it's a pretty bulky setup, sure. I paired my 8T with a Holosun 3xt, and between those two and the rear bui, I actually have to bridge the 8T onto the handguard (it's fine - I'm running an Aero M4E1 enhanced upper and handguard, so there's no gap and it's rock-solid, basically monolithic).

I have Eotech G45 and the 5x doesnt bother me at all. I think the eyebox is ok for a magnifier. The eyebox on all magnifiers leaves something to be desired so between the 3's and 5's we are sort of splitting hairs. The 3'x may be better but by how much? Is it worth the extra magnification? Questions you have to answer for yourself. I will say the Eotech 5's are much better than the Juliet 5's as far as eye box - clarity is night and day. Eotech 5's are also better than the Juliet 4's from my experience. With that said I have looked behind a 6x and to me - just my opinion - the disparity in usability between the Vortex 6x and the Eotech 5x was vast. The 6 was hard to stay behind. I like the extra magnification when needed and if you are trying to be more precise than hitting man size target the magnification really helps.

I am from the old Marine Corps guard, pre-ACOG, got out in 2004. One of my MOSs was PMI (Primary Marksmanship Instructor). Marines, other than Recon, Force Recon, MARSOC, Scout/Snipers, throughout our history ONLY ever used iron sights. Our KD course went from 200 to 500 yards. Generally Marines are very good riflemen, at least the old Marine guard was with just iron sights. I am not saying there is a right or wrong optics set-up. I am only highlighting that I think too many people skip leg day when it comes to shooting with iron sights or a red dot at distances we Marines, other military branches, and private citizens used to regularly shoot at. LPVO have become a crutch IMO, not saying don't use them, I am saying don't disadvantage yourselves by ONLY running the envogue LPVO set-ups only. Train with all of the optical options you have on your rifles. Ask yourselves this, If you have back-up iron sights do you train regularly with them as much you many of yo shoot with LPVOs?? And yes, Hop is absolutely right about also training beyond KD. 👍

As a Marine that was in mid 2007 and started with irons then got an ACOG later I have some opinions on this. Yes, you can train with irons and unmagnified optics, but you can't PID a target or observe it without magnification. You also can't easily verify a hit at 500 yards without magnification.

I've found that, asthetics aside, precise vertical alignment between red dot and magnifier isn't necessary. Like more than a half inch off didn't change parallax or usability. And furthermore, magnifiers visually clean up red dots that look wonky due to my astigmatism. I set the diopter, put a strip of gaffer tape on it, and it's crisp dot reticles forever.

Something you didn't mention (and this is a VERY small detail, I know) was that putting a magnifier behind an Eotech isn't quite the same as putting one behind a red dot. With a red dot, the dot is also magnified. With an Eotech, the dot stays the same size - which means it practically goes from a 1 MOA dot to a 1/3 MOA dot that allows for more precise aiming (if using a 3x magnifier).

This is wrong. 1 moa stays 1 moa, 2 moa stays 2 moa. The entire image in front of the magnifier is magnified. EoTech reticle doesn’t magically shrink to 1/3 moa. It’s physics.
@SauerkrautIsGood
@SauerkrautIsGood 9 ай бұрын
@ericstrauss9435 Eotech dots are actually infinitesimally small. The human eye resolves the dot at about 1 moa if you have good vision. This means that you can never magnify the dot, it will always stay the same size no matter how much magnification you put it through. Practically, this means that the dot "effecively" becomes 1/3 MOA when you put it through a 3x maginifer. The rest of the image is magnified, but the dot stays the same. In other words, the dot shrinks relative to the target. Yes, it is physics. Holograms are really complicated.

The EOTECH 3-2 and 3-4 do actually have a form of rangefinder. The circle is 65MOA, which is roughly the height of an average human at 100 yards. So doing the math of "does a human sized target cover the entire circle, half the circle, or a quarter of the circle" can give you a rough estimate of distance.

LONG COMMENT ALERT! I use the juliet 6 on my ballistic advantage 10.3 hanson barreled upper simply because it is sub moa with my handloads and I already have a twin upper with an lpvo. As for the juliet 6, the eye relief is pretty terrible for any rapid target acquisition however I expected that going in and I can't deny that having 6x capability on an accurate sbr can tremendously increase the range that people like to say sbr's are effective up to and the eye relief becomes a bit of a non factor when you know your needing or wanting an immediate 6x magnification straight from regular sight, you should expect to be forced to take time to adjust your eye to the magnification as well as find the area around your target before you can even find your target 90 percent of the time same as looking through a pair of binoculars and scanning til you find a marker. Performance wise i couldnt be happier and it seems to be a very sturdy magnifier with spacers and clear disposable lense covers you can use on the front and back. I regularly plink 300 and 400 yard targets with m193 and I go up to 650 yards with handloads on the juliet 6 and Ive hit my 12 inch gong at 750 yards multiple times with my razor gen 2 lpvo on the other 10.3 upper... not a HUGE difference for having a more mid range purpose built optic vs a red dot/magnifier combo. Eye relief is of course better on the lpvo at 6x compared to any 6x magnifier I've tried and thats all of them I believe.

Do you have any issues with durability and knocking the magnifiers off while using just the red dot? That's one of my big concerns about this type of setup... the idea of running around shooting with that magnifier hanging off the side makes me worried it won't be there when I stop to shoot

In my experience I had quite some issues trying to fit Juliet 3x with Romeo 4 and 8. I endend up using the triji one which works really good. No idea why, one would think that the same brand should work just fine but this was not the case

Where can I find an ultra low QD mount for a flip-to-side Holosun 3x? (I’d like to use it on an AK) Secondly, it’s CRAZY the new PA magnifiers don’t come with a QD mount!

I’ll bring this up, just because you didn’t. I ran an EXPS3-0 with a G33 on a Samson quick flip Mount for a long time. Not very long ago, I randomly took the magnifier off and ran a couple drills at the open Range and I found out I liked it a lot better without the magnifier. With the magnifier flipped of the the side, you lose a lot of field of view, the right side for me, basically any vision from 1 o’clock to 3 o’clockish was just looking at wall, this is problematic when trying to quickly adjust to a target on your right side without breaking cheek to stock weld or having to move so slowly you don’t pass over the target or moving too fast and missing the target completely and having to correct back to the left. Just something I found, if you have a magnifier, take it off and see. Obviously you lose some distance advantage, but in the grand scheme of things, I’d rather see something in front of my face over something 300m+ away.

I always saw them as an easier way to identify a threat at that distance of around 250 yards where you could still land rounds unmagnified but want to be sure what your shooting is a “bad guy”. Personally never was a huge fan, felt like extra weight that is underutilized. What do you guys think?

Hey @Hoplopfheil, have you noticed running the vortex 6x that its inability to return to "center" is noticeably worse than other magnifiers? I find when using it, my reticle can be in any random quadrant of the eyebox after recoil or flipping it in/out vs. simply being a bit off-center. Not sure if it's an issue with the product or just inherent to higher powered magnifiers.
@Hoplopfheil
@Hoplopfheil Жыл бұрын
I think it's more noticeable on the 6x mags than on the others, even ones using the same mount. Maybe it's the extra magnification, or maybe it's the extra weight of the magnifier jolting it when it snaps back and forth.

magnification does not extend the range of your rifle, or make you more accurate. It simply allows you to see your target better.
@jonathanrogers9961
@jonathanrogers9961 Жыл бұрын
@@shiftd_1114 The range of a gun is finite and dependent on the cartridge. Your optics and skill determine how much of that range you can use out to the cartridges maximize effective range. So an optic may let you use more of that range effectively but not extend the range. Also with traditional red dots and say 5.56 you have one zero and have to Kentucky windage beyond that. I believe he was talking about a combat zero where you can hit a target of a specific size while aiming directly at it, without hold over or kentucky windage.

Alot of new magnifiers have a way to "sight" them in, is there a way that you can use that feature to have a different zero with a magnifier?

I've used the 4x SIG Juliet magnifier with a Holosun red dot that has the ACSS reticle for a while now. If a BDC lines up with your gun, ammo, and environmental conditions, then you lucked out and I certainly can claim that. I ran the combo at a run-n-gun match (Big Ben Blast n' Dash) last summer where there was targets out to 600 yards and the BDC lined up perfectly out to that distance. I have a non-ACSS Holosun on my M&P 15-22 as well and I can put the magnifier on that rifle if I want magnification.

I don't know, for me, I just like having magnified optics, especially an LVPO, because it makes things easier to see. To me, 200 yards is pretty damn far to see what I'm shooting at. I even like magnified optics for 100 yards.
