This video oversimplifies pin feathers to an extreme extent. When the feather matures, the feather can be preened and the waxy sheath can be removed. You will know a pin feather is ready to be open if it is white and flaky. If you break a pin feather too early you can cause the bird to bleed severely.

They do need help, especially if they don't have a mate. When it's completely done ; it'll be silver and no longer has blood flow they can get most on their own but can't reach their head & other hard spots.. this video is misleading and wrong..

I think she os referring to the young ones. I think you can't go breaking the wax on all of the pins in the young ones, even if there is no blood flow anymore. At least I never seen it done. Some people might try to.

Chill my dude. Lots a young kids try to rip off not ready pin feathers. I think its a good thing to tell people to not touch them. A bird owner should know more than this video, and I don't think this video is for owners. Tldr it's a 20 second video on KZbin. It's fine to add more context in tbe comments but you don't need to be rude about it.

I dont think it is if she's talking about young birds that are in the middle of having their feathers grow in

Pin feathers have different stages of development. The ones in the video if touched, should be touched very carefully because they can still bleed. At the beginning, pin feathers cannot be peeled. At the end of their cycle, when they are very dry, we can help by massaging very gently one by one to break them down aka peel them. There's no forced need to help it. In nature among relatives and friends they groom each other but they themselves can also touch their heads (especially the caique), scratch themselves with other objects, the bathing... If this weren't the case, there would be many thousands of parrots with lots of pin feathers constantly. We insist, a pin feather has different stages of development.

Pin feathers are the new feathers that grow in birds during their molting process. They are also called "blood feathers" because they are still growing and have a blood supply running through them. These feathers are covered in a protective sheath which eventually falls off as the feather matures and becomes fully developed. During this process, birds may experience discomfort or itchiness, which is why they may preen themselves more frequently to help remove the sheaths and ease any discomfort

I don't have a parrot but I do have a small flock of chickens. I think my girls are self-conscious when they molt because they'll stay in their hen house until their new feathers have grown in

😢 awww this broke my heart. I am in the process of learning about chickens still because we just got land and intend to have some someday and all the people that live around us also have chickens. But I didn’t know they were so sweet and would follow humans around too. They’re so cute and funny.

This video is extremely misleading and could lead to several people mistreating their animals. If a pinfeather is not ready you should not touch it because it could cause your bird to bleed severely potentially to the point of death However once a pinfeather is done if the bird does not have a mate or any other birds around it to help, The pin feathers on its head and neck will be unreachable and will drive it crazy from how much they itch. If the pin feathers on the head and neck are ready and they don't have a mate, You need two very softly rub them in between your fingers to get the waxy coating off. This is only if it is white and flaky. If the bird pulls away from you it might not be ready. But yes please help your birds with pin feathers whenever they are ready.

At no point in the video does it say that pin feathers should be peeled. Thank you anyway for the additional information. A 20 seconds video allows for a very brief information

I believe this is a caique. It's definitely not a pineapple green cheek conure. Pineapple GCCs have beige heads, yellow and red bellies, olive green and blue wings, and long bright red tails.

@CowsAreCoolGaming 356 definitely not a sun conure. The body isn't the right proportion for a sun conure, and suns have a lot more orange than this little dude. This is definitely white bellied caique.
