Hello everyone in this video I explain and demonstrate how passive radiator technology works most bluetooth speakers nowadays use this technology to increase bass response and sound quality I hope you enjoy.
Please use the poll in this video to choose what speaker you'd like me to review next.

It's nice demo but I have to say I don't agree. Taking the speaker out allows for sound waves coming from the back of the speaker to cancel out the sound waves coming from the front of the speaker. That's probably why they sound so bad when out. To properly demonstrate the effects of the passive radiators, you should find a way to prevent them from moving but keep the whole thing sealed.
@aspieblokesworld1890

Thanks for your comment. the only way i'd be able to stop the radiators moving would be to hold them which could result in damage hence why I removed the driver.
@maltepettersson3083

huh? if you hold the radiators stil, nothing can break! but if you hold on the active speaker then you can damage the driver
@ryanveigas6931
@ryanveigas6931 4 жыл бұрын
@@maltepettersson3083 If you hold the radiators still, the material to hold it in place is being forced to not move to and fro (This material can actually tear if you force it to not move while active)- thereby damaging the radiator. By holding the speaker out of its enclosure, the cables/wiring are still in place - hence those won't be damaged. Unless you yank the drivers out with force.
@5naxalotl
@5naxalotl 4 жыл бұрын
won't damage a passive radiator to hold it. they're passive ... they flap around according to external forces. if you hold the centre still the stresses are the reverse of a centre-driven speaker cone. if you wanted to be cautious you'd spread the load over the cone and make the net load zero everywhere. cuicui is 100% correct: removing a driver messes with the bass for much more important reasons than inactivating the radiators aspiebloke, if you want to hear the difference between a plain sealed box and a box with radiators, just place your fingers on the radiators, or cover them over with rigid caps, and they effectively become walls. you should also note that radiators perform an additional function of increasing the power handling of your tiny active drivers by controlling excursion. as the frequency gets too low for your drivers to make useful sound, the radiators start to operate in antiphase, counterintuitively going in when the drivers go in. sort of like playing paddle-ball. this not only makes sound, it effectively reduces the air volume behind the driver and limits its travel. iow the driver is better coupled to the air near its resonant frequency. also iow, the driver is seeing a higher acoustic impedance at low frequencies, roughly equivalent to being in the right gear

It isn't air pressure that drives the passive radiators it's the Helmholtz resonance of the tuned system. The passive radiators only vibrate in response to this. Above the resonance they do nothing. Below resonance they respond to air pressure changes but their output is out of phase with the main drivers and so therefore don't produce any useful output.

Nice demonstration. I have a JBL charge 2+ and it seems the bass produced from the left side of the speaker is stronger than the bass from the right side. I can actually feel the difference while moving in front of the speaker. How to check if both the passive radiators are working fine and there is no fault with the speaker itself.
@aspieblokesworld1890

I don’t have the charge 2+ myself bud I’d assume that like the other JBL speakers each driver and rad doesn’t have a separate enclosure. Therefore the bass should be even maybe check your left and right balance settings on the device connected to it. Also check for a air leak by gently pressing one rad in does the one on the other end come out? If not then that may be your problem. Let me know how you get on :)

IMO the tweeters tend to be more adversely affected from being covered than the pass radiators. I've got a fugoo XL (which I love) in the Style jacket; to me the highs don't sound quite as crisp when it's inside the jacket as it does when it's out. The bass doesn't seem to be muffled at all; I think the lower frequencies have an easier time passing through the fabric weave.

What I don't understand is how it generates the bass from the air pressure? The sound waves come's from smaller speakers and air pressure too but I thought it would have made the same noise but only bass it produces. Why?
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 7 жыл бұрын
Roderick Caesar Hi the device works by using the air pressure to move the two passive radiators so you've effectively got four speakers instead of two. The reason the passive radiators don't make the same sound is because they are just plates of metal there is no magnet or voice coil on them and they only extend the bass response of the speaker. I could send you a picture of the inside of the device if you'd like I hope this clears that up for you :)

@@aspieblokesworld1890 That is not true. Keep in the movement of the radiators is inverted (out of phase with the main drivers). They actually cancel the active drivers out. But in the low frequencies, due to the high moving mass, they resonate so loudly that they outperform the main drivers and the sum is still louder than what they would put out alone in that range. In the higher notes, where the main drivers are loud enough, the PRs are basically silent.

How would this work on a much larger subwoofer? I have a 15" 2000rms sub in a ported box being pushed by a 4k rms amp. Would the power handling change at all? Would space requirements change? Would a passive radiator increase the low end out put or would keeping it ported be more of a benefit? Thanks for your information and video!
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 7 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert on larger speakers this video is just how passive radiators operate. In my opinion on a sub that size ported is better, space requirements would probably change as you may need to accommodate a basket for the passive rad. if it was me i'd stay ported as ported can go lower frequency wise. If its a car subwoofer i'd suggest you look at Meade916 he built a system for his shop that uses passive radiators I hope this helps.

The passive radiators need to be as big or bigger than the active driver. If you used a 15 inch passive and add weight to it it would ''tune'' it lower. Or you could extend the port for lower tuning

If I have 2 drivers in 1 box like your speaker, is it better to separate containers on each driver w/ rad or is better for them together without partition?
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 6 жыл бұрын
I’m not too sure if I’m honest. All the speakers I have don’t have separate chambers however they do seem to have a tiny time delay on each speaker driver. I guess this is to stop them cancelling each other out

I have another one which I'm going to leave sealed at first for comparison. Wish me luck!

If by rupture you mean the air seal is broken then yes. Easy way to check if the air seal is broken is press one radiator in does the other push out and stay out? If not then you’ve lost your air seal. I hope this helps

The only reason to use passive radiators vs ports is because of space (no space for ports length) and for weather resistance (ports let the environmental elements into the enclosure). Passive radiators do not sound better than ports.

Gently touching the passive radiators is unlikely to cause any harm. As far as I’m aware the device shouldn’t be bottoming out. This can occur if you have the so called low frequency mode on. To see if you have this mode on turn the speaker up to full volume. Does it sound the same as in this video? If so then this is probably active. Deactivate to correct this :)

I once had a flip 3 and it sounded great, however i liked bass boost my songs, so every time i played it i guess it was pushing the speaker to its limits And then one day after 10 months i poured water on one of the bass radiators and to my surprise water went from one side to another, there was a leak in the radiator, but for some reason it played audio fine. Because of one year warranty i returned it and traded it for a charge 3 and learnt not bass boost it too much and now its all good. But could you explain why the flip 3 sounded fine? even with a leak in the radiator
@aspieblokesworld1890
@aspieblokesworld1890 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there my advice is to always play flat. In other words never boost the EQ also avoid going over 75% volume always get bigger than you need. I believe the Flip 3 does have DSP to prevent overdriving but if you play low quality music this can still damage the speaker drivers. as for the radiator problem you described these seem to be very delicate even on the Xtreme. I had a leak on one of the drivers in mine. It didn't seem to affect the quality of sound but i noticed the rads would pull in when it was playing rather than vibrate as seen in this video. I suppose a small air leak doesn't make a very noticable difference to the sound but knowing what to look out for may have helped! I hope your enjoying your charge 3 and hope this helped you out :)

+Aspiebloke's World Thanks for the advice however the charge 3 is more of the bassy side in terms of sound and sounds muffled. would it be alright if it was trable boosted because it sounds a lot more clear and natural with that present

when too much air pressure is created, can the passive radiators be extended outwards? i have a jbl flip 4, and after having it for a little bit over a year the passive radiators have come out a little bit, is that bad?
@aspieblokesworld1890

As far as I’m aware the air pressure shouldn’t be able to increase inside the device. You haven’t had the speaker in a hot environment have you? This may cause a slight difference in internal pressure.

I think the problem you have is your trying to ask too much from a small speaker. My advice is to always get bigger than you need for example I have the Sony SRS XB40 and never need to push it more than half a lot of the time. You’d be best to go to a shop and listen to different speakers don’t be scared to crank it! Also I have videos of a few speakers on test outdoors maybe give them a watch. Thanks for the sub :)
