I was a 747 Classic Captain for more then 10 years back in 2000. Known as the " Queen of the sky" , we also called her: " the doctor degree of aviation". The best years of my 46 year career was piloting the Boeing 747. I really miss her.

I have been on the 747 for 28 years... flown all models except the -8... 😔😔... but the strangest was the 747SP... if you were heavy and high altitude... above the max OPTIMUM by a few thousands pounds... it had an odd movement... imagine carrying a wash tub about half full water and walking around (don’t know why you’d do that though) it kind of “galloped” a bit... you feel in the seat of your pants... but weird anyway. I even flew a B747-100 JT8-7A motors with a water injection system that we actually had to train for... it was active but I only used it once in simulator training... 747 is a great airplane and I’ll retire next year on the airplane. (The best airplane though was the L1011 and all Pilots that flew it... will say it is hands down the best and even compared with a brand new 747-8)

When the 747s first came into service on Pan Am (my family’s favorite transatlantic airline), I missed the 707, which felt more “rugged” to me, due to it’s stiffer frame and wings. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the 747s, especially Braniff’s 747SP, a real hot rod with a shorter lighter body and the most powerful factory engine option available at the time.

I was stationed in Germany in the 80's. I flew home for Christmas every year. Each time was on a 747. I loved the comfort, and the service I received. The best service was from Lufthansa. I also flew to my brother's wedding in California from Germany in July of '88 however that flight was on a L-1011. The flight was longer, and less comfortable. I was so happy to see DFW!! Flew to San Francisco from there on a virtual puddle jumper. (I forgot which aircraft it was.)

This my baby girl. Started at SeaTac International in 1986. I had one of the most special remember for life event that I will never forget...The first 747-400 arrived . it was being delivered to northwest. She was fueling up and ready to back to her hub in Minneapolis for the tour from Minneapolis to Hong Kong. the highest people were on her heading back. At that time I had my AOA (Aircraft Operation area) she was parked at south satellite that was are international arrivals. I had no more flight till last flight at 0130 am, I went over and went up the jetway stairs. and there was a lot of big wigs on board, I actually was with the check writer. I explained to him what id and i had some free time around 2 hours. I actually insisted to go on board.. And the guy who showed me around check writer. Him and I took the tour, the cockpit was amazing area i ever saw then he said go for it take your time. He said that I was the first civilian none paying of course, finished my tour and I could not believe it so I stuck around for a while and the cockpit was three now it was WOW. We talked for around an hour with the highest people for Northwest... I ill never forget this-Quite the memory for me...Ever lasting moment in my life...... Cool HU?

The B-747 are the most elegant objects flying in the skies at the moment. No wonder these are called "Queen of the Skies". These airplanes are probably the most fun to fly with and the experience must be overwhelming. Today's airplanes are not as glamorous nor comfortable to fly with since most of them are smaller and narrower and this gives passengers feeling of being cramped into some kind of a tube. Hopefully, these planes will fly for a long to now and hopefully, I will be one of the lucky one to fly with these.

It was amazing! They wouldn't let us in the cockpit, but we had the run of the plane otherwise, as long as we stayed clear of the cleaners. 1977, so the plane was no more than 8 or 9 years, and likely younger. This was before I knew to look at the planes name and info pate on the door frame of the entry hatch.

I’ve flown on a lot of planes and I can assure you, the 747 is the most comfortable passenger plane mankind has ever seen. Here in the Netherlands we still have 3 remaining KLM 747-400’s (combi) flying around as cargo planes and 3 others are sitting at the side (with no logos for spare parts). They were set to retire in 2021, but then covid-19 forced KLM to stop flying them... But after they retired as passenger planes at March the 29th they were soon in need again as cargo planes due to the covid-19 virus. Those planes are the best cargo planes (beside 2 regular 747 cargo planes) KLM currently has! Unfortunately this week KLM has stated that this time at the end of October all 747 combi’s will retire for good. I’ve flown a lot with KLM’s 747 as they were almost the only type of plane KLM used to fly to Suriname for a long time. As a matter of fact I’ve flown with Europe’s first 747-400 (KLM PH-BFA, in service since May 1989) from Suriname to the Netherlands in her year of retirement 2016... But the very last time I flew with a 747 was August 15th, 2019. When KLM’s 747 PH-BFT flew me to LA (with horses in the back of the combi!). Little did I know that this would be the very last time for a 747 to fly me... Nowadays the 777 and 787 took over. Even as the brand new 787 has a better oxygen system and makes me less dizzy: I would prefer to fly on KLM’s 747-400 all day! RIP Queen of the Skies🇸🇷🇳🇱💙

Lowkey crazy that the classic 747s are all retired from passenger airline service. I didn't expect that a 747-400 would already be the oldest 747 still flying commercial passengers.

I'll have to admit, what Boeing did with the 747 during development was impresseive. At the time, it was widely believed that in the future the 747 will be superseded by supersonic airliners for commercial passenger service. So Boeing must've had the foresight for the 747 to continue service by also designing it as a freighter should this happen. Fast forward today, and that foresight is paying off, as the 747 now continues flying as a freighter. Although it wasn't superseded by supersonic air travel, but by more fuel-efficient, and advanced twinjets.

I will miss older 747's, most especially Philippine Airlines' 747-400's which have been retired in 2014. I dreamed on flying on those aircraft, but it was too late.

Wonder how old Kalitta's 747 freighter is. There is something special when you board a flight and the captain greeting passengers: 'Welcome aboard our B-757 built in 1977 ...' Happened on a flight from OGG to PHX.

I flew in the "bubble" once before JAL retired the 747. I was super excited, but it had been converted to coach/economy seating so it was nothing special. I miss flying in the 747 on the NRT - YVR route.

Just very glad I have had the opportunity to fly aboard 747-400s many times back and forth to between USA and East/Southeast Asia over the last 30 years. Many nice jet airliners have graced the skies and still. But the Queen is the only one I'll ever miss being aboard and flying in up there.

There will always be something special about the 747. I remember the first & seems sad that their days seem to coming to the end. Always felt safe on a Jumbo. I can't say that for the modern Boeing airplanes.

I flew that Wamos 747 from Olso to JFK 18 months ago when it substituted a Norwegian 787. It was really in bad shape. I was seated upstairs in the strangest first class seat I have ever flown in.

Retired machinist for Boeing and out of all the planes I made parts for , the 747 was always my favorite . Though the 777 was a close second . Too bad upper management has steered the company away from how we used to develop and make aircraft . The pride we used to have was an every day thing .

I'm one that will miss the old girl. I was working at Boeing when I was just out of High school in 1968, and remember everybody standing around in the plant listening to the commentary of the first flight of the 747 over the intercom speakers... that and the apollo program made for some heady time way back then!

It kindof surprised me that some of the oldest 747s fly heads of state and VIPs around. I'm sure they have pretty much had every mechanical part replaced on them and lots of updates, but still I figured they would have newer stuff.

The 747-100 is a fascinating aircraft. State of the art in the late 60s and 70s, I had the impression of flying coffins in the late 90s (maybe because of Pan Am amd TWA). They seem to bought them onces and never interested a penny again. Maybe I'm wrong, but today a 25 year old 777 feels much more modern than a 25 year old 747-100 in these times.
