more pleasant to do field work on a cool, moonlit, night vs on a hot summer afternoon. So we have developed a propensity to be more active during full moons.
@dkaroun2 жыл бұрын
I think your right about thinking about before electricity but dont forget we have primarily been a hunting and gathering species (up to 10,000 years of farming on and off for some cultures and 300,000 + years of hunting/foraging as a species. Data is pretty clear that light from a full moon greatly affects hunting (because of light availability/ mating (because of evolutionary fitness associated with syncing) in many other animals.

We would occasionally go to a Lyon's Restaurant (now defunct) and my favorite thing there was the root beer float. It was in a tall glass (maybe a sundae glass?) and had whipped cream on top. Regarding point one, I just recently wondered about full-moon related insomnia as my kid woke up at 2AM wanting to play. I have I hypothesis - maybe full moon reflects not only visible light but also shorter wavelenghts such as UV? Maybe the excess of UV radiation during the night (most of our UV comes from the sun, so our bodies read UV - day, no UV - night) somehow messes up the synthesis of melatonin or just breaks our circadian rythm? That is actually a quite an interesting topic :)

When we have phones lights indoors and on the streets, its unreasonable to expect that moonlight would still be effective at synchronizing menstruation. @@JRLB38 the research didn't account for the change in sleep patterns and how they effect individuals that are already mentally unstable. I can also confirm EXTREME changes in behavior outside of the expected from working in an alzheimers/dimentia unit, and we expected severe behavioral changes as the norm. This is why when I review any research papers I check for the variables accounted and not accounted for, and for studies on people and their behavior I check for the socioeconomic status of the population researched, as well and the geological regions included in the study to account for regional normative differences. Many people don't realize just how much you have to check for when breaking down a study to check its validity. You also need to check to see if it's peer reviewed, what the control group consisted of and how they performed the study. Randomly checking police logs won't obtain accurate statistics as there are plenty of officers willing to overlook some odd behavior because they believe the full moon has an impact, same with any non-injurious behavior exhibited by mental health facility tennants not being documented. The research team would be required to actually start with fresh data and connect with several medical facilities and police departments to convince them to document every occurence of unusual behaviour to get an accurate assessment of the moons effect on people's behavior and mood, and should account for not just the night of the full moon but the 3 nights before and after. It would also be best to choose varying geographical regions on a longitudinal path to account for the earths orientation to the moon. In short, a robust and comprehensive study would cost more and take longer than researchers are able/willing to contribute on what is already widely considered a myth.

Actually the full moon does affect people. I worked as an X-ray tech in the ER for 24 years. Everyone in the ER knew that we would be extra-busy on full moon nights, particularly with accidents and self-inflicted injuries. Sometimes the hospital would even put on an extra staff member for a full moon night. On a "normal" night when things would get really crazy, say with multiple MVAs, shootings or heart attacks we would often joke that "it must be a full moon night". Ask anyone who has worked in emergency medicine and they will tell you that the full moon makes a big difference!

Circolunar rhythm would explain why stats collected by the emergency services in the UK have shown that crimes & injuries (usually related to crime, such as drunken behaviour being worse & tipping over into crime) do increase on nights when there's a full moon. Mental health issues also tend to flare up on a full moon too. I come from a medical background & have retired police officers & a serving police officer in my family & we have all observed this happening. It's not a myth. Part of my medical background comes from working in the neurophysiology department of a top UK children's hospital where they test for seizures & their different types. The melatonin theory may be right to some degree. The reason we would test for seizures by getting the patient to sleep is because they are more prone to seizure activity when they're sleeping or tired. Therefore, although (as a health scientist) I believe that melatonin may play a part, I think there are also other factors at play too.

I have no personal experience with epilepsy; but if it was strictly the lower light level during the last quarter, then wouldn't there be more seizures at the dark of the moon, or in the first quarter, coming off the dark of the moon, rather than the last quarter, when we're coming off a full moon? Is it something to do with the drop in melatonin due to more light from the full moon, perhaps? Like if melatonin helps prevent them, then it would make sense that by the time we finally get around to the last quarter, one's levels would be the lowest, thanks to having gone through the full moon, and the build-up to it. Which would mean that, historically speaking, one might not have more seizures *during* the full moon; but that it might herald a greater chance of them in the next few days, making it look like it was the moon causing the effect, if not necessarily immediately. But if it's the melatonin levels and their relationship to the levels of moonlight at the time, then it kind of does (as you said), which is intriguing. That makes me wonder if there's a correlation between levels of light pollution and seizures. Do people have fewer seizures in rural areas? Would blackout curtains and a sleep mask lower the incidence of them in urban areas? Fascinating topic!

I've often said the following as a possible explanation for menstrual coordination: In the past, male hunter/gatherers would depart during the full moon on multi-day hunting trips. It would be an ideal time for menstruation. And/or, perhaps during the new moon the darkness would require the men to be home. Recall that mating success is a major driver of evolutionary change. Generations of natural selection would favor the production of offspring from women whose menstrual cycles coordinated.

More off the wall cases. I didn't used to believe it because there isn't empirical evidence to back it up... But once I started working I can tell you when we're in/near the full moon. The first several times I had exceptionally wild days someone pointed out we were in/near a full moon. I thought no way, coincidence. In the modern age of electric lights no more crime occurs during a full moon, but absent streetlights it would have been much easier to move around at night in the middle ages and earlier times. Like many modern superstitious beliefs there was an original core of rationality behind it.

Ask any EMT/Paramedic/Policeman/Fireman/Trooper/etc, they will tell you, every single one, that full moons are the busiest nights, ones with the most injuries, deaths, calls, etc.

Okay, the menstruation one I'm curious about. All of the sources I've read that say the two are not connected, quote that same Clue app study. But isn't that terrible selection? If you're using an app to log your period, you're living in an industrialized society where you're most likely not getting very natural moon light exposure. Are there any studies on indigenous women? I think those would be informative.

What about the belief that full-term pregnant women are more likely to go into labour on the full moon? I've heard some midwives say that's not true, but that there is a spike in women being admitted to labour units when there is a thunder storm. Thoughts?

Question: what would planet Earth be like if there wasn’t a moon? I would think that the gravitational pull of the Sun would be minute as compared to that of the moon. Minimal tidal changes would have effect on weather and even plate tectonics...?

It' widely assumed that the moon stabilizes our earth's axis, so without a moon we wouldn't have regular seasons and life as we know it would not be possible. There's tons of great (scientific) videos about the moon and its effect on earth from an astrophysical standpoint btw, check them out!
