Gravity is grossly incompetent. Its the story of their company. They struck gold and instead of doing everything to make it bigger and better they started to look for ways to exploit the playerbase.

The foundation of the game is good. The people who made it, the very beginning, they did an excellent job. But, as time went by, things got worse and worse. The 4th classes are an insult to the spirit of the game!
@martinharyanto4465 Жыл бұрын
Well as much as them being incompetent, honestly they still exist and improve their game. The fact and the survival of the company shown, that whatever they are doing is "correct". As the time wen by, I would say the purpose/spirit was shifting, they are fighting against another MMORPG in the era, Ran (newest free mmorpg at the time), RF, Seal, Rose, Domo, etc. They show the world that, they survive. I agree with GameCitizien that the 4th classes are an insult to the spirit of the game. Honestly, they should've made Ragnarok 2 as a Ragnarok game but with better graphic and broader system. I understand that they don't want to kill Ragnarok like RAN did (we wont see it anywhere anymore). But Ragnarok 2 is also an insult as the game itself. Even though I hated Gravity for every little thing, but honestly they are the best out there for MMORPG. They are like Apple, Android, Toyota, etc, as a leading mmorpg company.

@@martinharyanto4465 Well, I don't think Gravity is currently the best when it comes to managing MMORPGs. It is true that we live in dire times for the genre, and it is hard to find better managers. But I think more modern game have better managing. On top of my head, I can think of Albion being managed in a way that I consider as far better. I think the problem with Gravity is not so much about what they did, but their lack of disposition to make proper changes. I think they are way too concerned with how well the company goes in each quarter of year, focusing on the stock market. Also, it is super clear they focus on mobile games. I don't think the mobile games will keep existing for too long. I think the basis of Ragnarok are super solid. You mentioned RF. RF had severe problems regarding dupping items and other hacking issues. The game had thousands of different weapons for early lvls (30-), and then just a couple of the same designs every 5 lvls after that. I loved RF, and RF also has a special place in my heart, but RF didn't have very solid foundations. My own take is that Ragnarok is alive *in spite of* modern Gravity management.

I'm amazed this game still exists. I was a GM for this game at their office in Marina Del Rey back in 2002, and it was a tiny company, small player base, and never seemed to go anywhere. After the sourcecode got out, and there was lots of other free servers around, I thought this game would be long dead, yet here it still stands. Weird. The only MMORPG I've been playing long term is the Guildwars franchise. The only thing I think iRO had going for it was that cutesy anime look, but, I never was very interested it in other than that. I even work for Playstation now a days, access to all the games, and very few interest me any more.

Nice! You are at the heart of the very beginning of the game! Ragnarok was part of the Golden Age of MMORPGs. I don't think games got less intereting. AAA games, yes - most of them as less interesting nowadays, with a few exceptions. But, looking at indie games, there are many original games.

@gamecitizen2 жыл бұрын
It's strange why they didn't add variations of Doram. I mean, it isn't really a different race, it's a class of its own. Grantly, there are three possible builds, but why didn't they add the possibility of having a Doram thief? Anyway, our hopes are in vain, since Gravity is busy with the 4th classes and they didn't say anything about new first classes... @gamecitizen Жыл бұрын
Well, consider the 2-2. They expanded the game horizontally. The 4th classes are mostly based on doing higher damage, even for classes like rogue, that always had more "alternative" skills. The game has changed. With the end of the Holy Trinity, the rise of solo-play and overpowered cash shop items, it makes sense for the 4th classes to be focused on doing more damage. It is a vertical progress in the game. Instead of 4th classes, I would much rather have a new ramification of classes, the 2-3, or alternative 3rd classes! But I dream...

i have always had this odd feeling that it wasn't the playerbase who did the hacking attacks on gravity, i mean i can believe them hacking the developer servers to get a copy of the source code of the game and perhaps even the concept arts, ideas & plans, whitebox designs, gameplay features, etc. but i cant imagine them intentionally sabotaging gravity to the point of destroying everything they worked on out of spite, only for samsung to swoop in? i don't buy that. what i think happened is that samsung themselves masqueraded as one of the hacking groups that attacked gravity, corporately sabotaged them to a crippling level, then waited for them to go bankrupt before buying them outright for peanuts. my theory for this is based on the fact that shortly after the forced acquisition the CEO and founder of gravity as well as a lot of the senior staff and developers were booted out and replaced with samsung's corporation goons. in a real-world scenario this would have never taken place since back then senior game developers were very rare and hard to find, especially online game developers, dont forget that this was in 2002 - 2003 when there were literally only a handful of mmorpg's anywhere in the world. there's no way in hell that the CEO would have allowed this to happen in the first place otherwise, gravity was his baby and ragnarok was his most ambitious work. i'm almost certain that there was some kind of foul play involved. note that later in the future samsung through gravity would endlessly accuse the private servers of destroying ragnarok online long before any of the private servers even had the staying power to compete with the official servers directly, at ragnarok onlines peak it had hundreds of thousands of players across the world while the private servers had at best a few hundred with the best private servers having a few thousand players. its obvious that they were shifting the blame away from themselves, but what isn't obvious is that samsung likely orchestrated it to use the community as a scapegoat to allay any suspicions away from themselves. it wasn't until the shuttering of official ragnarok servers across the world that the private servers started to grow in size, and only because the playerbase had nowhere else to go, the renewal update destroyed the foundations of the game and began the beginning of the end for gravity as the slow exodus started; and then the development of ragnarok 2 spelled the end for the franchise since it signaled to the community that development and support for ragnarok 1 was ending. with the closures of servers around the world every few months, the future looked bleak. the most hardcore communities tried their best to keep the strongest ragnarok servers alive with Ragnarok Singapore, Ragnarok Malaysia, and Ragnarok Philippines being some of the last servers to shutter in 2021 despite still having strong communities due to gravity (samsung) blindsiding their publishers on the contract renewals. in the end the private servers didn't do anywhere nearly as much damage as gravity itself did, and i believe that samsung is the culprit behind it all. of course for any of this to be proven someone would have to sue samsung for corporate sabotage, but there really is nobody left who can, since gravity today isn't even a shadow of its former self, its a thin veil in the aether of its former self. i have a very strong belief that the community would have never done such a horrible thing to the OG gravity since we love this game so much that we still think about it fondly after more than 20 years since its original debut.

I have a question: i'm from Italy, and I would like to play this game again. Should i join the official european one or should i try a unofficial server? what is the difference between these two in terms of: playability, updates with events etc.?
@gamecitizen2 жыл бұрын
All right, so... Each server is different. Regarding updates, usually private servers are the most updated servers, because they bypass the bureaucracy. The reason why official servers outside Korea take so long to get updates is, mainly, due to internal company bureaucracy. I live in England, but since I'm from Brazil, I prefer to play on the official Brazilian server (it feels more nostalgic to me). I don't recommend playing the official European server. Europe had an official server, it closed a few years ago, and with it, all the old characters. The new European server is a completely fresh new server. The population is very low. If they have closed the server once, what guarantees they won't close it again? Regarding stability, regarding the prospects of the life of the server, I think the official European is on equal status to private ones. The interesting thing about the private ones is the variety, specially of the old school Ragnarok, the one you and I played more than 15 years ago. Ragnarok has changed a lot, so if you want to have a taste of the vanilla ragnarok, private servers will cater you better. Regarding updated private servers, there are many, NovaRO being the strongest, but be careful - rumor says the server is about to close due to Gravity's recent hunt against private servers. My tip: try iRO - but you will need VPN. You can any VPN for free for one month, it can be NordVPN or ExpressVPN. Try and see if you like it. Try the European as well. Just download, create a char, and play it for a weekend. Check their forums and discords to see how active they are. If you are okay using VPN, I would go for iRO. If you want to taste oldschool ragnarok, I would try a private one.

Exactly. People say that the recent classic server in iRO shows that classic servers aren't good anymore. Not true. As you said, there are so many classic private servers out there. What ruined the iro classic were the bots. But nowadays there are tools to avoid bots, like the EAC. Also, by having a permanent classic server that is free to access and just cosmetic cash shop, Gravity would not spend too much money, since they would not need to develop new things, and they would be supporting their right to the intellectual property. But, go figure Gravity and Warpportal... They prefer to release new mobile games... They just released one today, btw.

But, nowadays, it's all about the next overpowered cash shop item. Interestingly, I started from zero recently in iRO. I have lots of good equipment in bRO (official Brazilian server), but I enjoy so much that early stage in Ragnarok. The problem is that I know that once I reach the max level, as you said, the game fades away. Then I spend a couple of months without playing the game, return for the nostalgia again, and so the cycle begins again! xD

I just want to share a comment that I did in other channel, kinda not related but I hope you like this story... Geezzz... Me as as 33 saw this RO content in 2023?! Wow... Want some story? I'm from Phillipines! It was Published by LEVEL UP GAMES with active game and live events from the very beginning. I played this game from 2003-2008 and 2010-2013. This game defined my teenage years (mid high school to college) as a gamer, it made me totally quit console games and go full PC until (which is casual since I'm a father of 2 now). I meet 3 girlfriends (even my 1st, shout-out Paula circa 2004 at French Baker, SM Fairview, hahah!) in this game but didn't lasts long since they are rich chicks, I'm a commoner (and young dumb teen, not in my prime), but those failed puppy love or failed relationship, it builds character. This game is fine from 2003-2007 even in a form of Monthly Subscription (a good one compare to now) since you can hunt Gears without spending real world money (except for buying RMT or PHP as we call it back then), and don't have Item Mall and Microtrasaction, even plague with bots, all towns and dungeons are alive and pack with humans players in party which make grinding more fun! Prontera the Main City as a Hub for Marketplace is packed and filled with responsive buying and selling. Players were reduced back then when Renewal was introduced (as stated in your video) since you have to achieve Max Level TWICE! (99 from OG JOB and 99 in Renew), new comer must double the effort needed to keep up with older one. It was slowly dying when Free to Play Server was introduced in 2007 with Microtrasaction of Consumable Items that Heals, Buffs and Boost Stats (great for rich players) meaning you can go solo specially when given to OP Renew Jobs like Biochemist that Spams Damage and Champion having 1 Huge Blow Damage, these guys and those items killed the joy of Party Leveling, people go solo... Like BOTS... But PVP is Fun but bit unfair. And when 2010 came, (I quit for a while to play Rohan Online 2008-2010), but when 3rd Job was released but oh, boy... Monthly Subscription Server and Free to Play Servers are now ALL-IN for Item Mall ONLY Gears and Cards (OP ones), Premium Subscription is added in F2P Server with Advantages and Finally the thing that REALLY KILLED the game here in Philippines in early 2010s? CNR or Cash N Receive! You'll have to pay (forgot how it is) Real Money Online to get OP Items and Gears giving edge to deep pocket players... AND THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN! Seven Eleven Promo Codes when Buying Slurpee or CD Album with RO related song, these code contains ANOTHER OP Gears and 200M Zeny (Game Currency) that BROKE the Game by Overpowering Heavy Spenders (guilty here) and BROKE Economy (a 10M Gear became 100M overnight) creating Hyper Inflation that really upsets A LOT OF GAMER! And that's it, months after that Real Life Rich Gamers become Gods in the Game and when I couldn't keep up... I said goodbye to the game... Years later after I got married in 2013, I've heard all Philippine Servers are shutting down... Sad, but life must move on, we get old and that's the REAL REASON why Ragnarok Online Died. Gamers... Go.. Old... And... Boring... Life became suck... Sorry for bad/sad ending... Wrote this one in almost and hour, made my youngest asleep. aesthetics wise, if they do a TOS visual style to the classic old RO game, where the map is immersive and big. where every monster we met is iconic and rememberable. that would be great. game design wise, come on~ its a 20+ years old game, it needs a lot of revamps of mechanics and monetization design. change the control design, change the core mechanics, etc. i hope they return to their roots, which is THE "anime" version of Lineage2.

"free". 2. visual cash shop is a good way to generate cash aswell, cause i would pay to look good tho. 😆 any costume that tied to the class fantasy should be awesome, like for example, swordsman basic model is from prontera. then they can generate version 2 and 3 (not just color change, but change in design as well, pattern, materials, etc. but still remaining the class iconic piece. example, swordie with their tippet on their shoulder with a swordie emblem pattern) then they even can fantasize what if there is a payon theme swordie costume, alberta, geffen, and so on. this will be a great design exercise for the dev and a good exploration for us players. 3. VIP plans would be great as well, but.....not too over the top tho. probably VIP is just for the"serious" hard core players to min max loot potential %.

So you suggest they change everything but the story/IP? That's not evolving ragnarok. That's slapping ragnaroks face onto a different robot. Let's not forget they did alot that already with RO2. And that was a dumpster

do they still have a global server? if yes, link please.
@gamecitizen3 ай бұрын
Well, technically speaking, iRO is the international server. It literraly means "international Ragnarok Online". However, in practice, it is not international. Many regions are ip blocked. So, if you want to play on an official server, it depends on where you live. But you can use VPN, it works too.

There are a finite timing and content for the game. They can't just keep scaling it as far as they want, because then the game will have to help the new players to catch up with older player, and with this idea all new player will not experience what older player experienced when they start the game. They won't feel the "party" and "waiting" (but then this is what the nowadays popular game rely on) Even though I hated Gravity for every little thing, but honestly they are the best out there for MMORPG. They are like Apple, Android, Toyota, etc, as a leading mmorpg company.

I'm not sure if it would, but even if it would, Gravity has no interest at all in doing that. Most of their money comes from mobile games, and that is clearly the route they will keep persuing. As a comparison, there is Albion, which is also "top-down", but they have poor graphics, which allows them to run the game on mobiles. Genshin Impact is an exception!

Bots have ruined the brazilian server still for a long time, they ran rampant for a decade and here we had next to no punishment for them; whats even worse, there are several accusations of corruption and association between GMs and botters/RMT players what makes matters even worse (i.e. a duping bug happened a while ago and the GMs did nothing; instead of doing a rollback on the server they just pretend nothing happened and said they punished a couple people)
