Have you ever wondered where those stairs in the middle of the 5 and 110 freeway interchange went? They go from Lincoln Heights to Chavez Ravine. Figueroa Avenue used to run two lanes north and two lanes south through these tunnels. They were built in the early 30's to replace Pasadena Avenue as the primary route between Los Angeles and Pasadena. After the end of World War two, the street became clogged with traffic. The highway was split and the lanes into Downtown were moved to the top of the hill, rather than through additional tunnels. With this change came the loss of the sidewalk through the tunnels.
