Probably should be noted your first 3 are student grade paint, not artist's grade paint. Additionally the opacity of the paint isn't the only factor that determines quality. Depending on the which pigments are used (pure or mixed) and if the color is formulated to be more opaque or more transparent. Also when comparing colors of paint it's important to check which pigments are being used for an actual fair comparison. The only pure pigment paint you have here is the Golden Cerulean Chromium, the others are hues which are a mix of 2 or more pigments. This isn't a bad video, but you are missing quite a bit of information in it.
@CreatedbyEmily8 жыл бұрын
Those are some of the differences that come with price point, but you are correct. However, what defines them as "student" or "professional" is not... specifically stated in the description of the contents and is possibly just a marketing ploy. That was why I went with companies and price points and not by "professional" or "student" descriptions that the tubes did not feature themselves. Some colors are meant to be opaque, such as Ultramarine Blue. The idea for my video was to stick with a particular color and it's "should be representation" to show the different ways companies would sell it under different labels. Now if the "student" or "professional" label is anything more than marketing... well, that's up to the buyer :)
@cinderblockstudios8 жыл бұрын
Student vs professional is far from a marketing ploy. Student grade paint has lower pigment loads, mixed pigments, less binder/more water, and additional fillers to drive down the price point. To say a color like ultramarine or another blue is "supposed to be opaque" is a misconception. Different brands may change which acrylic binder or how much pigment is added to make a paint more or less opaque. It all depends on the need of the individual artist. Yes there are SOME generalizations that can be made, but you still need to maintain a consistent quality when comparing brands to make those generalizations accurate. Otherwise you're teaching an opinion
@DedicatedBrainWorm8 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your thought out response! I have a counter to it, though :) Here is the basis for my thoughts on paint and why I feel like it is less of an opinion and more of my thoughts based on what is present. 1- Opaque and Semi-Transparent. FIRST!! A correction to my statement!!! Ultramarine blue is semitransparent (not opaque!) and this is not an opinion as it is an inherent quality to the paint. It's how it's marketed and sold? "Description Opacity: Semi-Transparent, Color Index Name: PB29 " from the following link www.utrechtart.com/Atelier-Interactive-Artists--Acrylic-Paint--Ultramarine-Blue-MP-01616-081-i1004029.utrecht Also, Golden's will show the semi transparent and opaque nature with a swipe of the paint across the front label. You see through ultramarine. I'm not 100% certain about the chemistry involved, but across the board that paint is sold and features that attribute from multiple manufacturers. www.google.com/search?q=ultramarine+blue+gold&biw=1171&bih=522&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjS7v_3z9jRAhVSgCYKHRx2AzsQ_AUIBigB#tbm=isch&q=ultramarine+blue+paint+gold&imgrc=nwj7QPzXwllbxM%3A 2- The idea that professional has an appreciable increase in pigments and binding can be a marketing ploy... but here's my thoughts on why! Ideally, yes, all professional grade paints would have more, but you are talking about battling companies who have no idea how much their competitor is putting in their brand of paint (though spectroscopy would probably be a way they gain insight into that, but that's not available for your average consumer to do). On none of the tubes do you have percentages given to you, unlike with food products, to tell you just HOW MUCH more there is. This means that a "professional" tube of blue in one brand may have the same about of pigments, binders, etc, in a "non-professional" tube of another. With no information to quantify it you go on faith that all tubes marketed as professional MUST have greater pigmentation and binders than those that don't. If the paint companies had that information listed to where an honest comparison could be made I would agree with you 100%. Right now, I definitely have moments of feeling skeptical about price vs. quality, especially when looking at different brands coming from different companies. Now it could be that there is some list that tells me percentages present in the paint, making it easy to objectively stay "YES! This one has more!" .... but I haven't found it. I understand that companies wouldn't want to put that out there, but it does mean that... you're dealing with the marketing/selling information for that tube of paint from that paint company that wants you to buy their paint. There is no way to say a "professional" Heavy Body tube of Liquitex does or doesn't have the same/less/more pigment and binders as Golden's, etc. The purpose of the video was to illustrate the performance of those different brands at different price points. Sometimes the $30 dollar tube is just as good as a $15 tube... and sometimes not! Sometimes I can "feel" that the professional paint is better but... that would also be an opinion. Without something TELLING me exactly how much of what is present, it's all an opinion and we base it on what the companies tell us and what our experience with that paint is. I just demonstrated them for the viewer to decide whether or not it made a difference while discussing how I felt about the performance of the paint during the video. Thank you!

I think the important thing to note is who this is geared at. I'm quite certain the demographic she's trying to reach here are entry-level/beginning painters. We (beginners) are fed the notion that inferior products will produce an inferior result. While that may be partly true, the ability of the painter is of utmost significance. Now, it's easy for me to see what differences I may get if I chose to buy Artists Loft instead of Golden. Now, I at least have an idea of what I'm paying for @ 4 times the cost, and can guage whether that quality is worth it to me. You start talking about exact pigments use, what binders, all that junk, and you start to lose the novice. That would begin to become an overwhelming amount of information. And no one in their right mind is going to assume the $4 paint is probably "just as good" as the $16 paint, but at least we have a general idea of what differences we'd see based on what we buy. Great video, Emily.
@cinderblockstudios7 жыл бұрын
Yes there is quite a lot of "junk" to know for the more advanced painter, but for me at least (as an fellow youtuber and someone with experience) I find that using a lower grade paint is a disservice to both the amateur as well as the enthusiast alike. I DO feel however that an artist should always choose for themselves, regardless of reviews or whatnot. It's important to gain your own experience and pick the paint that works best for YOU, not just for the "sake of price or quality." I know artists both pro and amateur that use quality paints and cheap paints, and the thing that stands out it not the paint, but the artist's skill. For a beginner it's good to know what the differences are, but at the end of the day it's still up to the individual painter to try it out themselves. I don't want to say Emily made a bad video. She didn't, but it isn't fair to say one paint is BETTER than the other without understanding the differences. Sorry for going off on this reply, but this is something I'm really passionate about. I've seen people completely change their view on acrylics based on using student grade paint vs. using professional paint.

Great demonstration, Emily. I am a professional and paint many very large paintings and murals, so unfortunately, I can't afford to use anything but Liquitex and Winsor with what I can charge for paintings. Customers do not know or care (I don't think) what paint was used. Have not tried the heavy body, so I appreciate you showing the difference.

I agree that customers don’t know, they just like the end result. I think you can make a quality painting using anything, just some materials may require more of your time and effort. Liquitex and winsor are great brands and I still use those for plenty of pieces I produce. If you have a Michael’s that is on your way home take advantage of their coupon- they usually offer 40-50% off one item. If you grab one tube of paint a day on your way home from work or doing stands you and amass a great collection. Let me know what you think of the other brands if you try them!

Ok this is 6 years after the video was posted, but are you sure you haven't mixed up the W&N prices? I am sure! I displayed the exact tubes I used and I was careful not to mix. Where I think you are correct is that I could probably redo this video. Prices have changed and a few of these companies have also changed not just formulas, but their label graphics. I do know pride can vary state by state and I knew sales etc may affect the numbers, which is why they have an approximate value. Galeria isn’t bad but… I have to put my vote with yours, I would take a winsor and newton tube of paint any day over it!

But the artist loft I'd a different color blue. If you got all the same colors the artist loft coverage would be similar to liquitex basics.
@CreatedbyEmily8 жыл бұрын
Artists loft sells "Cerulean blue" as do other brands, but they are clearly not the same color. Also, I did not find that it covered the same as Liquitex.... which is why the smiley face underneath shows through the Artists Loft and not Basics. Beyond that, when you are developing a sense of color it can be confusing to work with colors that are labeled a specific type of blue, such as Cerulean, but look different from what everyone else is calling Cerulean. I would have fewer qualms with the color difference if it was just sold as "blue" instead of teaching you that that shade is Cerulean. That sounds kinda silly to care that much about color variation and labels, but when you're looking for just the right color and you expect that you're using a Cerulean and that's not what happens? Very frustrating!

@CreatedbyEmily8 жыл бұрын
Good question. I have noticed a "thickness" variation between brands, but also between colors of the same brand. For example, I find that a Burnt Sienna in Liquitex is thicker than the Liquitex Ultramarine Blue. The thickest of these paints in my experience has been the Golden and Winsor Newton. Close behind that has been the Liquitex Heavy Body. If you're looking for thick coverage either of those three brands will do well for your project.
@alansartlog8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I use Golden but I was looking for something even thicker, not for effect or I would get a thicker medium gel, but because I use a stay wet palette and they get a bit watery if I'm not careful.
@nikolaosatsounakas89274 жыл бұрын
Hi there . thanks for your effort but unfortunately this is not an accurate comparison. The cheap brands are not marketed as Cerulean Blue but as Cerulean Blue HUE. Cerulean blue hue is not a single pigment colour. It is a combination of different pigments like Phthalo blue, black and white etc., trying to resemble the original Cerulean blue. Every company uses different combinations . So you are actually comparing different combinations of pigments. For the comparison to be true and accurate you have to compare a single pigment colour that is the same across brands, like ultramarine ( PB29 )or phthalo green (PG7).

Good Lord, don't use any of those!!! Traditional oil painting like Rembrandt, Jan van Eyck, Tiziano Vecelli, Caravaggio, Frans Hals, and so forth cannot be done using Acrylics, Oil pigments from Tubes or any White paint from the Tubes of today! Traditional Oil Painting can only be completed using Flake White, a pigment that must be made in the studio. All other purely dry ground pigments such as Charcoal as an example, must be mixed with Linseed or various Black oil mediums such as Maroger and Turpentine in the studio as well. If fillers are necessary for an additive body, like chalk or crushed glass they can be calculated in the percentage seen fit to achieve their necessary purpose. If you are an artist who wishes to accomplish the means of True Painting and the disciplinary standards to achieve Traditional Painting such as those listed above, don't buy your paint in tubes. If you enjoy Post Modern Contemporary Artwork and the lack of skills and abilities it takes to require what is necessary to complete the pictures idolized today, go buy some Winsor Newton. It won't make a difference. True Painting includes the knowledge and skills of first learned apprenticeship as well as the skilled abilities for brushwork that can only be gained by using Traditional Oil Paint. Have questions? Just ask. There is more to say. The minerals are far different in a tube than those that are freshly ground. Same as the chosen calculated fillers. Thanks to some education and artistic skills through the study of those named above we know this to be true. True Painting is REAL!

Haha, I did get excited didn't I! I do agree. Tubed paint use does not decrease one's skill. Modern artist Wolfgang Belttracchi shows this with fraud copy using tubed paint of over 100 various great world painters caught and jailed by the use of Titanium White rather than Flake. So we look at what the greatest skilled world artists today can accomplish with tubed paint such as Belttracchi, for he isn't the only. Nothing Traditional without ground pigments for it is not the skill but the abilities which are objectively booked in Art History. As a knowledged painter you know that the abilities for traditional painting with the names listed above cannot be accomplished using tubed paint. The talented skills of fraudulent painters will not diminish, yet their abilities will be if improper material is used. The video is about what paint Brands one should use. Brand has no matter if one uses pure matter such as Lapis Lazuli, Smalt, Azurite, etc. Dependency is with chalk, glass, oils and Turpentine. All self calculated. No rigidity. Painting is work, not hobby.

@Shao Yu Mai Wang The statement concerning a restoration of classical paintings threw me aside.Thought you might be a painter or visual cultural art historian. The very last 3 statements in your final response here provide evidence you're not. (....I don't think there is much point in retreading the past or even making something which is completely life-like. We have cameras now for that kind of thing. I mean, great that someone has that kind of talent, but I don't really see the point other than to prove you have the ability, which is a feat in itself to be sure). We would have had fun on Paul-talk! haha But, seriously, no offence. Check it out. you might be surprised! I will provide the link to his best video for you and you can learn a lot about Art History. If you are a beginner, there is a lot to learn.

@Shao Yu Mai Wang Excellent! You would still fit in the group then! Great! I am a musician as well. Sitar, mandolin, banjo, guitar, ukulele, tablas, and drum kit! Paul-talk discusses Classical music and writes it as well, unfortunately only on computer, but he has shared his Classical music writings on his channel and they're good. He's trying to work on the violin. I'm trying to encourage him. As you know it takes practice. For me, I'm more musician than painter, yet the older I get the more I paint, so at 39 I'm now spending several days a week painting and eventually will have my 3rd studio built. If you ever do go to Paul-talk, I'll show you his best video. He talks a lot about how politics and war have changed artwork. It's a deep subject.

While most of us would like to have the skill and the staff Rembrandt had. I am sure he didn't mix the paints himself and he would have used paint from tubes as well if they would have been available.

@@fritz4345 Because of tubes, many more today have abilities for skill, yet due to standard materials finish in Contemporary method, as obvious by IVA to finer balance the Illustrative and Decorative finish. If you don't have $5,500 in US bill, head to the Library for information not provided on internet, for it takes money or library card to rent or gain access to this information. The I-IV Volume Corpus of Rembrandt gives the art world a new comprehensive and excellent standard reference work , provides valuable insight into the genesis and condition of Rembrandt’s paintings, serves the community of art historians for the nearby and long future, belongs in the library of every serious art historical institute, university and museum and provides detailed access to Rembrandt’s own criteria regarding artistic quality. Beyond student apprentice, Rembrandt also worked alone. He would not use tubed paint without understanding material provisions. Despite larger productions of skilled work due to the easier access and working uses or methods of tubed paint, the greater reflective and larger mineral and glass particle provisions are not included in standard materials, so it would not take long to understand this standard material would not work for such production. This we see under microscope and personal view.
