What are the main differences between gravel and item 4?
Gravel is suitable for swimming pools- We use gravel for under fiberglass swimming pools, and as backfill surrounding the fiberglass swimming pool. Water will flow through gravel similarly to how it runs through a pipe- If any water leaks under/around your swimming pool- we can easily pump that water out thanks to the gravel's gradation.
Item 4 is perfect as a base for pavers/patio work. The gradation in item 4 allows for a layer of manufactured sand to lay gently on top and leaving no room for the sand to migrate through it. This will ultimately provide a stable patio that will not dip in the future.

I have worked with hardscapes, pavers, new septic tanks and field lines, driveways, etc. for over 20 years and I have never heard the term ‘item 4’. I assume it’s because I live in the South. lol. We call it Crusher Run or Crush n Run. I can’t wait to start calling it Item 4 at work just to mess with the guys.

I've heard it called "C", "Q", "Diff", "Crusher Shot", "M&M" etc... How about we use the ASTM numbers nationwide. Can't do it because every quarry would get caught screwing up on 1/10th of 1% of fines passing a #200 Sieve.

Great video, although it’s already proven that wrapping a pipe with fabric does not work overtime, the fabric gets clogged and water has a hard time entering the pipe. It is suggested to not even have fabric directly covering the pipe, although on the sides and underneath the pipe work great

Hi Al, Good catch, that's what I get for using a stock graphic we found on the internet. I've never put a sock on a pipe. We use filter fabric behind to separate the soil and gravel behind the wall.

what’s the difference between item 4 and crusher run? Are they the same thing?
@AlbertGroup
@AlbertGroup Жыл бұрын
Item 4 is gradated to not have a certain percent that will pass through a #200 sieve. I forget the gradation ratios. I think of crusher run as Item-4 that has not been analyzed.

I agree, depending on where you live it could be called "C", "Q", "Diff" and the list goes on. You could also call it road base lol.

Wouldnt fabric behind wall eventually fill and block with dirt particles and pressure push wall over...
@AlbertGroup

The fabric is engineered to not do that exact thing you are talking about. That brings up a great point - using the right materials. We use Filter fabric, not weed fabric - which is cheaper but will plug up almost instantly.

When layering a gravel driveway do you recommend using gavel first then item 4 over that?
@aprilgeneric8027
@aprilgeneric8027 3 жыл бұрын
absolutely not, did you hear what he said about migration? if you are going to use item 4 as fill, use it as the base, when it gets wet it turns to clay like which is perfect for stopping the gravel from sinking into dirt or sand. sand first make an easy leveling base, then item 4, then class 3 or 2, then class 5 on top if you are going to do any layering. this will allow natural filtration in the sand to slowly let the item4 dry out, class 3 or 2 to let large amounts of water thru from all over to travel to a low land outlet water wants to migrate to and lightly vibratory compact it on the very top just to get it flat and intelocked from above, and class 5 to let some water seep thru from above but makes a better driving surface and looks nicer and is far quieter. put a silt fabric under the class 3 or 2 to keep it from sinking into the item4. it won't merge much except in very wet conditions but a heavy rain fall year will make it merge excessively more until it can't flow water. the larger class layer also supports heavier weights such as the occasional dump trucks, the garbage man, the delivery trucks like UPS and FedEx and say a firewood-fuel oil-propane-natural gas truck, the utility company vehicles when they do maintenance or outages. the garbage man and the heating fuels trucks do the most damage over time even to asphalt.

How would you layer a gravel fire pit? 3/4 clear base and 5/8 minus top?
