I watched Demon Slayer because one of the managers at EB Games said they were watching it. And since I had nothing better to do in my spare time, I chose stream all 26 episodes on Netflix. And I'm so glad I did! cause I can't recall a modern day Anime I've enjoyed this much?! Sure, it only scratches the surface of the series right now. As in no character focus episodes yet(aside from flashbacks), But I really want this series to do well, and get more seasons and episodes. Cause I barely know anything about the main villain, or the high rank Demon Slayers and their leader, aside from names, faces and personality.

So a more accurate meaning for Oni would actually be “Cryptid”. A word Cryptozoologists use to describe animals and creatures that have not yet been identified and therefore have been colloquially referred to as “Monsters”.
@TheRezro5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that basically is the case. Term Yo-Kai is slightly broader describing "paranormal creatures" in general, but even if translation as Ogre isn't fully accurate, it is still way more accurate then "demon". What is totally inaccurate, as Oni by definition were living. After all for long time Japanese refereed that way to Westerners (famous Oni Isle and Oni Warships are in fact reference to Dejima, so famous Portuguese and later Dutch trade factory in Japan).
@ZombieBarioth5 жыл бұрын
Seems more like the Japanese equivalent of fae to me. People tend to think of fae folk as just stereotypical fairies, yet it encompasses a wide variety of supernatural creatures that resembles anything but, including goblins, gnomes, and the dullahan. The problem with comparing either to cryptids is that cryptozoology includes both mythical creatures as well as real known but presumably extinct species, which occasionally are proven to still exist. Its basically a "we can't prove it doesn't exist" catch all category. There isn't really a term Oni or yokai in western culture, it would be like wrapped angles, demons, deities, and every single mythical creature or monster into one single category, which we simply don't do.
@LordHayabusa855 жыл бұрын
ZombieBarioth I’ve thought about the Yokai parallel a lot. Similarly to Fae, there is one other comparatively similar creature that I know of. Demons but not in the modern sense. The Demons of today are actually called Shedim. The original Demons come from Ancient Greek Mythology, they were both the voices that whispered advice into your ears and the whims of fate, chance and nature. They were creatures attributed to both disasters and miracles and many other oddities of nature that couldn’t be explained. Daemonia is what the were called back then.
@TheRezro5 жыл бұрын
@@ZombieBarioth "Seems more like the Japanese equivalent of fae to me" Yo-Kai? Yes. Oni? No. "cryptozoology includes both mythical creatures as well as real known but presumably extinct species" No. Cryptozoology doesn't claim that unicorns exist. It claim that myth was based on versus animals, including Indian Rhinos, Orix, Mountain Ox, Giraffe and several others like extinct Elasmoterium (though most known variant known as Nicor/Nixie was purely mythological, until you claim that Hilary Clinton is one of them). Cryptozoology as para-science doesn't claim that mythological creatures exist, but try find real ones what inspired those myths. "There isn't really a term Oni or yokai in western culture" Disagree. "it would be like wrapped angles, demons, deities, and every single mythical creature or monster into one single category, which we simply don't do" But they are, just people commonly misunderstand those definition. Angel is a spirit what serve God (even if it has tentacles, what usually is the case) and demon is term used for any spirit of unknown aliment like for example pagan deity. But contrary to popular believes they always are either angels (like for example Satan) or devils (human spirits).
@TheRezro5 жыл бұрын
@@LordHayabusa85 You mean Daemons? In Greek tradition it simply meant spirit between humans and gods. It lead to modern definition as spirit of unknown alignment, as those "good" were angels (servants of God) and those "bad" were devils (fallen as much as humans). What later was generally equaled with devils (as why they hide identity if they are "good"). And by misinterpretation become separate naturally evil spirits (in opposition to fallen devils, even if in Christianity only what define spirit is its alignment, what usually is not what people think it is, anyway aka Satan isn't fallen). Shedim is from Islam if I'm not mistaken? And as such I can't say much about the idea. But what I can say is that Demons by definition are spirits, when Yo-Kai are not always that. It is why term "paranormal entity" fit better, as alongside spirits we have also possessed objects or even standard monsters.

I have to say, these videos about the many different kinds of Yokai is indeed amazing. In fact, I'd say that a lot of those Yokai give me a lot of inspiration for some personal projects I do as an artist on my DeviantArt page as well as giving me some interesting ideas for new projects. Aside from things like Elements of Nature, animals, and such, I also like mythical creatures and Yokai nowadays. In fact, I'd say that the Nekomata has to be my favorite of the bunch, but I'm also curious about it as well as another version known as the Bakeneko. I already have a basic idea of what they are - they are basically demon cats, one with two tails (or a split at the end) and the other just one - but I'm still curious to know a little bit more about them, maybe even from you if possible. I mean you can find some creatures based on them in things like Pokemon, Yokai Watch, Naruto and I believe more. In anycase, keep up with you amazing work. ^_^

I think what makes Demon Slayer, and a lot of modern medias, is that they’re inspired by things, not just using the yokai straight up. It’s like a blender of culture, mythology, tropes, and other ideas. They’re not one vein, which is nice, cause it allows for flexibility, without it seeming like a character with just a tagline of a yokai, or cheapening the yokai’s visage.

Love the videos. I also want to add a fun little tidbit about the ashura or asura as they're known India. Mostly they're possible historic origins. Now before I begin, I want to make clear that I have no refutable evidence to back this up save for extremely circumstantial. So take this with a grain of salt... or maybe a pillar of Lot's wife. The asura may have been a bronze age era hindu memory of the ancient Assyrians. A kingdom and people known for their brutality and warlike nature. Their kings led annual campaigns against anyone who so much as hinted at rebelling. And they didn't just go to war to maintain the status qua, oh no. Foe the ancient Assyrians, war was sacrament and a way to worship their gods. It was only when they attacked Babylon that their neighbors rose up in mass and annihilated them. So an ancient people known for their brutality and love for war who were done in because of their violent nature. Sounds pretty similar the asura, huh? Again, I have no evidence to back this up and any argument against it is valid. Just a little fun food for thought.

One character in Demon Slayer has me intrigued. Namely Shinobu Kochou. Seems to me that Japan has a fascination with butterflies and moths (if the likes of Mothra from the Godzilla franchise and Maimai'Onba from the 2007 "Dororo" is proof of anything). Any explanation why this is? Just curious.
