I graduated with my bachelor's in literature this May! (: I have to say I've read Beowulf probably a hundred times hehe! I took a course in Old English and we had to actually learn how to speak proper Old English (which is more like German) and we read part of Beowulf in it's original form which was interesting. I told myself everytime I read it that I didn't like it, but I found myself writing about it a lot! The women in the poem and the concept of a peace weaver are so interesting to me!

Hey just a little shout out of support for this channel, a lot of people out here were afraid of pursuing an English major because of all the stereotypes around it, and you let us know what it's like actually being an English major and in a way you're helping us make our dreams come true. I for instance didn't major in English but very much wanted to. Thanks for letting us non majors know what it's like to be an English major.

What’s a stereotype around it?
@elij26942 жыл бұрын
@@Tolstoy111 well I hope I don't offend people but you know how there's a stereotype around how English majors have difficulty finding jobs? Well I'm sure there's a lot of English majors out there my age who turned out just fine, but it was scary to make the decision when something around 200,000 dollars is rested upon that decision. So I really admire the people who decide to major in English despite what people say. I ended up majoring in communications by the way.

I'm loving your syllabi! You're going to enjoy Beloved, I hope. (BTW, it's Belov-ED as in "Dearly Beloved") and while I can't guarantee you'll love The Scarlet Letter, there was so much magic in the background of the book that I couldn't help but fall in be drawn into this adultery drama. Do keep us updated on your Renaissance seminar. I had a lot of fun reading Spencer's unfinished masterpiece. The copy of The Faerie Queene I read had all original spelling, which made it quite the challenge. I got nearly halfway through the book. I really should read it again (and finish it this time!), though I might consider reading it in tandem with modernized copy.

ENGLISH MAJORS: Do you find that buying books for your English and reading classes is cheaper than buying textbooks for other classes? I’m going to be enrolling as an English major soon, and would like to what I’m signing up for and how I should prepare financially. 🙂
@grace27244 жыл бұрын
Yes they absolutely are. My stats textbook was about $120 whereas my 3 books for English together were about $30 and I could have gotten it cheaper if I bought all of them used but I wanted 2 of them new. English is easy to buy books for bc you can go to a thrift store or secondhand book store and will likely find what you need there for super cheap. If you are on a budget i would recommend looking for used textbooks through Craigslist, your school bookstore or another online retailer. They'll still be somewhat expensive but I've seen my stats book selling for $50 so its worth a shot. Personally, I've found waiting for a syllabus is a good idea before buying books bc sometimes what you're told when you pick classes and what your professor wants varies. This definitely is a bit risky though since some professors want to start class ASAP and you risk not having a book but they're usually pretty lenient the first week.
@19blackstar4 жыл бұрын
I never brought any books for college after first year. I mostly borrowed
@demetra95544 жыл бұрын
In my experience the individual books are much cheaper but because you're buying more books it can end up costing about the same. I've paid ~120 for film and sociology textbooks, but I've also had $80 English course readers (in addition to two more novels for the course) or English classes that require about 8 books per semester, which can really add up. (Prices are in Canadian dollars though)
@savannahhartje44904 жыл бұрын
It depends. Sometimes a professor will assign an anthology of literature and those can be quite expensive if you buy them new!

I once saw a production of Euripides' "The Bakkhiai" (or "Bakkhae"). It was stunning and awesome to see a play that was written so long ago, and knowing that it was viewed by people from so long ago. I actually wrote the theater company to encourage them to do more of the same. I don't think they did; nevertheless, it was an amazing experience.

So I read Samuel Heaney's translation of Beowulf and hadn't realized you were talking about another translation. I was so confused when you mentioned the dragon scale bag and wondered if I was even paying attention reading the book before I realized you had another version.

Seamus, not Samuel.
@michaelsommers23564 жыл бұрын
@@evalondon6845 Personally, I think Heaney's translation, for all its merits, is too polished and modern. I like Burton Raffel's translation, which for the most part tries to reproduce the alliteration and meter of the original. However, I haven't looked at all the translations out there, and there may be better ones. In particular, I don't think I've seen Tolkien's translation. There is at least one edition, edited by Chickering, that has the original and the translation on facing pages.

What do you plan on applying for job-wise with a degree in English lit? Because I wanna study English lit so bad but I don’t know what to do even afterwards except become a teacher.
@emmiereads5 жыл бұрын
Okay yes so I had the exact same thoughts before going into the program (I was actually in Biology my first year but switched) and honestly you have nothing to worry about! Everyone I've talked to, be that profs, teaching assistants or even grad students have all dispelled the myth of "the useless degree" because SO many jobs require someone who can expertly communicate, jobs that wouldn't even normally be considered int he "arts and humanities" field and it's so rare today that people can actually use English to its highest degree of interpretation, investigation and communication so someone with a Lit/Writing degree is so useful. I've been looking a lot into publishing, editing, working for companies that require a writer in any capacity, becoming an author myself, going to grad school, etc. More than that though you have to do what you love! I was miserable studying the sciences because I was ignoring my passion - and if you really study what you love then you'll have no problem applying that knowledge somewhere else - I have been the happiest bean these past two years because I've been able to expand my world view on absolutely everything, delve deeply into what it means to be human and surround myself everyday with books and words - it's been so worth it so don't be scared and do what you love
