Excellent video. Two points: 1. Contract farming could still be exploitive as the farmer bears the risk of reduced production and yet selling at lower than market price. During surplus production, 'quality' clause is loophole that could be exploited by the buyers to avoid buying all the produce the farmer makes. 2. The lack of legal validity of MSP was supposed to be counterbalanced by a govt buyer, the Food Corporation of India which is assured to be outside Cartals because it is not a private entity. The concept of Govt owned corporation to break monopolies or cartels is used in some countries eg France and is anathema in others eg USA. India belonged to former group with companies like BSNL, FCI, AI etc existing to prevent monopoly and cartelization. The current govt seems ideologically inclined towards dismantling this model.
@harshjain27282 жыл бұрын
I think you are totally wrong in the objectives of of PSU like BSNL and FCI. For this you have to look into the five year economic plants under which these companies were formed. The only objective was to to capitalise the existing resources in areas where no private investments were earlier possible. But in later stages all of these public sector units became proving grounds for heavy corruption. Let me tell you very clearly that no amount of MSP is going to guarantee any economic growth for the industry or for the nation. I buy wheat for my family consumption at a price of nearly 10 times the market price. Because the wheat I buy is 100% natural in European terms the standard is organic double plus. I would not even give the MSP for chemically grown produce.
@tenton4592 жыл бұрын
@@harshjain2728 1. msp is not for retail price. It is wholesale price for agricultural commodities without processing. 2. Many PSUs indeed owe their origin to an era where they were reserved for govt sector. But this has to with the fact that foreign investment would have been required in some form and liberalization was possible only when our exports were healthy enough. Agreed that state enterprises are vulnerable to corruption and sloth but corporate like accountability is a cure. Private enterprises are vulnerable to greed and competition is a cure. Prospective cartelization is in consideration here.
@thiruvetti2 жыл бұрын
@Tenton - what you have written is the half truth. BSNL for eg: are Cartals themselves. The way they float tenders and outsource tasks with vested interests is itself a glaring example. Also my relatives work in high posts at BSNL. These Cartals are mostly "communist" unions that prevent any kind of innovation or growth. If you linger around BSNL offices and watch what they do to get a task done, you will understand.

Adam Smith was right, free markets works, ola and Uber is not a problem as long as new players are allowed to get into the marketplace, and contrary to popular belief Uber still hasn't been able to post profit on a consistent basis they are still burning through a lot of cash to stay alive , it's very difficult to build a monopolistic moath around service industry in which anybody with a little bit of technical know-how and little bit of capital can start competing established players eroding their profit margins.

@siddharth76513 жыл бұрын
Hey Sumona .... Yes the government is not ending the MSP system BUT as has been pointed out in the video, it is not a legal mandate even today and it is applicable only to APMC market not to the private markets that will be established.... Now, what if the farm laws proceed as they are today without a legal mandate of MSP- The corporates will initially offer good rates above MSP to farmers, thereby slowly moving the business from APMC to Private markets. Slowly and steadily, the APMC will loose business and might go defunct because note that no matter how much they try, being a government suported organisation it can never compete with a corporate. As APMC fade away from the market so will the MSP, as it is only applicable to APMC and even there is just a mere guideline, not a legal mandate. Classic example of this is what happened to BSNL after entry of Jio in market. Bsnl is almost on the verge of collapse. It has lost so much business. APMC might meet a similar fate. Hope this helped. PS : I am not against the farm laws but we must have a long term vision

There are a lot of technical issues with this beautiful explained video. 1. A private company might monopolize - YES. Will a government controlled MSP be fair? NOT REALLY. Governments for political reasons can behave like a cartel or a pacifier. Governments do not process improve. MSP will always be a dynamic number season-to-season and will need scientific technology to ensure the MSP numbers work for farmers, consumers and AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY in a global sense. Are governments equipped to decrypt MSP numbers with perpetual scientific advancements? NO. They can't even predict weather patterns in India properly. Air India is the best example of a terribly run system that can otherwise make you a global hub. 2. Can Private players be cronies? YES. Will a free market privatizing be better than government controlled system? YES YES YES Governments lack innovation. Yes a private player might seem like a monopoly for a brief period but this is not set in stone. There are umpteen examples of Monopolies being broken in the private world eg. Colgate (overall FMCG), Airtel, Lux, Videocon, Nokia, etc. People always choose what gives them the best buck for their money. This is precisely why Jio broke the monopoly and is susceptible to such similar market takeover by someone else. You see innovation and tech advancements is what decides who wins here. In the grand scheme of things, the country advances. 3. Free market economy. YES that's the word, and it works. Eg. NASA vs SPACEX. SpaceX decided to go for reusable rockets which considerably reduced prices for space missions. Innovation was the key. This doesn't mean that NASA is not an innovation hub. It's is an inefficient one due to bureaucratic hierarchies. Free market allows individuals to process improve and make profits. And if this sticks well, people subscribe. Its harsh to compare Free market world with Britishers which was a mix of both oppression and state control in a lot of ways, that's a strawman fallacy. CONCLUSION. Regulations are necessary, but the bills at hand are taking control out of governmental inefficient systems and giving that control through start up incentives to innovators. WE STOP BEING UNREASONABLE JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO LAZY TO INNOVATE. Dirubhai was no one once upon a time. What Jio did to Indian Telecom system, no government could have in the duration Jio did. And the best part is Jio will one day be taken over by someone better. That's the scientific temperament and business acumen we need with Agriculture. Jai Shri Ram

Explained very succinctly. I agree with the assessment that these bills need to be tweaked; particularly in view of the experience of the American farming communities who have not only faced the adverse issues of corporatisation of agriculture, but also tremendous harassment and exploitation from companies selling farm equipment. In India, most of what is passed off as journalism, like everything else, is essentially armchair journalism and/or ajenda driven propaganda masquerading as journalism; bereft of independent research and fact checking...and hence the utter substandard reportage. In this context, your analysis is original and refreshing. I also agree that the federal government seems to have been wrongly advised to adopt a very obstinate and head strong approach to the problem. In a democracy, the government require to resolve issues expeditiously without allowing the problem to fester indefinitely and be exploited by vested interests. Hopefully, saner counsel prevail...

Following points - If MSP made legal , the market won't buy from farmers ... may buy from cheaper global market ...then govt will have to pitch in to buy and store ...unsustainable situation 2. In present state , the agriculture sector has to be deregulated so as to facilitate the pvt sector to invest in storage and supply chain ...govt won't be able to do it ..or will rather do it inefficiently... 3. Farmers need to be set free from an utterly regulated market and reap the benefits of free market ..Govt should support the farmers only when they are prone to exploitation by a mechanism of price control and incentive 4. Farmers needs to diversify so as to raise their income ..legal guarantee for a few crops won't change their condition ... Farming of only wheat and paddy , will have a disastrous impact on environment...same already witnessed in Punjab and haryana 4. On how crops , govt provide a legal guarantee for ...presently on 23 crops ...why Milk, fish , poultry farmers etc be deprived of such a framework ..nevertheless they are growing at more than 7-8% ..whereas convetional wheat and paddy farmers only at 3 %

By far the best explanation I have seen on the farmer's protest.👏👏 Few points that can still be thought of 1) Even though the corporates can have contracts with farmers but at the same time, farmers have the choice to either sell it to the company or to market as per their profitability. 2) In the case of Ola or uber the product used in the transaction is expensive to possess i.e. a car. But in the case of food items, it is difficult to do that as the products are cheap and it is relatively easy for the farmer to go and sell partial goods in Retail Market. Retailers will also adapt to new challenges. 3) A factor we always forget is that corporates may want to buy products but at the same time lot of digital markets are increasing which can give farmers ample opportunity to sell them in the market throughout India in one click. 4) I think we are also underestimating the intelligence of farmers even they can form a cartel. In many developing cities, many farmers become builders and exploited the buyers. Or another example could be they hoard onions during election season😅 5) lastly the good amount of money the farmer will get (even in the initial days)can be used by the farmer to build secondary income like cattle farming, poultry or a processing plant etc. Or educating their children which will then create a new breed of highly educated farmers. 🤟🤟 Overall the main pain is for the middlemen who used to get a massive commission without any effort. Keeping this in mind then we should look at the farmer's protest. The only con which I can see is - Farmers generally rotate the crops to keep the soil fertile. but if the price for a certain crop is lucrative then farmers may repeatedly go for the same crop which can damage the soil in long run.
@jobinm71162 жыл бұрын
In ur 2nd point you mentioned that the product used is expensive in Ola and cheap in the farmers market. The inflation of prices of household goods and grocery , vegetable etc. all skyrocketed in many states, the farmers were in tatters that lead to the suicides of many in the southern states and in the northern section as well. All of these incidents spurred from the initial stages of the COVID situation and gradually worsened the condition of markets affecting small scale traders and as a result the farmers as well. This was echoed all around especially the goods and trading, manufacturing industry, or secondary institutions in the industry. This was a situation that was happening in parallel with the creation and passing of these laws. That is among the chief reasons for the farmers solidarity in this issue. This side coupled with the privatization of government sectors and their alleged monopolies also spurred their belief in that aspect. The Jio telecom service is a fine example of this strategy in its Irreversible phase now in the present context of its growth, plans with the same price are offered with less validity duration, the price of data charges increased etc. The data rates prices became higher because they offered up many of it for very minimal and at time free of charge in its initial phase. This is the wide scenario that is seen in India ryt now. That is also a blaring sign as to why the farmers have every right to contest these decisions. Just my view in the general perspective
@jobinm71162 жыл бұрын
Also the con you mentioned can also be termed as a pro, because of digitalization as u urself pointed out. Let's take the same example of Starbucks, they have a wide range of customers now with different tastes as compared to when they started out. As these evolve now using AI they are able to discern their customers taste and so as not to stay stagnated, produce new blends and styles in their ecosystem, this may come from a variety of beans. Crop rotation is an effective method in which the soil is suitable as such for the farmers to grow it, these companies have a sizeable amount of R&D teams to do their research for them. They could help these farmers properly make use of government subsidies in fertilizers and such to regulate the overuse of a singular crop. This is the main reason that digitalization, privatisation, foreign investments of major companies like Google, Amazon ( was in an investigation recently), helped boost clothing brands, electronics, jewellery, cars etc. in the Indian Marketplace. This could lead to the government's success as well if implemented well. Because the current trend of major players excluding maybe a few like Tata and so on, in India owing to the current wave of privatisation the competition among players are limited to just 1 or 2. This is what he meant by loophole in my reflection of this video.

My mind started hurting when gov agreed upon all of their requirements, some of which were nonsensical, but farmers said that they don't want nee farmers laws at all. I think more politics is also involved here. The unions who has shares in apmc along with punjab gov will lose crores of rupees due to this. That's why they want the monopoly of apmc to stay.

I completely agree with the views except for following points: 1.Govt. brought these bills without making a consent with the farm unions, no confidence building was done. 2. Reforms are necessary but all the three bills lack somewhere and govt. should actively think about that. 3. And very important Farmers are not agitating against some particular points, they are agitating against the farm laws completely, which is not right thing to do.

So perfectly explained. Thanks. The politics I've been exposed to has taught me a tip to aid fight against any social exploitations. Promotion of education and promotion of participative politics among common citizens which together empower bargaining power of everyone in spite of which strata of society someone is. It's easily said than done as fighting any injustice is an team sport that we need to practice sitting with real persons having different opinions. Which organization or party you select to practice it doesn't matter as long as the group is neutral to gender, race, creed etc and you are ready to question even the organization you r part of to practice fight against injustice. It's just an opinion out of my learnings and very well debatable.

You have explained it so well, its crystal clear. You have to redo this video in Hindi as well so that people who are protesting and the people who are supporting them understand the facts. Now its clear to me that people who are protesting are middlemen and not actual farmers.

Please answer the questions below to answer the left out caveats in your explanation: 1. Does MSP applies all kinds of produce? Like fruits/vegetables/perishables? If not, why not and how to address those? 2. What is the break-up of 94% of produce those are sold below MSP with respect to - states, kind of produces and seasons? 3. Why the new bill does not tax the private players - but only the APMC licensed buyers? Is this not a big problem of the bill to force the farmers to sell to private players and make APMC irrelevant in long run? 4. Why the farmers are not allowed to go to court in case of disputes? Whether they can afford is a different question. In case of serious and mass exploitations, farmers can group together and try to go to court. But limiting them to DMs level is too much autocracy - esp. the kind of DMs who say 'break their heads'...... you should know in case of dispute they will take money from Jio and give resolution only in favor of Jio .... forget justice ....
