Hey John, neat lesson. Love that guitar. I've en joyed your videos, especially the Larrivee you reviewed some time back. I really enjoyed a gig you were part of in Austin back about 2010 or so, called "The Outlaw Trail". There were some great performances in that show from Joe Ely, Raul Malo, Rodney Crowell, Ray Benson, Leroy Parnell, Danny Shirley, Del Castillo, Alex Ruiz, Russell Smith, Jeff Plankenhorn, Walt Wilkins . And memorable performances by Carlene Carter, Jesse Colter, Holly Williams, Suzy Bogguss and Megan Mullins.Plus a few more fine artists whose names escape me as I write this message. What a show. And a great backup band as well.

Johnny, Johnny, JOHNNY! we need to talk! Chord spelling 101, how are chords built? Chords are built by stacking thirds, which is a way of saying, to find the chord tones from any note (i.e. chord root) in the scale, you must leap frog over every other note in the scale. So for example, in the key of C, where the notes of the major scale are C D E F G A and B, the C chord will be C, E and G. the D chord will be D, F and A (creating the minor triad) the E chord will be E, G and B (also minor because the distance between the root and the third is a minor 3rd) and so on and so forth. Let's take a second and look at the E Major scale: E F# G# A B C# D# and back to E as the octave of itself. now how do you spell an E chord? E G# and B. It is beyond egregious to be telling influential young guitar brains that an E chord has an Ab in it. the key of E is a sharp key, this is valuable shit and does impact communication with other musicians and one's ability to be taken seriously in a rehearsal, teaching or gig situation. Of course they sound the same but that's not the point. Why not Ab? Because A is the 4th of the key of E, and it doesn't matter that this lessons talks about chromaticism, calling a G# and Ab is just plain incorrect. Why? Because in a major scale, in order to extrapolate all the beautiful patterns and possibilities of the key beyond the ordinary shapes that people learn by rote, you need to have your ducks in a row. If you rename G# as Ab here is your scale E F# Ab A B C# D# E...where's your G#, try playing Sister Golden Hair and tell me you think of that first chord as Ab-, I doubt it. the note Ab relative to an E bass is called a diminished 4th (any perfect interval lowered by a half step becomes diminished. If you tried to call the D# of the scale an Eb that would be a diminished octave. It's a reeking dog's breakfast of shit if you don't get your musical alphabet sorted out. I think you're a great guy who presents fun things in admirable ways but I implore you to get this basic chord spelling business under wraps, if you need any help I'm just a click away!

John, this is pretty cool, I like it. Plus with a little work I might be able to do it and I like the idea of the playing in all keys. I'll send you a link when I get it down, uh yeah, uh, we will see... Hey Tanks Brudda, I really like it!

fun stuff. wouldn't the first version be key of A though? Cause it's descending E, D, C#m, Bm, so 5, 4, 3 ,2?
@christian_santangelo9 жыл бұрын
+Jesse Oh To be theoretically correct, yes this would be in A. Or he's playing with modes here as well. I dunno. I like your answer.

Thanks John,but,I don't think I have the patience to learn that hybrid picking. That first example you gave is something I already do from time to time,but I use a pick. It would cause me so much grief to try and pick those strings with my fingers! This old dog is not good at learning new tricks.
