Things I personally want people to know: - the media isn't always accurate about Autism. Not all of us are violent or likely to panic all the time. - we might need help but patronising/talking down to us isn't helping and is possibly embarrassing for us. - We are not faking it for attention or financial rewards!

One thing I can't stand is once someone knows I'm on the spectrum, they will quite often assume I'm stupid when I have (and remember intelligence quotient is a VERY rough guide) an IQ over 130 (again roughly). I've seen it time and again usually done by people who, if their brains were dynamite, wouldn't have enough to blow their nose! Another is my family (mainly my parents) doubting what I already know, that I am on the spectrum, of that there is little or no doubt. Yes, there are lots of misunderstandings about autism, many of which I didn't understand or know about until seeing them in others and finding all the funny little things are so often spectrum based. I know, how about we take over the world? I'm sure we could make it a faaaar nicer place ;)

That I'm not weird, I'm autistic. That I'm not unsociable. That I'm perfectly happy being single for the rest of my life. That I sometimes feel overwhelmed by noise, lights or sensation. That I hate having to explain myself when NT types can't follow my logic. That I don't smile like a halfwit all day, I'm of a blank expression. Not nasty, just relaxed. That I go on too much.....

Top of my list is for people to know that trying to cure autism by teaching autistic people to mask their autism is as bad as trying teaching gay people to mask their gayness. It might seem like you're giving them a better life through your understanding of what a good life is, but it's deeply unhealthy and only teaches people to hate themselves for who they are. The best known cure for autism is to accept them for who they are, even in cases where it's quite debilitating. Second is the empathy thing which thankfully got touched on in the video.

I want people to know that just because we're not showing if we struggling with with something like social life or doesn't mean we're not we are really struggling inside and trying not too show it. And please try to understand us,ask questions we won't be offended. I would rather you asked than assumed I'm being rude.

I want them to know that we can be great and amazing parents, even better than neurotypical people because we tend to look at the behaviour and needs of our children and their limits more and respect them and don't just force them to do something they don't want because we know first hand how that feels like and how much distress it can cause... My 14 month old (not yet tested but already showing signs of being on the spectrum just like me and quite some people from my side of the family) loves to bang his head against the wall before going to sleep (not quite sure but it does help him fall asleep quicker and more easily) and instead of freaking out and trying to stop him from it I simply put a pillow under his head every time I see him going to start the headbanging. He doesn't really mind it and he still falls easily asleep. He loves lights and reflections and I only watch out for him to not hold a light source directly in front of his eyes and the like. I don't force any clothes on him that he clearly doesn't want to wear in that moment and I make sure to inform him of any plans and activities as soon as possible. I've heard neurotypical people trying to tell me some weird reasons of why my son does certain things when they're clearly autism traits and I can explain as much as I want that my child is stimming or sensory seeking but they always refuse to listen. I've had one lady (who doesn't have a clue about autism) constantly telling me that me insisting on getting my child tested for autism is harming him and other things. I have explained to her multiple times that he has to get tested because my side of the family is mostly on the spectrum and that his other side of the family isn't that "normal" either (his uncle for example has ADHD and depression while his father is too "normal" for an autism diagnosis but still doesn't fit in with everyone else) and that I just want him to get the help he might need as early as possible and for that an early diagnosis is crucial... I really don't think she'd be able to grasp the major difference of being diagnosed early and help/accommodations versus a late diagnosis and then getting help/accommodations if she'd even be better informed about autism. I've experienced and seen first hand with me and my brother how much damage can happen without an early diagnosis... What people also should know is that just because we don't look you in the eye or face doesn't mean we're not listening to you. In fact some of us can only clearly understand you when we don't look at you. That's certainly the case for me. I get distressed and confused and lose any train of thought or ability to listen when I look at someone. My attention span is better when I look at something else in the room... And I can confirm the bias against females on the spectrum. I stood literally in front of an autism expert while stressed out (he let me wait for over 30 minutes despite me having an appointment and he didn't let anyone notify me of the fact I had to wait for quite a while) and stimming in a very stereotypical autistic way and he told me I "very likely don't have autism" and basically said I shouldn't get tested for it but if I really insisted on it he would test me. Needless to say I didn't got tested by him and instead went somewhere else for a diagnosis. Funny how the doctor who actually diagnosed me was shocked by the fact that I wasn't diagnosed yet despite being so stereotypically and obviously autistic...

After having my son who was diagnosed with autism at 2 I went on KZbin to get more support and understanding. I eventually clicked the suggested video about autism in girls and almost had a panic attack when I realized I was on the spectrum too. I am in the process of getting my diagnosis and told one of my closest friends yesterday. She got this strange look on her face and said, "I wouldn't have pegged you as autistic." I explained to her about masking and that seemed to help her understand a bit more. Thank you for making this video, I may share it with my friends and loved ones! :)

"autism doesn't have a 'look'" - Honestly we need to go way back to the basics here. People still get autism mixed up with Down's. Anyway, the thing that I want people to know is that.. you can read a list of traits, but you may not understand what they look like in real life, especially for an adult. Like, me liking routine, having trouble transitioning, having obsessions, and even stimming... it doesn't look like me being a helpless slave to these uncontrollable forces. It just looks like a person with these things as part of their personality and mannerisms. It doesn't look like Rain Man frantically rearranging the furniture in nonsensical ways (what a weird scene IMO) it looks like someone who walks into a messy kitchen and tidies it up. It doesn't look like someone who refuses to eat something new for lunch, it just looks like someone who almost always brings the same thing for lunch every day. It doesn't look like me rocking in the corner staring at the wall like a mental patient in a movie, it just looks like I'm unusually fidgety most of the time. It doesn't look like someone crying and refusing to stop what they're doing, it looks like someone who has trouble getting ready for bed on time, or is always rushing to leave for work. I'm an adult. When I was a kid I had a lot of trouble, (and I did cry when I had to stop what I was doing..) but I have worked on myself. I'm an entire person. I use swear words. I understand sex. I understand responsibility and consequence. I laugh at inappropriate jokes. I have opinions. I'm not a helpless naive puppy.

@@garyfrancis5015 Well, "the look" generally is just stimming. Is that what people mean when they talk about the look, or do they mean like Down's syndrome? I get the impression it's the latter. There was a comic a long time ago on deviantART that got featured one day, and it was about an autistic girl. People in the comments were saying "she doesn't look autistic". This was a comic, as in cartoon drawings. And she just looked like a normally-drawn little girl. So that kind of thing is why I think that's what people mean.

@@garyfrancis5015 Asperger's as an autism diagnosis is being phased out in many places (certainly the UK) because it was thought to be a completely separate condition (The DSM5 is already 2 years old based on information gathered over the previous 10 years so may not have these differences as yet). Our understanding of autism treatment and diagnosis is rapidly changing). OK, if autism has a look (which I don't agree with as the ONLY requirements for autism are neurological differences in the brain structure (hence Neuro-Divergent compared to Typical)), what would it be? It has common BEHAVIOURS, such as stims like rocking, banging the head etc but there are no physiological differences - it's all in the brain

I'm autistic and I still think or expect autistic people to look a certain way, which I know is totally wrong. It seems difficult to get that out of my head, so I can see how a normal person would definitely think that autistic people should look a certain way. It will probably be difficult to change their thinking on this too.

Hmm I kind of get what you mean but that's just a judgement people unconsciously have I think when they don't know anything about something. You kind of piece things together and form a view based on that. Definitely not having a go here but I agree that it's something that would take forever to change.

I'm autistic, I like video games and I like researching them by internet, magazines, leaflets, some from art work, collecting the games and consoles, most of the games I have 12+ age rated games, I don't like the blood and gore types it's mostly Nintendo games I have.
