The two brothers (Arryk and Erryk) are twins. When Erryk says they were 8 and 10 when they joined the kings guard he means 8+10 = 18, so when they were both 18 years old. Also the guy at the beginning is Cregan Stark and he's talking about his ancestor who was ruling Winterfell and the North 129 years before this when Aegon the Conquerer came with his dragons and made them bend the knee.
