What Are People Wearing In New York's RICHEST Neighborhood. This week we're in Carnegie Hill, Upper East Side to try to see what the 1% are wearing. is it all brand names? Or are they also shopping Zara and thrifted? Is it a mix of both? Or are there brands that we may not have heard of? I also lightly touch on topics of social class, happiness, and how to find quality clothes.

Weathly people are smart about money and tend to buy high quality pieces that will last throughout the years rather than buying things to stay on trend. So they won't be wastful with money to make it last. There are a lot of famous athletes, celebrities who wanted to part of that flex culture that are now broke.

One thing I noticed is that people in Carnegie Hill were not wearing expensive well known brands. However, the clothes they were wearing, even if just sweat pants, were all stellar quality, and could even be around $500 (like those aviator nation sweat pants). This definitely opens up a conversation about who Gucci and Chanel are actually marketing to, and what is truly a marker of status in this day and age.

interesting analysis. Apparently clothes won't mark much a status in these days. That was different in the 80ies. It is a fact, all high fashion brands are looking for new customers (see the mini bags). Do ordinary people also frequent the expensive upper part of NYC just to get the smell of the cooking pot without really eating out of it. Again some decades ago, at least in my city,, ordianary people went window shopping in weekends and highly bought a waffle or a cup of coffee. What then is the sense of all those expesive shops in costly city quarters. (the rent is enormous) I hear fall a couple of times the brand name Zara....what does that say about Zara?

@@southernhippie9058 I guess I'm different I've had so many fast fashion pieces that I still have since middle school and there still holding up most of my stuff was from Kohls, Sears, Ross, tj max since that's what I had around, I've only had one bad experience and that was from my first H&M purchase I got 3 basic tees and those things lasted a week no joke it was bad

I think we've been so conditioned to think that being decked out in the well-known designer brands is synonymous with wealth when in reality, it can mean incorporating basic pieces from "low-end" brands with high-quality pieces from lesser-advertised ones. Ohhh it's so interesting to see how people weren't completely decked out in designer brands and flaunting their wealth, but instead gravitated towards wearing really high quality and well fitted looks that are really classy and show wealth in a more understated way. Definitely love that there was also a lot of more affordable brands featured too!! Also super curious how you were able to tell who some of the richer people were just by seeing them on the street??

My mom was a nanny amongst the "1 percent" for about 15 years, yes the nanny knows everything but says nothing. Anyway, none of the people she worked for in Manhattan or in California were ever flashy, very understated in their clothing.

Loving how a lot of people incorporated the high-low wardrobe -- you don't need everything to be super nice / expensive / designer in order to make a nice outfit. Splurging on the pieces that you really like and will get the most value out of makes them that much more special, and helps you appreciate them more too (imo). Also I am really digging those Doc Marten x CDG shoes that Alex was wearing!

Here is why many people turn down the interview: smart people who are wealthy realize that they can be an easy target for someone looking to open a lawsuit on them, or target them another way. While being kind, they politely turn down an interview based on a possible threat or publicizing their likeness. Edit: most wealthy people do not want to be famous

idk but ppl in the comment section saying that old money is ✨understated and humble✨ while new money is shallow and loud rubs me the wrong way... both buy up all the couture gowns and vintage archival pieces anyway 🤡. We shouldnt be so quick to praise the 1% for wearing simple clothes, for 'being practical', and for wanting to appear 'normal' yet doing so with "quiet elegance". It's highly elitist and furthers the notion that poor people can make tons of money but will never truly be classy. It's almost a way to discredit social mobility. I swear yall only praise ~wealthy~ people for wearing uniqlo but when middle-class people do it, it's "basic" and "boring". 🤷🏻‍♀️

Most New Yorkers have a quirky vibe going on, as in its neither this or that. Like they raided a thrift store and their grandmas closet for most of their clothes. Its probably the only area of the country that its super expensive to live in but people's #1 goal isn't to look rich , glamorous or sexy, but to look interesting.

I grew up in Main Line Philadelphia. Def. Old Money. Most people took a lot of pride in bargains. I moved to Northern Virginia. All the "rich" people wanted to wear designer wear to show off. After several years hanging out with nouveau rich, I moved back to PA. Two weeks ago we had new cabinets installed. One of the guys (60 year old male) who came to install has the biggest yacht in the neighborhood. He works to keep busy. Around lunch time, he goes to his "meetings".....He goes home to take a nap. You will find him shopping in Walmart and will never know he is loaded. Never judge a book by its cover.

Advice from clothing researcher John T. Molloy years ago: if you want to learn how to recognize quality clothing, you have to actually go into high-end stores and examine the clothes. The feel, the colors, the construction, etc. There's no substitute for that experience.

Something I learned as a NYer is the use of muted colours and accessories that look fun and artsy. I havent lived there is almost 20 years but I still use gray and beige as a base in year long styles and it somehow looks more expensive than it actually is

I feel like once you have a certain amount of money, you just don't need to show it off, because you stop needing to prove yourself to anyone, especially old money, where in their circles, the family name probably speaks for itself. That being said, some of those comfortable clothes were deceptively expensive. that mackage coat was over $1,000 for instance haha

@@CynicalDuchess Anything thats cashmere is expensive and if its all wool.. and a lot of them were wearing wool and cashmere, which is excellent in the winter because it breaths far better then the plastic clothing which is warm but doesn't breath well. Also in general, most affluent people I know don't put it on parade and will for example not wear their most expensive things unless they are on vacation or in specific locations, wouldn't wear that stuff on the street. It's more new money who buys the showy stuff (aside from purses, for whatever reason purses are a big thing for everyone). It's more in their jewelry if you can spot real jewelry that I find is one of the bigger indicators but I don't mean the classics all the vloggers/instamodels get.

I've noticed that with wealthy people on a casual day, you will usually catch the most expensive items to be their shoes, bags and lastly their coats, not necessarily the rest of their clothes. I know someone who's very wealthy and buys expensive shoes so that she can keep on wearing them for years.

I work with very rich families in Manhattan & one thing I noticed they don't use Gucci, Dior & some other brands that "shouts". They prefer very eclusive & expensive brands l only known to their circles.For casual use they wear Gap, J Crrew, Urban Decay, Zara to name a few. True rich people in Manhattan are not conscious of designer brands but more of quality. These people have a trained eyes & feel for quality. It's only people who are "trying hard to belong" are the most conscious of designers.

All I know is that I’ll never be that rich unless something dramatic in my life happens. Wear what you want to wear. Be who you are. I have my own bias on first appearance but I still give people chances to get to know them.

I can say my experience living there a lot of people wear MAX MARA now a lot of people don’t know the brand max Mara compared to Gucci, Prada, etc but a lot of the clothes from max Mara is more expensive especially their coats plus it doesnt show their logo in the clothing which is nice and the reason why there is so many people wearing max Mara is because the quality of the fabrics compared to a brand like Gucci, Alexander wang etc. Fun facts LV, Gucci, prada, Celine is not what most people think is expensive but brands like Giambattista Valli,Jada Dubai,Azzedine Alaia, and brands like Ermenegildo Zegna Bespoke and other most people havent heard before because there is no logo and sometimes you need to have an wait list for one of the suits made

@@gwena9043 emm i dont know a book or blog about this but I do know that brands like coach, prada etc have clothes made in the same factory with the exact same material and look exactly the same like a simple white t-shirt but at the very end, they were given different tags and different logos. Sometimes they would add some details on it to differentiate the clothing but that doesnt change the fact the materials are exactly the same yet the same white Tshirt From prada would cost differently at coach ( A big price difference) . Another example is Kylie Jenner’s makeup line is in the same company as colourpop and for some products the color and formula is the exact the same yet there is such a different price differences and not because the product is different because it has the exact same formula but just because the product is labeled with a different brand.

I grew up with my father working in LA and Hollywood a lot for his job in entertainment and literally the SECOND the in shape 60 year old awesome dude started talking I was like "He's in entertainment." There's just such a funny, identifiable way so many New York based, Hollywood commuting types talk and act and I love it. Made me feel fuzzy and nostalgic. Actually a lot of this did, like the girls outside their school. I almost went to Dwight before we changed paths and didn't move into NYC full-time and I could have seen what those girls looked like with my eyes closed lol. 15 years on, high school girls are the same. My experience with fashion in the upper upper class parts of Manhattan tends to be more geared toward pieces handed down in families, vintage shoppers, and expensive luxury brands that aren't like THIS SHIRT IS FROM GUCCI obvious. There's a certain rich where everyone is tailored in nice outfits and look put together but wouldn't be caught dead in anything with logos all over it. A lot of extremely expensive accessories, but still, not always the ones with the huge logos or monogrammed prints. Kind of like, "I know I'm rich, everyone I know knows I'm rich, I honestly really don't care if you think I am or not. My apartment has two floors." Also, went to rehab (yes, life went sideways for me for a while) with an ULTRA rich city kid (I lived in CT and a lot of city dwellers would come in for rehab)...I mean probably one of the richest people I've ever interacted with (he was BIG angry at his parents for only allowing him access to his checking account and taking his savings and credit cards away because of his heroin habit...and that account had "only, like, 300k in it". He dressed like a homeless person while wearing thousand dollar plus outfits...and it wasn't the heroin, that was the style at his school and in his friend group. Literally left rehab one evening, had his driver pick him up with his girlfriend in the back with syringe ready, went to a fashion show, got into a fight with Lindsay Lohan, came back the next day with a bruise and his tail between his legs. Lived a life so few will ever experience, and he was still miserable. The woman in the headscarf and full silk was beyond chic and I hope you and the Tiffany's guy are dating now. Thanks for reading my first novel.

Was raised, and still live, in an area of Brooklyn more historic and posh than even Carnegie Hill, and noticed old money doesn't scream status like most assume. They live for J. Crew, LL Bean, and Land's End though. Craftsmanship, quality fabrics, and real design, no gawdy labels on athletic wear for sportswear in the daytime. Looking expensively normal and put together is their beacon to each other, not consumerism. Also, notice their haircuts were good and skin well maintained.

As somebody who isn't rich but grew up in Carnegie Hill I would say it comes from the upbringing not just how we look or the money some have I think it comes from the cultured environment that is so tight knit like on the large apartment complexes in Carnegie Hill with pools and gyms and parks and playgrounds within the building sometimes even small stores it condenses and breeds the feeling of old money and also many people in this area use to their advantage the power of knowing people and having contacts with people in the new money districts

their wealth is not invested in their clothing - but in things you cannot see. property, stocks, private schools, exorbitant vacations, top tier health insurance and other services. ppl all over NYC pretty much wear similar shit. basic outfits with the occasional expensive piece thrown in. you can find mid-priced nike suits paired with 800-1500 dollar sneakers in even the most poverty stricken areas. having money and having wealth are two different things.

The richest people I knew in my life were never too flashy with their large purchases. They never spent alot on their food, cars, or really as far as I could tell clothing. They had vintage high quality jewelry that seemed tasteful and not too out there. Now this is not to say they did not spend money. Really, they just spent it elsewhere. Travel (been around the world I swear ) and on good values. So patagonia,vintage leather bags, vintage furs, burberry, silk scarves. They traveled a lot so I believe they didn't want to draw too much attention to themselves.

Style wise, usually people want something other people can’t have/find. I think it’s peoples taste whether they want the brand on it or not. Rich brand = good quality so ofc they’re gonna buy them. Soulcycle babes - Nike/New Balance sneakers, lululemon leggings, Canada Goose puffer, a yoga mat and a green smoothies in one hand and an iphone in another. School girls - dark gray/blue pants like the ones in the vid, a skirt, GGs or Nike, usually hang out near starbucks on Mad & 84th. That's from my observation during many years living on ues :)

This is true!😅 I use to nanny around there. The worst feeling is when people in the building assumed I worked there before they assumed I live there. It was very belittling. Definitely old money around there. I would see the other moms talk down to the other nannies. I only felt welcomed and like a normal person around one family. I felt humiliated working with such snobby people so I quit. The humiliation wasn't worth the money.

@@kyladanae that's an interesting point. I used to work as a babysitter there too for, like, a year 1/2 and all the families I've been working with treated me very well. We basically became one whole family with each family.. They even gave me keys from their houses and so on.. the families were either english or greek, or half american half something else or jewish. So everyone was very very welcoming and nice and they used to give me tips every day haha. That was prob the best time of my life working with UES babies. Also as a fact, I was recommended to all those families by other fams, so it prob depends on who you work with
