Sound design is one of those things. I always notice as well. Older games have what sound more like video game sounds as opposed to modern games that have too realistic sounds

High difficulty allows for individual style. If the game is impossible to play at near skill cap you have to make individual choices as to what to use your attention/practice/apm on while still being successful. In sc2 you have to be good at everything all at once because you CAN be good at everything all at once. In bw you can make a career on just being insanely good at mutalisk micro or shuttle reaver play, etc.

there is less opportunity cost to specialization, and also less incentive to master all of the mechanics. I also feel like lower tier competitions in SCii show more individual style.

I like the sound of this guy, seems like someone I could co-cast games with and have a good time talking to. Though I think he already has a co-caster that's a total sausage monkey so I'm out of luck.

Interesting that he mentioned sound design in the opening. I've always thought bw has the greatest sound design of any game I've ever played by a mile. Whoever did the dialogue and sound effects for bw is a genius. I can tell you every line of command dialogue for every unit in the game including the zerg sounds and they're all iconic. "Need a light?" I don't even remember what the marines say in sc2. Every unit has a distinctive identifiable sound that can be heard through the auditory clutter of a battle+background music. It's not messy and it all sounds loud and crisp.

The control of individual units and small groups instead of death balls that die instantly (or lag horrifically). It looks clear whereas most SC2 maps look like crap.

I loved StarCraft 1. I was hooked from that initial cinematic with the salvagers getting killed by zerg in the space station. Such an iconic cinematic! I hated Broodwar. I hated the shallow, ultra-evil Kerrigan and the whole super swarmy zerg thing, and it seemed like the whole game was just totally dominated by all that. It was painful and horrific to see it become massively popular. I just flat out refused to buy it or play it at all. When StarCraft 2 came out, at first I wasn't sure if I liked it more or less than StarCraft 1. The graphics were better, but somehow a bit strange. The pathing was more free and responsive, but I wasn't used to it. But I got use to it, and after I did, when I'd go back and try to play StarCraft 1, it seemed like StarCraft 2 was so much better that I didn't even want to play StarCraft 1 anymore. One thing I really appreciated about SC2 was shorter matches. 10 to 25 minutes is great. 45 to 90 minutes to play one match is just too freaking long. I absolutely loved the story arc in SC2! I mean just watch this thing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWqtqqFpjLelgNk I know a lot of people hate it now, but. Whatever. I loved it. But the constant patching and changing of SC2 was kind of annoying. Just about the time I thought I was maybe figuring a few things out, I got the rug pulled out from under me. Over and over and over. But in the end, they kind of landed in what feels like a pretty good spot. I know BW became really popular in Korea, and remained so long after SC2's popularity rose and fell. Even after watching videos like this one, I'm still not exactly sure what that is about. It seems like it's just about the Korean love for retro games and their veneration of retro gaming skill, to the point where retro game champions become actual celebrities. BW is definitely a lot more retro than SC2.

Just comparing the siege tanks in the two games tells you a lot about why Brood War is better. There is almost no drama in SC2 that depends on a single or very small number of units or individual player decisions.

It is kind of nuts to think of the longevity of BW and AoE2 compared to their younger iterations.

"There is not a huge difference between the number of units fighting in SC1 and SC2." Ok, duded. Next try.

Right? The change in hotkeys was massive, but supply is still capped at 200. idk exactly what he meant.

Imagine quoting something, and your only criticism of the quote is "Next try." Do you think that will give anybody additional information, or care at all why you might be right? Lol

As someone who watched every day9 daily, every state of the game with itmejp, every tournament of sc2 until the hots Exodus, and never played brood war even once until remastered, I too have a low opinion of sc2

There's a lot of automation in SC2 in so many regards from economy management, production to unit control that fills in the potholes of a players lack of ability. Comparing it to a game like SC1 where you have almost none of that automation and everything is so unforgiving, it's easy for SC2 to look more like a mobile game that plays it self by comparison to that particular game.

@@XUNsc Right, they got rid of lame time wasting mechanics that don’t add enjoyment. And this is bad for some reason.
