Just had two molars in my lower jaw yanked out and I’m paranoid as hell myself too. My blood pressure is high. When I was going through bouts of pain before the extraction I actually had my first anxiety attack ever. I swear to god I was dying. I don’t handle pain very well anymore. It looks to me like the clot is gone. No pain yet. It’s been two days now. Oh lord I hope I didn’t lose the clot all the way down to the root. I’m hungry as hell and I want to eat some substantiative food so freaking bad.

I wish my dentist was half as attentive as you are. I had 4 teeth removed last week and he didn’t even explain anything about dry socket, just waited for my mouth to be stuffed with gauze to ask me questions. I only found out about dry socket the day after via my mother. Now I am terrified, have only eaten soup once a day the past 3 days for fear any swallowing action might dislodge the clot. There is a greyish off white colour covering the holes in my lower teeth, slightly hollow but not deep..I have been in bed terrified to move or do anything and was incredibly worried as I had seen a site claim gray colouration is a sign of dry socket, thank god I found your video which had well informed me and eased my stress a little. The worst thing to do is use the internet to self diagnose but I had never heard of dry socket before my extraction and I feel my dentist was incredibly negligent in offering proper post dental care precautions aside from a little bag telling me to eat soft foods, no straws and to avoid smoking or alcohol which was easy for me as I don’t smoke or drink alcohol. It is just incredibly disappointing that I’ve had to look to a KZbin video for support and understanding. Thank you ever so kindly Dr Shessel for an informative video on this matter. I am hoping I do not have dry socket, I am on day 3 since the surgery, no terrible pain but I’m being told I will not know till day 4,5 or 7.

There are so many different scenarios. My pain started to increase on the 2nd or 3rd day after my lower wisdom tooth extraction. I played shinny hockey the next day after the extraction (dentist said it was ok if I played). It is now 1 week after the extraction; The pain (6.5 out 10) comes and goes. Tylenol 3 seems to get me through it. I just now (1 week after extraction) decided to pack the site with gauze and bite down. It hurt more for a few minutes then subsided a bit. It doesn't seem to make the pain worse when I draw air into my mouth with a deep breath (without gauze present); that is a good sign. The dentist had to cut a bit of the bone during the extraction, so I guess I should expect a fair bit of pain for awhile still. I am going back to the dentist for another filling in 4 days, so if I can tough it out until then, he can have a look at it then. The initial swelling of my cheek has gone down substantially; that is a good sign. I probably started eating solid foods too soon and too vigorously after a couple of days from the extraction. Doing it over again I would probably be more careful about hard food straying over to the site and occasionally cramming down on it (ouch). I'm kinda dumb like that sometimes... 'big dumb nut'. I feel like it could be all ok though. I need to have more patience for another week or two I guess... and keep food from jamming into the site. Keep rinsing with warm salt water. If it turns out that I do indeed have a dry socket I will do a follow up in comments here.

Currently dealing with dry socket for the first time. Started day 4 post extraction on upper back molar presumably due to being on birth control since I followed all the instructions 100% or the fact it was a moderately traumatic extraction (one of the roots was extremely hard to pull). I’m on day 10 post extraction. Had my dentist clean and pack the site 3 days ago and that helped until it dissolved today. I also have a perforated sinus that I believe is draining into the site. Scared it will never heal while my sinus is messed up, but they want to wait for the socket to heal before deciding on surgery for the sinus. Horrible pain, zero pain meds (yay post opioid pandemic America). Worst experience of my life. Your video at least gives me hope that this will eventually heal.

Hey. I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. Dry socket definitely is less common in the upper jaw, but can still happen. It usually resolves spontaneously by about 10 days, so you should be getting better each day. If the sinus is involved, that complicates things. Please follow-up with your surgeon. Good luck! When I tell you do not smoke cigarettes or weed after having a tooth extracted, you best take heed and listen. I was one of those that didn't listen and the blood clot did not heal. The dry socket was more painful than the abscess that I had before the extraction. It was even more painful than when I had fractured my tailbone. I remember going to the emergency room because the oral surgeon was closed. They ended up having to get me four local anesthetics in the jaw just to dull the pain. Then they had to give me a shot of Valium and Versed so I could fall asleep until the office opened up in the morning. Trust me do not smoke and do not use a straw. At that time, I was also addicted to opiates and benzos and it took both Valium and Versed.

I can’t figure out if it’s that or if I’m just sore. It’s been 5 days since they pulled them, my pain is slightly getting better but when I eat it goes back to the normal throb or pain I’ve had since day 2-3. I don’t see a clot but the bone is grayish/yellow. Just a warning this is extremely painful. I was stupid when I had my wisdom teeth out last year, and I didn't listen to the doctor. I went for a vigorous walk the next day and ate what I wanted because they didn't hurt bad. I didn't have sedation so I was wide awake and bored, but anyway listen to what they tell you about not doing anything to strenuous the first few days and eating soft food. The pain was agonizing, even with packing in, and it lasted for a solid six days before it finally started to taper down to a more tolerant level. Another tip is, is that I was 41 at the time and the procedure was tolerable with Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and local anesthetic. I had two of them removed and both were partially impacted. I saved myself like 600.00 not having sedation, and it was fine, and would have been an unnecessary risk. Everyones tolerance and anxiety is different, but I highly recommend the nitrous instead of the sedation, but obviously discuss what is best for your situation with the oral surgeon.

I just had my wisdom teeth taken out today and the laughing gas isn't really needed since they give you this gel stuff that makes you feel less pain when you get the shots in your mouth. @@kyler124 I had a VERY BAD experience with an AWEFUL oral surgeon when I broke my jaw a few years ago. He failed to tell me how many injections of lidocaine (or whatever it is they use) I would need in both the upper and lower jaw to take the wiring off (it is SEVERAL if you are wondering, like a ton more then you would ever need for any typical dental procedure), and I should have been told to get conscious sedation for it, but he did not fully inform me. He hit a nerve while injecting and the pain was excruciating and despite me crying and begging him to stop the injection he continued for another 2 minutes or more, it felt like ten.! Long story short I am now traumatized, and haver very severe anxiety with any thought of getting the numbing shot before dental procedures, thus the laughing gas was more to quiet my emotions and severe anxiety over that, then the actual pain of the teeth removal.

I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. Was this an oral surgeon that extracted your teeth? It sounds like a classic dry socket, and a pretty severe one. Ibuprofen 800mg every 6 hours as needed (if you can take Ibuprofen) is the first line of treatment. If that doesn't relieve the pain, the doctor needs to place a medicated dry socket packing into the wound. I would call and inquire about that. I hope you feel better. Dr. Aiken

However the one on the top was still bleeding yesterday and two clots about the size of a dime fell out two different times. I put a gauze on it last night and since then haven’t had any bleeding. I’m unsure but i think that last one continuously bled longer because i didn’t place it correctly. Do you think i’m out of the woods in terms of getting a dry socket for the other three or no? It’s day four today, also I’ve experienced barely any pain and only had to take pain meds once, just some swelling and tolerable soreness on both sides of my jaw

So it’s been about 5-6 days since I had 3 front teeth removed because of a sports accident. My dentist did some bone grafting and then sent me on my way. I’ve done the warm salt water rinses, soft foods, and put gaws in when smoking and barely pulled off the joint as to not dislodge the clot, all seemed to be working. Then last night I was flossing but wasn’t looking at the mirror and I accidentally hit one of my gums where the tooth was removed and it looks like either the clot is hanging off or it was a piece of food or something that was stuck. Now there is some exposed white stuff and it appears the clot is hanging off to the side. Is this a cause for concern ? Will this develop in to a dry socket? I would really appreciate a response

Honestly, just follow the directions for cleaning and "hope for the best". You can do everything right and still get a dry socket. On the other hand, you can do everything wrong and not get one. It's a bit of a crap shoot, if you know what I mean. Eat whatever is comfortable. Good luck. Dr. Aiken

Day 5 and woke up after extraction saw a hole in there. Yesterday was at pain level 3 . Took Advil brought it down. This morning almost no pain. Because I see a hole think I might have a dry socket. Hate the hole looking thing. Yesterday also had a sore neck and some pain in my ear.

Hey. A hole doesn't equal a dry socket. Just keep it clean with rinsing and using a syringe (if you got one), and you should be good to go.

Hey. I'm sorry you aren't doing well, but this isn't a dry socket. Smoking never helps wound healing, so I would stop that. It's hard to say what's going on, bit it's not normal this far out front the procedure. I would follow up with your surgeon. Does that make sense? Good luck. Dr. Aiken

Hello i need some advice if i should see my dentist. So it’s been one month since i had surgery when i had my wisdom tooth extraction but now i can see a small thing poking my tongue where my wisdom tooth was extracted don’t know if it’s a bone or a tooth growing (don’t know if that can happen) should i be concerned?

Hey. It's probably a piece of bone. You can see if you can pick it out, or go see your oral surgeon. Good luck!

I had one of my lower wisdom teeth extracted yesterday. When I got home I rinsed my mouth out with water and also spat blood out not knowing that I was not supposed to. I then read on the internet all about dry sockets and that to avoid these you should not do certain things like rinsing and spitting. I am therefore worried I have a dry socket. I have looked into my mouth using a light and a mirror but am unsure whether the socket is dry or not. I have no pain at all and my breath does not smell. What would you advise?

Good morning. You don't have a dry socket right now. :-) If one develops, it will usually cause symptoms 3-5 after the procedure. At this point, you should rinse your mouth with salt water after each meal to keep the wounds clean. Don't smoke and take it day to day. If you develop a dry socket, it will eventually heal on it's own. You would just need to manage the symptoms with Ibuprofen or a dry socket packing, but you should discuss with your surgeon. Good luck! Team OSSA

Hello. A dry socket usually shows up 3-5 days after an extraction and lasts another 4-5 days, so by around day 10 it should be nearly resolved. You need to irrigate the holes until no more food collects in them. Good luck!! Dr. Aiken

I smoked weed the day before extracting 4 teeth, and also drank some beers before the surgery. They were removed today. Pain killers are doing their job. Blood still dribbling about my mouth. Fingers crossed 🤞

@@andrewaiken413 yea, you don’t say. Just a quick update for documentation Purposes. I have vomited 3x due to swallowing too much blood. In order to stop the vomiting, I’m now drinking Coca Cola and using cotton buds to try and absorb some of the blood. I think it’s safe to say I’ve lost the blood clots, now I’m just waiting for the pain. I’m also mal nourished as stomach as not been able to hold down smoothies, water or electrolytes.

@@andrewaiken413 thanks doctor. I have vomited for a 4th time on my 3rd day post extraction. It seems I can’t keep anything down. At the end of the puking episode their was visible blood. I think the vomiting is caused either by the blood or the antibiotics which I took after having a smoothie: there is also a lot of pain in my lower jaw after puking which makes me think about losing the clot. The pain is slowly subsiding as I write this comment.

@@aarontaylor1040 Well, if you are taking narcotics for pain control, I would stop that. If not, you may want to discuss stopping the antibiotic with your doctor. Personally, I don't prescribe antibiotics after wisdom tooth removal unless there is an infection. Have a good day.
