Elections are over. It is both amusing and worrisome to watch legislators' squabble and scurry around for mistrial berths. It is worrisome because in the quest for pomp and power, some crucial matters are not being discussed.
One of the most crucial matters that should be raised and finalized is the holding of the census. Since 1881, India has seen a Census being tabled every ten years, without any interruption. Thus 2021 was the first interruption in the compiling and tabling of the Census. This is turn means that India is being managed and plans are being drawn up based on the 2011 Census.
Since then, a lot has happened. We have muddied the waters about our population by the proliferation of bogus Aadhar card, bogus PAN cards, Bogus saving accounts and hence bogus election cards as well. The fact that many dead people are still shown as living also complicates matters. This has implications on finances being planned for the poor, doles being given out, taxation and financial integrity. The only way to rectify all this is through the compilation of the Census on a war footing.
