I have both cataracts and macular degeneration (dry form), diagnosed in my late 40's to early 50's. I forget exactly. No surgery or treatment for either yet. At some point in my 30's I began to notice that my hit-you-in-the-face green eyes had developed some coppery brown spokes (some wide) and some coppery brown splotches (close to the pupil), more on the left side, the eye with the macular degeneration. They almost all disappeared around the time I was diagnosed with both of these conditions. My eyes are no longer as green too. I mentioned this to my eye doctor, and he must be misunderstanding me. He shined a light on his own eye and showed me how his own eyes are various colors. These colors were in rings, however, not spokes and splotches. He has brown eyes, but with the light on his eye, there was a thin blue circle around the outer colored portion, then brown, then a slightly thicker ring of gold around his pupil. This is not what I was seeing in the mirror with my own pupils. They weren't rings. They were wide coppery brown spokes and splotches scattered about. How do I explain this to him? He also doesn't believe me when I tell him that I can watch TV and read the clock on the wall from across the room while wearing my computer/reading bifocals. He says that's impossible, but I even drove home after picking up my glasses wearing my computer/reading bifocals because I too thought it was strange, as I am also severely myopic. There is something weird going on with my eyes. Also, why does macular degeneration spread? I also have gum disease and have read that oral microbes have been found in the macula of those with macular degeneration.

I have just went through having the cataract surgery. What I did not know is that when the lens is replaced in your eyes if you have bifocals this surgery takes away the bifocals. Not sure why. I had to get glasses with the upper part that is clear as you have your distance sight, but you will have to have bifocals put into your glasses. You can see distance after the surgery and wear a pair of magnified reading glasses that you can buy at a dollar store or drugstore that help with the close up vision you may need. It takes some time to adjust to that option as you will have to switch between the two pair of glasses. Just one more thing is that you usually will have your cataracts done one eye at a time. There is time between the procedure. Waiting for each eye to heal. Also there are post- op visits. The eye drops therapy that is required are explained in this video above.

What a great video! I know I have cataracts but I've never been told what type I have. I was planning on having them taken out but I fell and broke my patella in half, had a bad case of blepharitis that I simply couldn't shake for almost 6 months, covid happened. Then it was a massive infection that ate a hole in my maxilla, followed by surgery for an accident that shattered my wrist. Talk about roadblocks to success! Anyway I need to get it done before my birthday in 2022, because I will not be able to pass the eye exam as my vision has deteriorated that much. Frankly I'm a bit spooked because I'm not sure what will happen next to prevent me getting the surgery! 😆 But your videos have been a big help... thank you so much! 🌸

@@pedithnagali2612 thank you, Pedith! My update is that I wound up going for a cataract assessment, and general eye health exam at a place that specializes in cataract removal. One of the tests was a refractive exam ... You know, that test where they put this machine over your eyes and ask which lense looks better, one or two? Three or four? 😊 That's when I discovered that the majority of my vision loss was NOT from cataracts, but from a change in my prescription. One eye had actual gone up by 2.25 diopters! No wonder I couldn't see! I'd also developed quite a bit of astigmatism, which I never had before my dry eye/blepharitis ordeal. My thoughts are that the dry eye actually gave me astigmatism. And here my doctors, including the one that measured my eyes for cataract surgery, told me that my vision deterioration was all bc of my cataracts and not correctable with glasses Sure there are some small changes that glasses can't fix, bc I DO have cataracts, but the changes are so small, it's not worth it for me to risk the operation and expense, when I can see perfectly well with my new glasses. Plus I'm kinda creeped out that they lied to me about the real cause of my vision loss, that I had to discover on my own it was a prescription change and newly developed astigmatism that was the cause.

I get a lot of glare, lights from head lights at night, the hays over my eyes makes it hard to see to drive at dusk and dawn. I don't see deer on the side of the road. Hunting is almost impossible I found this year because deer disappear into the back ground I can't see them. So I felt it was time to get them checked and my eye doctor is sending me to a specialist.

I've had cataract surgery 20 days ago. Thank God only one eye! I seem to be the only person in the world who has had problems. Firstly excruciating pain, starting as soon as the local anaesthetic wore off. Pain like daggers stabbing into the eye. No one mentioned pain or pain relief. In desperation, after several hours of agony, I fumbled around on my phone, managed to get my GP who said it would be ok to take some painkillers. I did and the blessed relief. I have had only minor low key occasional fleeting pain since. The morning after surgery I was blind in the eye. A deep grey mist. I had to return to the hospital for the checkup that morning. Despite being blind I was told all was well! The next day I was still unable to see, a thick white mist was covering my vision. Someone took me back to the hospital and a very grumpy Dr. said it was perfectly ok. Well it's not perfectly ok. I can now see like through a blurred lens. It doesn't improve. I have followed all instructions, endless drops...I have been for another checkup, I have been through many eye examinations. Thank God, again, I have been told the macular ect are ok.....can I trust these people??? I still have much worse sight than before. They have ruined me. They say the sac clouded over immediately after surgery???? I don't believe something could happen that fast. At the moment I can see light. I'm afraid if they start messing about I will lose what little vision I have! Anyone got any advice???

I was already Myopic with Astigmatism and have remained as such so now wear Progressive Eyeglasses or Multifocal Toric Contacts. Interestingly i had two different types of Cataract(the first eye had a Nuclear cataract and the second a Cortical cataract). `I have already had YAG laser treatment following the first surgery.

I advised him that I never had distance problems before, and in fact I never wore reader's until about 6 years before. I am scared that I won't be able to see after surgery.

Thank you for an excellent explanation. I didn't know anything about different types of cataracts. I need the surgery in both eyes, 1 being worse than the other. That's all I was told. Having surgery on my eyes horrifies me & haven't scheduled it. I noticed that no longer could see to drive at night then apparently I don't see colors correctly. Am having much harder time indoors at night with lights on & reading is much more difficult. Even with new prescription my sight isn't corrected. Needing a magnifying glass with your glasses to read is very frustrating.

I just had my first eye done this week. It is FANTASTIC to see again. I could have waited three more years to be on medicare, but I didn't want to wait - I wanted to SEE. I'll have the second eye done 2 weeks later. I'll be posting videos of my experience on 2/18/2022. It is nothing to be scared about. Having one eye done at a time, I am able to compare "new eye" to "old eye" at this time. One eye's vision is super clear & sharp! No pain. After I got home from surgery and ate lunch, I should have taken a nap for a couple hours (the eye was dilated for a while), but I made a video about how I was doing (!), which is funny in retrospect. Later in the day I was doing really well - the dilation was down, I could see really well.

Very interesting video that explains it extremely well. I found out a few years ago I have small cataracts forming in the center of my lens in both eyes, and seems to be slowly worsening. I’m very young for this, but it doesn’t seem to be impacting my vision yet other than seeing some halos around light at times. Not sure how long until I’ll start really noticing the real negative effects, but I’m a big wimp when it comes to surgery of any kind & admittedly really nervous about needing a procedure to fix this one day. Thx for all the info, really appreciate it!

I've had both eyes done, it doesn't hurt a all, takes about 10 minutes for each eye, I even had the second one done without sedation so I could drive myself home. The anesthetic they put in your eye makes it totally numb, and they put a device to hold your lid open. It is not uncomfortable. You feel them moving your eye around with the tools, but it's not painful a all. As soon as they put the new lens in you can see immediately. Watching them break up the old lens is also interesting, pretty colors. Have it done, it's not a problem.

The holes are like two to three millimeters, and while those are in your eyes, you feel nothing but a little movement of instruments If you're still afraid they will give you sedation. That is an awful experience you had! I had my first eye done last week. Some of the drops they put in my eye were to numb it completely. I literally had no pain. An anesthesiologist was present and spoke to me during the prep phase. They only gave me a liquid concoction to calm me. Meanwhile, he told me if during the procedure I felt any pain at all to tell the surgeon right away and they would do whatever they could to ensure I had no pain at all. The fact that your surgeon put this pain issue on you is awful. He should be horrified that you had any pain during the procedure. This is on them, not on you. Don't let them gaslight you.

Dr. D, I am 26 years old and was told I have a small cataract on my right eye. The doctor said it could be genetics. I'm worried it may have been something that has happened to me in the past as I know trauma can cause them. I've had some corneal abrasions and have been bumped in the eye a few times. How hard would those bumps have to be to cause cataracts? Could you give me an example? Thank you.

I'm taking flomax for bph. I know that it can cause floppy iris when removing a cataract. (My cataracts are just starting to form.. Age 64) Would it be advantageous to get them removed earlier than normal because of the flomax? And should I wait longer between surgeries because of the possible complications or would those complications happen during or shortly after surgery? Thanks!

Thank you for sharing this information.. I'm 60 YO and started to get Cataract at the early stage, but gradually I can't see clearly with my glasses (+3.5-3.2). I can see better without glasses when walking.. I'm broke and I have multiple difficulties in my life due to unemployment and no pension or social security plan.. But last thing I like is to get blind during my last struggles.. Is there a recipe to hold it from further deterioration? I read about! LANOSTEROL EYE DROPS which prove to reverse Cataract? Is that useful in my case? %?

Nervous. The macula swells after cataract surgery? I've read that cataract surgery speeds up the progression of macular degeneration. My eye doctor says no. I don't believe him. All it takes is one leaky blood vessel, and I lose my central vision. I've had ultrasonic cleanings done on my teeth, and my gums bleed. I would rather lose my driving privileges at night, or both day and night, than to go completely with blind because of cataract surgery.

I’ve been told I have cataracts, if I wear sunglasses while driving the dash is to dark to read, I need a bright light to read at home and colors are hard. I keep hearing insurance doesn’t cover multi focus lenses. If I choose a multi focus do I pay the difference or is the entire surgery not covered?

I don't know If Im starting to have cataracts or not...I still have the same like "transparency" that passes through my vision when I move my eyes from side to side since 3 years ago. Went to my specialist a year ago and she saw nothing and told me it was maybe round floaters (I tend to have floaters) but now Im thinking I might have that "sheet" that passes when the eye is moving...I don't see it permanently just when I move the eyes from side to side...Im 50 and I just started to use prescription glasses for presbiscia a couple of years ago. In any case, thank you for your videos...you seem to be not only beautiful but also adorable.

I learned last week I have a “surprise” cataract. Guessing the subcapsular? I am in my thirties and found that I had a retinal disease and had to take steroid drops for a while. Now it is a super low dose but suddenly my vision went from warped to blurry, to next to nothing. In two weeks went from 20/60 and no cataract to over 20/200, in one eye. It is uncomfortable and sooooo disconcerting!

As cataracts develop they can shift your prescription. There is even something we call “second sight” where your prescription can improve as cataracts develop! But as they grow, they tend to slowly cloud or blur things until you get to the point you’re ready for surgery. So yes, as cataracts are developing it is normal to see prescription shift or even improve and to need new glasses u til they get to the point they’re actually ready to be removed!

A couple of months back I was slurping some noodles and the hot, oily broth splashed into my eye. The day after, I noticed my right eye was a little blurry, so I went to see an optometrist for an eye exam. Turns out I have a cataract in my right eye at 26 years old. Dr. D, is it more likely that the cause of the cataract stemmed from the broth or is it more likely that I already had a case forming, but the broth "accelerated" the growth??
@EyeSchoolwithDrD

No, the broth isn't forceful or traumatic enough to cause. It was there/forming/congenital.

Excellent video - I had a head injury close to a year ago running and slamming head on cement and immediately developed blurry vision - ER no internal bleeding - two months later opthamologist told me had concussion which Caused blurry vision one eye only- I went to a neurologist I went to another ophthalmologist who told me I had a huge cataract and had to have surgery ASAP. I told him I developed this problem after falling within two days and he told me that it was in my mind I must have had blurry vision before that which is untrue. My eye isn’t cloudy I have no glare at all it’s just blurry vision. I get a third opthamologist opinion before I proceed to have cataract surgery?
