What BREEDING KOI in Australia looks like!! 😍

It was an honour to interview Mr Allan Bennett, ZNA Assistant Certified Judge, Koi Society of Western Australia. In this video, Allan shares about his breeding experience.
Fortunately, the koi breeding season in Australia has just started which meant that I had the opportunity to film Allan put his first koi spawn of the season together.

Thanks Jonathan! Glad you enjoyed it. Koi carps are known as scatterers when it comes to describing the type of breeders they are. External fertilisation occurs, in which the males chases the females in the courting phase. The hormones released by the males induces the female to release her eggs, & then the males take the opportunity to spray their sperm over the eggs released. Given this breeding mechanism, the actual fertilisation rate in the wild is actually pretty low. Hence, the ratio of 2males to 1 female seem to work pretty well in captivity breeding. In this day, artificial spawning is often done to maximise the fertilisation rate. Hope this helps to answer your question!
