YES. Honestly I’d have preferred that to what happened, with the show writers breaking up the established pairings offscreen just to awkwardly force Marco and star together bc the fans shipped it. I may have a slight grudge towards the shows later seasons..

personally i think it makes more sense with the character's personalities to be in these. Tom and Marco's dynamic is similar to marcy and bubblegum's in a lot of ways and Star and finn are very quirky not to mention the main character anyway. Plus, is marco really gonna call ponyhead his "Friend" in any capacity? XD

He’s not. It’s just the song. It’s from AT, originally with Finn singing it to Marcy and bubblegum. That’s why Toms voice sounds higher when he sings, and star addresses Marco and Tom as girls.
