I had my mice in a wire cage we bought when we got them from the pet store. We actually ended up discovering there was a wild mouse in the house; he was small enough to get through the bars and got one of my mice pregnant 😬 Definitely recommend bin cages.

I use this as a birthing cage for my rats (I'm a UK breeder (Rala Rattery)). It's not as sturdy as some other cages, but brilliant for what I use it for and I'd imagine, with some minor modifications (personally I think bar spacing is quite large at the rounded points at the top corners, which could be fixed with a bit of garden wire) it would make a good cage for a male mouse or a few females.

My mom hates mice and rats too. But when I was younger I convinced her to let me get a rat. She agreed. I've had a few since then but it's hard when they're not from a good breeder. You usually get rats that don't really like being held so I've had only one good rat from all the ones I've gotten. A few days ago my maintenance worker found a small mouse stuck in a glue trap in one of the other apartments so she asked if I wanted to help get it off. I ended up keeping the little one and I'm hoping it's female so I can buy 1 or 2 more and get a bigger enclosure. My mom isn't thrilled I have it. She wanted me to step on it. 😒 I don't roll that way. I'm currently working on getting it used to me and so far it's not too bad. It has nipped me a few times out of fear but it didn't hurt or leave a mark. (Yes I know the risks) The mouse is fully covered in fur, can run and walk around just fine, has small teeth and I've seen it eat solid foods but I suspect it's still on the mix of formula and solids. It literally looks like a tiny version of an adult house mouse. I suspect it's around 2 or 3 weeks old but can't say for sure because it looks tiny. I can't see any male or female parts so it might not be mature yet so there's still a chance I have a little girl. I was gonna buy some formula but my mother thought that would be a waste since it does eat solid foods here and there and at most it'll be another week till it's weaned. If they came in smaller containers then I would. I've given it water and different foods like Oats, bread, spaghetti noodle, a piece of watermelon, Oats mixed with baby food, which I was told would help but I can't get it to eat it. I've seen it eat cheese in the tank and had it eat cheese from my hands and heard it eat from a dog treat. I wish I knew how old it was exactly though.

I personally really liked crittertrail cages for my mice, and my mice loved them too! I would definitely recommend having one more cage than the amount of mice you have all connected to each other if you do go this route (for my 4 girls I had 5 cages) they liked it a lot more than their 40 gallon tank that they had previously been in, and they were a lot less skittish in the crittertrail cages(They passed away a few months ago but lived very happy lives)
@Emiology4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately there’s only one critter trail that is suitable for mice and hamsters and that’s the super habitat. They need unbroken floor space which most critter trails can’t provide, along with not being able to put much bedding inside. I think critter trails can be okay when they’re connected to a large bin cage to give them a space where they can freely run and burrow
@Kira-nu5dd4 жыл бұрын
Emiology when my mice were in a 40 gallon, I gave them 7 inches of bedding which they didn’t even use. The only thing they did with it, was bring it to their nest. Also, if the minimum for two mice is a 10 gallon (200 sq in), then why can’t 2 mice live in an unbroken 320 sq in? (160 sq in each) I chose to House them in crittertrails instead, because once I connected them to my 40 gallon they never went in there (they only went in there every now and then and once they would step out of the tube they would climb right back up it again.

I would recommend going for a taller tank so they can burrow and clime more although they can be difficult to clean out so I would keep that in mind. My tank has metal mesh at the top which is perfect for hanging bottles and swings!!

I was surprised to see the exoterra! I'm in the states and I got the Large and it is perfect! It keeps my mice safe from escapes and break in's from cats. I keep my mice in a separate room but it gives me peace of mind. If anyone needs idea for hanging things with the exoterra screens, I just went safety pins & hooked them through for light items like ropes. I also drilled small holes along the inside of the black frame to hook slightly heavier items. But nothing over a few ounces & you have to spread the weight evenly. You can also use the hooks on the top backs where you would run cords through if using for a reptile.

The bottom bin is a little longer than the top bin, but only about half as tall. There is chicken wire on the side and lid so they have circulation, and they have a hammock, a sputnick, a wheel, a running disk, and lots of cardboard to hide in and chew. I'm not the best at working in sq inches but as it's a similar length to the ikea detolf i'd say you could have a nice large group of about 5-6 females if you wanted to :) It depends on how big the strips of mesh on the top are but if they go all the way along the top it might be okay.

@nzpaws4 жыл бұрын
I'm not who you were asking but I thought I might answer anyway. I don't suggest buying/adopting just one more female mice, go for two, because if these two do not get along then you will have the issue of trying to pair the newer one up with a friend. If your female is not showing signs of stress or depression and it's seemingly happy on her own then you can leave her on her own for now. There are quite a few conditions where it is appropriate to leave the house on its own and this may be one, but it is down to your judgement

I really wish there were better, bigger cages available for mice. I'd absolutely splurge on a cage like that. At the moment even the biggest ones commercially available are in my opinion just ridiculously small. And terrariums, even custom made ones, pretty much always look way too poorly ventilated to my taste. I wish there was something like Critternation for mice but with smaller bar spacing. Practical doors, a sturdy frame and the option to combine similar cages into a bigger one would be brilliant. Ferplast's Multipla hamster does seem to attempt something like that but to me it looks like it's on the verge on collapse at any moment. And does not look very escape proof, either. Or practical for handling the animals, or cleaning.

You have some awesome cages on here! I’ve always wanted to build an ikea limmon ( how ever it’s pronounced 😂 ) as its £30 so very cheap and has around 800 square inches of floorspace so that will be the cage I build when my current cage breaks or gets to old , but I feel like most people don’t use the little freinds grosvenor rodent cage from amazon in their videos and the measurements are 78x47x36 so it’s got around 550sq inches of floorspace and it’s a great cage! I use it for my hamster and he loves it, it’s also great for mice and it has a deep base of 4-5 inches for lots of bedding room and plenty of space to add your rodents requirements and more 😁☺️

Im thinking about getting mice as my next pet and I want to use my old hamster cage which is the critter trail super habitat. Would this be a good cage for 2-3 female mice?

It would be okay, I know it's one of their better cages when it comes to floor space. I do think theres better alternatives for mice though, you can't add too much bedding into the base for them to dig, but if you were to fill it up to the top it doesn't leave much height for climbing toys etc, unlike hamsters mice really enjoy and need space to climb on things so I think a taller cage would be better.

Love these! I actually have the Prevue Hendryx for my girls and they really enjoy it! I do have a question for you, though: Where did you get the pink and black wheels? I love them but I can't find them on the U.S. Amazon.

Would you say a bin cage or a diy billy cage would be better for a mouse?

My cage is 48 × 38 × 30 cm, too small I know. I have 3 baby mice (around 5 weeks) in it currently. I'm planning on upgrading once they're older, but is this ok for them at their current age? I will of course upgrade when they're adults. They have toys, 2 floors and hammocks and stuff. They seem fine in my opinion. The cage has tubes that can be connected, so I can easily add another cage and connect it with tubes. Am I being an idiot or is this ok?
