What Are Angels?

Surveys find that nearly 7 in 10 adults in the US believe in angels. But what are angels supposed to be? What is the difference between angels, demons, genies, and ghosts? Why do cherubs look like the Roman pagan god Cupid? John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will explore early Biblical understandings of angels, evolution and elaboration of the idea in extra-Biblical apocalypses like the Book of Enoch, and later theological formulations by Christian philosophers including Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite.

As someone in Canada I'm very split. I love John and his work but the fact his congregation is revisionist Mormons/Latter-day Saints makes me uneasy. I'll check out their presence in Monreal but my interactions with regular Mormons has been very sad with clear culty tones (got into a fascinsting discussion with a duo going around evangelizing and when the younger of the two seemed very intrigued by some of the ideas I brought up the older pulled him away as he had the saddest expression in his eyes which have haunted me for years

The Biblically accurate angels meme actually has to do with the frightening, very inhuman multi-winged and multi-headed angels described at points in the Bible. It contrasts them against the very sanitized angels of popular culture. It's not quite accurate, since there are also more human-esque angels in the Bible, as discussed in the lecture, but it's fun.

And the multi-heads represent something that seemingly all cultures understood in their cultural context. There are typically 4 heads and they represent the fixed signs of the zodiac. Not that Hebrews were astrological worshippers, but because astronomy was so important and known to all in ancient cultures. It showed YHWH’s control over the whole entire year. They can also look all 4 ways because YHWH has control over all 4 directions…the whole world.

I believe the modern conception of experience of angelic presence as much more informed by the Hellenistic concept of daemons as opposed to Jewish literary or other Mesopotamian concepts of a divine messenger. NT angelic "messengers" seem to be influenced by Apollo, the Hellenistic messenger God. While Jesus was a Jewish mystic, Christianity is the Greo-Romsn cult that defied Him. That is my understanding as a Christian myself. I think understanding this is crucial for 21rst century Christianity to flourish and overcome the anti-intellectual, reason challenged pop Christianism bs down here in America's Bible belt

Manifestations of the divine exist to encourage insight within the individual. It is part of the cosmic mystery, that greater meaning can be found when we share our mythologies. Each vision tells you how it can be addressed, a person can guess at identities where names are already prevalent and widespread. Job had to face God, as we all must look into our fears. Each person's beliefs, myths, thoughts and feelings are their truth, their reality. The chaos of our myths and beliefs coming together is what we call culture ɓut it shouldn't be confused with reality. That's a wider lens on the sharedness and chaotic creativity of people integrating.

Angels are real!! In 2002 I had a bunch of lumber fall off my truck on a busy over pass at Greenville Texas , traffic going 70. As I got out of my truck I said - Lord this is going to be dangerous . As I picked up the first 2x4 this Greenville police car pulled up behind me, lights flashing and a Sargent got out and started handing me 2x4s while traffic is whipping by . He never said anything but we shook hands and I looked at his name tag so I could call the police station & thank him . Got home in 15 minutes and called the police and told the dissipater my story . She said she had worked there 18 years and the was no one by the Name of Sgt. Braun there . I described the Sgt. carefully , she said that did not fit the description of any of their officers . You explain that to me .

Did you know in 1979-80 Angels appearing as hitch hikers were seen & picked up all over America . You mention the narrator of the Genesis account of Sodom and Gomorrah, identifies the two travelers who entered the inn, as "angels." It is only the narrator who has dawn this conclusion. as none of the characters or actors within the story seems to be aware of this fact. The travelers are not recognized as angels to those who see them, but only as men. Not holy or priestly men but apparently ordinary men. How is it that the narrator or writer is the only one that knows this secret while those within the story remain unaware? Excellent lecture and much appreciation for your time and research to present such valuable material.

I studied ancient Greek in the Classics Department at UGA as an 18 year old atheist. When I reconnected with Christ in my 30's and began to study the Greek NT it was like going from drinking barely potable water to the finest intoxicating beverage imaginable (25 year old Macallan if Scotch is your cup of tea for example). Always love the quality and academic depth of your presentations. When it becomes within my means, I look forward to supporting your channel beyond offering comments to let the good old algorithm know this is good content. It is always a blessing to be reminded that Christians aren't all judgemental idiots literally trying to force their perverted bibliolatry down everyone's throats. A 21rst century worldview that is "in Christ" cannot be about dividing God's children on the basis of sex, class or ethnicity. This channel might not be 'Christian " as defined by some media outlets, but I find it more representative of the Christ Jesus crucified that has guided my life than most of the content KZbin shows in my feed.

Bible is pretty good on human lifespan. French Woman Jeanne Louise Calment, is the oldest person in recorded modern history. Jeanne made it to 122 Years. Amazing.

Its very rare for people to live that long . The bible claims people lived to be 800 or more years old. Impossible, because bones ,wear out , organs fail , etc . People nowadays are being kept alive longer than they should because of modern medicine and technology, to keep their hearts going.

@@dbarker7794 We have no way to know if this happened or not because they didn't have Departments of Health Issuing Birth Certificates and the like. It's Apples to Oranges comparison relative to Record keeping and information management. Unfortunately the Library of Alexandria was burned down. We lost a great deal of information on how People back then did things so surviving information such as Bible is the best we have to deal with. We know some Romans made it to the 100 range even though they were guzzling down Lead Spiced Wine every Day which may explain some of their violent nature. Chinese Emperor Chin was talking Mercury to extend his Life. It's no Wonder why so many of our Ancestors were having Visions regularly as they poisened their Brains regularly.

I like reading parts of the bible, there's a lot of good stories and great action, I think everyone should read it, wether they believe in God or not. Its also full of life lessons which apply for those who do or don't believe. I don't believe Adam and eve appeared from nowhere Or that were all descended from them And I don't believe anyone lived for centuries , Theres a lot I don't believe in the bible, but it doesn't stop me from reading it, because there's a lot I actually agree with

All this talk about the OT and the holy of holies reminded me of the notion that YHWH might have been a Donkey headed God in ancient sources. Would love to hear John's thoughts on that idea maybe in a future lecture. Supposedly a donkey headed idol was carried out of the temple when it was looted and razed by the Romans and they paraded it around Jerusalem in their victory celebrations, then for the next few centuries there are references to the Jews being Ass worshippers.

The problem of evil just doesn’t have a good solution. They all just pass the buck. So god isn’t responsible for evil happening because that’s simply a lack of good. But why wouldn’t god just fill up everything with goodness, so there wouldn’t be a void for evil to fill? I don’t buy it. You can’t be omnipotent and allow evil to exist and still be wholly good. God is either not omnipotent or not wholly good.

There were several "giants" listed in the bible other than Goliath. There were his 4 brothers (Which is why david grabbed 5 smooth stones). There were the sons of Anak (Anakim=giants) Gideon, Giber (Giboreim=mighty giants) Nimrod/Orion (The Mighty hunter giant) Then there is the descendant of Baal, Abaddon, and Kish named Saul the first king of Israel. 2ho was head and shoulders above all those in the kingdom of Israel. (That doesnt make him a giant but it is in his DNA)

Might be related to the term for "grave. Image." There is an idea that calf cast from metal (e.g., golden calf) is prohibited, but a calf carved from wood, then gold- plated could be permitted.

Agreed, in Hebrew, angel is simply translated as messenger, mal'akh' (מַלְאָךְ).Then again, this video also brings up the idea of Theophany, or the idea that Jesus makes a physical appearance in the Old Testament (or Tānāḵ): 1) Jesus is one of the three visitors telling Abraham that Sarah will give birth to a son (Genesis 18), & 2) Jacob wrestles with an angel (Genesis 32:22-32).

A typical image a Christian thinks of, wings , hovering above our heads, Came from carvings, statues, or Roman coins, most of their Gods are depicted with wings . The halo, comes from paganism, Sol the sun God, or mithras, a similar pagan God of the sun. Christian angels, & early saints, basically replaced the pagan top God and the lesser Gods , Which the Romans basically copied but gave their own spin to the Greek gods, demigods etc .. Many Christian churches in ancient European countries are built on top of much older pagan temples. Verulamium in England has a 10th c Saxon church built on top of a first century Roman pagan temple. The opposite side of the Roman city has another 10th century Saxon church built on top of 1st century pagan memorials .. Almost like they're trying to erase the memory of anything pagan.

Post-modern culture probably doesn't "get" all these connections, but even so, we might be influenced by literary sources like Dante's Inferno & Paradiso & Milton's Paradise Lost & Paradise Regained. @@EvelynElaineSmith I havnt read any of those books Milton's paradise or the other, I read a little bit of Dante's inferno but it's not for me. Most of my reading is academic, archaeology. Or English history,, , bernard Cornwall is only fiction I read , because his books are well researched re history, the last kingdom series is great, and Agincourt, & harlequin are excellent books .

@@EvelynElaineSmith an MA and PhD , wow , impressive I graduated 30 years ago with a BSc in field archaeology I should have an MA by now but tbh I really hated college, The lectures were great but the essays the pages and pages , the stress and sleepless nights, I hated it. I understand people like yourself, the need for so much reading and writing. But when I started volunteering I realised I was learning more about field archaeology in a day that I was after months of reading and writing. I nearly gave up college a few times but I'm glad I saw it through and graduated.. I would understand the need for all the reading if I wanted to specialise in ceramics or human remains, etc . But field archaeology is something that one learns from practical experience. So I have a lot of respect for anyone with MA even more so with Phds . Its strange because its not that I hate reading or writing, I love both , English was one of my favourite classes at school, I loved creative writing , always have, I wrote the songs when I was in a rockabilly band, I love reading if its something I want to read, I've spent years ( all put together) mainly about the history of my city , archaeology is practical, we can't create stories . But its impossible to close ones mind to the gaps , or read something that history books claim, and not judge them, criticise the stories compared to the archaeological facts ive learned. StAlbans, known as verlamio as seen on late iron age coins or verulamium after the Roman's invaded. Stories that involve my city , that I know are hugely over exaggerated, or have no evidence to support them. Caesar supposedly defeated the catuvellauni tribe with 1200 men and wiped out the warriors destroyed their settlement and so on. Yet the evidence indicates the complete opposite. Or boudicca killing 50k when the Iceni came through verulamium with 100-200k rebels. Even though the region involved had nowhere near that amount of people all put together. Historians tell stories but don't explain where so many people came from. Before my interest in archaeology and college , I just assumed history books gave the history, the facts , it never occurred to me about the origins or facts , I just took for granted they were factual . Now I dont trust anything unless the archaeology supports the story . Its quite shocking how much written history has nothing to support it re archaeology. A few words attributed to Caesar and others like Cato , are accepted as facts , even though few are contemporary and a few things that do survive have been taken by Victorian historians and are now accepted as factual history. I know the population of the Iceni, the trinovantes of Essex, the size of London 18 years after the invasion 15 years ( less in some parts) after the south was subdued and Roman rule accepted . Utube has videos from the 70s where excavations in London show layers of burning which was attributed to boudicca, with recent technology test pits and results of soil samples from those 'boudiccan layers" we now know are much later ,early 3rd century, fire was a common thing in wooden buildings lite by open flames . I work alongside people who study all kinds things, to do with history, Myself its Roman, coins artifacts, others Saxon, or Tudor Experts in languages, medieval charters, Most I have no interest in, some, such as experts in languages, just by listening to them, I know its beyond me But I do know one thing, its something so complex, only a few have brains wired to understand it , like the guys who built & deciphered Enigma,or built early mechanical computers. There are some things that cant be taught unless they are born with brain that's wired to understand. Languages constantly changed, evolved,, words came and went , or meant something different to the original. Modern example, bad = good , sick = good . Slang , or shortened versions of the original, have been happening for millennia. ..So most people have to trust the translator , when reading something in English. Ancient Greek couldn't be translated into English 2000 or even 1000 years ago , because English was completely different. When were the translated version first done ? And what language was used ? When and who by ? Most things read today are not copies of contemporary originals. Greek, latin, 1100 ad differs from 100 bc . Many languages don't have words that can be translated. So who decides what words to use in place, how close are they , many words look the same but have different meanings in the way they are used . To, too , two, Who ,Hoo , , I'm sure there are better examples, those just came to me first. How accurate are these translations is my point ...

My own agenda is to always look for the Cataclysm and Lost Civilization hints in the religious texts and legends and myths. I find it interesting, that in some of the depictions of the named Angels and Lucifer they hold a lance at an angle. For me that angle always hints at the 23.5 degree tilt of the rotational axis of the Earth and where it points (- which plays a role in “The Great Year” / The precession of the Equinoxes / The Long Calendar; and maybe as a slightly adjacent hint it may point to issues with the axis in General, like in Earth Crust displacement theories, that have the Earth tilting over at the Cataclysm); also the lance might be doubling as a symbol for the impactor, as would the Flaming Sword (- Younger Dryas impact hypothesis). -The Cherubim as winged Bull and winged Lion hint at the Taurid and Leonid meteor streams.- Edit: The Cherubs guarding the Throne is the Constellation in which the Sun rises on the vernal equinox: Leo and Taurus. See “The precession of the Equinoxes”. The Seraphim as “the burning ones” again hint at a Bolide / fiery meteor, or even ejecta from the sun itself (micro nova as responsible for certain isotopes in layers on the Earth that are not that old, geologically speaking.) I’m still very much confused about the antediluvian part of the story. The Nephilim as “the fallen ones” and the “Giants” and “the great men of renown” could - if not taken literally - fit in with Graham Hancock’s bringers of civilization from the lost precursor civilization/ Atlantis, especially since they taught metallurgy and medicine (kind of mirrored in the depictions of Michael and Raphael). But taken literally (“fallen ones”= from above,) they might be better made fit with the whole UFOlogy / Ancient Aliens idea. The taking of the women doesn’t exactly sound like modern stories of kidnapping by Aliens, but the whole idea of Hybrids might be seen as Eugenics, maybe even partly successful (“Men of Renown”), but also as an unnatural transgression against God, as ultimately theirs was the civilization that went under in the flood. Whatever they were, they must have originated on this Earth: I don’t think that Aliens from Outer Space make sense: there can be no interstellar travel on the timescales of a single life, even if they were from a longer lived species. FTL travel is not a thing. As I consider myself an Atheist, I tend to share the regret which Graham Hancock expresses over humanity being a “species with amnesia”. If the cataclysm is cyclical, and we are coming close to the next one, I find it regrettable, if again it would hit us right when we are at the cusp of Artificial Intelligence and Gene Editing / Creation of new Life-Forms in the Lab and Space Travel (albeit within our own Solar System). On the other hand: If I were a Christian awaiting the End-Times, watching how humanity begins to transgress what up until now counted as Human, making our own God (AI), fiddling around with DNA, trying to again build our Tower of Babel and reach the Heavens, I would welcome the big reset button.
