A green card holder who works and contributes to SS gets a pension and Medicare when he/she retires. That's what my good friend told me.

Hi Melisa. I am a green card holder for little more than 5 years and turning 65 in just a few more days. Never worked in USA. I do have for me, my wife and 2 kids a good BlueCrossBlueShield health insurance that I like and intend to keep. As I have a high income I am not interest in Medicare options. Am I forced by law to get Medicare even I do have private health insurance ? Many tks. Luis M.

She was discussing primarily Medicaid, which is a welfare program that many elderly need it to pay for nursing home care, after their assets are exhausted. Medicare is not a welfare program nor is it free; even citizens who have worked here their whole lives only get hospitalization coverage free and must pay to purchase full coverage for outpatient and prescription coverage. People who can’t afford the full Medicare premiums may enroll in Medicare Advantage, which despite the name actually offers lower coverage for serious illness. If people miss the Medicare enrollment period, they may not be able to enroll in any Medicare plans without penalty, so that’s why reminder letters are sent out when someone is around age 65. You’re lucky you can afford market-rate insurance.
