great info! ... so basically use PNG 24 for web when possible, and TIFF for printing... even when sending a file to an online printing service.

Great video. I couldn't figure out what was the best format because my manufacturer uses Illustrator and I only use Photoshop. I was trying to send my product label with the highest resolution. Based on your vid - I sent them TIFF & PDF for print.

I so greatly appreciate Aaron Rutten's expert advice, saving me so much trouble, so I subscribed today. I have a question. I learned Photoshop, but it is always crashing my laptop (& it was free during community college but no more). So I need an alternative. I'd like to keep a simple digital sketchbook (on a win 10 lenovo yoga 14 laptop + wacom one screen tablet) of art ideas, with simple sketches & simple coloring. (Plus I also plan to continue in abstract/ semi- realistic- not full realism digital painting)... (& I am messing with photography/ bought a dslr for art reference & photography). At the least, can I get a suggestion for the best software for keeping a digital sketchbook? (I'd probably prefer to not need to learn a gazillion different programs, as I am an older artist. So I'd like to make the best choices without a ton of wasted time messing around). I'd prefer free or low cost programs. PS is too steep at $120/ year, especially when they penalize you if you want to take time away from PS to do other art, as I do many art media.

I was so confused because I never used laptop to draw, and I do online classes so my teacher need to see my drawing so he could noticed what I did wrong, and I started thinking how do I even save my drawing so I could send the picture to my teacher so this is very helpful!! Question: Save to web png only saves at 24 but 'save as' saved at 32 bit as you said? So it's better to save-as rather than 'save for web'. Also, when saving as .png, should I use none/fastest compression over smallest/slow compression - for best quality settings? And do I need to interlace it at all? Thanks. :)

I'm like what? Need to learn all of this. Just stArted painting digital and I wanted to add on to the picture so I made it smaller to zoom out and add but later saw so many pixels. God thing I had already saved the first to a few places the desktop being one. But I'm here to learn so I don't have to worry and I can save it and a backup with saving 5 save-as each step

Hello. Thank you for your detailed explanation. I'd like to ask why not save the digital work as BMP (bitmap) for archiving purposes? I noticed that good programs as Affinity don't have the option of saving as BMP. Isn't it lossless and uncompressed? So it must be good for finished works.

Can I re-save .jpg files in a lossless format? I was told that high-quality .jpg is fine, as long as you aren't planning on editing and re-saving it. Now I know better! I scan as .tiff, clean up the scans, then save one version as .jpg if I don't think I'll need to re-edit it. I know some quality is lost, but can I re-save a .jpg to avoid the lossy issue? (Basically, how to amend my ways?) Thank you!

Yes, but the loss of detail from compression has already been done if you saved as a JPEG first. The best thing you can do is save the JPEG as a lossless format for any future versions of the artwork so you don't apply additional JPEG compression to the image.

Most digital artists on Etsy are selling their work as JPG files though? If JPG does lose image quality, then why is it popular and not caused issue to customers? I'm going to be selling digital downloads on Etsy myself you see, so trying to check everything before doing so.
