Several years ago, I got into some very crude DIY bookbinding techniques. The results may not be as slick as something I could buy, but I can use paper of my choosing and customize other elements of the book. It's also a good way to recycle materials like old boxboard & fabrics to make hard covers.

I'm doing this right now I make my own pocket sketch books of the good mixed media paper. I do it crude as can be. I fold the mix media paper into ¼ then I use a field knife and pull the paper along the knife to slice than I use the field knife and square the

Thank you for making these videos. I use loose sheets with disk binding (Staples ARC, Levenger, Atomo) and it works perfectly for me. Most of what I do is only semi permanent so when I finish with a project, I remove them from the disks and put the pages in a folder or in a binder clip. The downside is having to have a special hole punch.

if it's stitched properly, it will lay flat. By that I mean keeping signatures thin-ish, using multiple signatures, and not gluing the cover on the spine.

Interesting review, thanks. This apples to the printed word too. Spiral bound/wire bound is always my preference for musical scores and other music print because it lies flat on a music stand and can quickly be page-turned with one hand most of the time. For performances and practice either on a piano/organ or on a stand for instruments such as brass, that makes all the difference. I carry that forward to when I buy blank music-ruled pads because I'll usually be putting that on a stand once I've transcribed to it, again where laying flat is the aim. For a conventional writing pad I like spiral bound provided the margin is also micro perforated. While it's OK for right handed use though, if I write in them left-handed then the spiral binding is frustrating on the hand. I underwrite so it's not too bad but for a side writer it would be quite a pain.

Threadbound is easily my favorite. They last way longer than any other binding for something like a journal. Never had trouble with one not lying flat though.

Stitching is used as a binding on it's own with very thin notebooks that only have one signature. It's similar to the staple bound but lays flat open much easier because the stitching line is kind of off center, so it's not directly in the center of the spine of the notebook. And then the cover gets glued to the outer sheets. hard to explain ^^

I disagree about loose sheets. I take my A5 sheets everywhere in my folio. I use a fold back clip to secure the pages. Currently I have a storage clipboard holding everything. I also use A6 paper and have that clipped and in ziplock storage bag. I really prefer loose sheets. You have excellent videos. Thank you

Personally, I think clothbound notebooks feel more high-end. Nanami makes a fantastic Tomoe River notebook and it lays TOTALLY flat by itself, which is super impressive given how thick the book is.

Are there any side wirebound notebooks that come in the cheap mead notebook sizes?

Clairefontaine has some side wirebound options (www.gouletpens.com/clairefontaine-classic-side-wirebound/c/71) that are similar but also really fountain pen friendly. - Colin
