What are the origins of Biblical literalism?

I've always thought that Fundamentalists show by their hyper defensiveness not a robust faith, but a feeble faith that can so easily be destroyed by this or that reasonable argument. In short, their narrow-minded version of God is too small and too weak to put one's faith in.

I understand how, many of us can come off as condescending, passionate and even as bullies! But what makes religion or Christianity come off as weak? (An honest question)
