Good advice Mike. I bought my first DSLR nine years ago. I did my research and decided upon a Pentax K20D as it was best suited for the type of photography I wanted to do, which is mostly outdoors, so I wanted something that was "Weather Resistant." It has stood me well over the years, and still is a great camera. However, I now want to up my game, and have just purchased a PENTAX K-1 Mark II. It has everything I need in a camera , as well as being "Weather Resistant" and will the job I expect of it. I now have another huge learning curve challenge ahead of me, and am extremely excited to learn what the "beast" is capable of. So, yes, I totally agree with your advice in this video. Buy the camera you need, not the camera you want. The camera is only the photographers tool. Choose the best tool for the job!

The Bear Den I too have a k20d, and recently moved up to a pentax k3. These do not get the press of some of the big boys, but I am extremely satisfied with both of them. Like Mike says, you take and create the picture, not the camera, so do not get too wrapped up on specs! 😄
@TheBearDenPhotography6 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right John, Pentax is virtually an "unknown" in the bigger scheme of things. I too am very happy with their product, no complaints, and will continue to make use of the K20D. And I totally agree, specs are not all that important, especially to a beginner. However, having said that, the K1 specs were an important part of which model of the brand I chose, as they were what I require for my type of photography, and it will most likely be my last camera purchase, at least for a very long time. Have a great day!
@udoderunformige12506 жыл бұрын
I'm going to get a Pentax K-70. I think for me as a beginner in landscape photography it's a good choice. I decided to grab one after a quite long research. First, I started with the decision to buy a Sony Alpha a6000. While it's still a quite good camera in 2018, it lacks some features which I prefer: electronic level, more flexible screen, in-body shake reduction, weatherproof. Then the K-70 comes with some quite nice other features as well, which you don't see very often in this price category. In my country it costs about 1000 bucks in a kit with the 18-135 mm WR lens. According to the specs, it's definitely not the perfect camera for me. But it's closer than any other camera in this price category. The K-1 Mark II might be closer, but it's above my budget. The biggest problem I have with Pentax cameras: Stores which sell them are rare around here, so I have to travel quite a distance to try one.
@TheBearDenPhotography6 жыл бұрын
The K-70 is a great choice Udo der Unförmige . I have a friend who has one and she loves it! Yes, they are a difficult product to find, especially if it's not in a store that's not camera specific . Good luck with your new Pentax and most of all, have fun!
@udoderunformige12506 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'll undoubtedly have it. Well, most camera stores here don't have Pentax, but they have the other brands, so I tried some of them. Most of the mirrorless cameras are not my cup of tea, almost all of the entry level ones have no to just a slightly idea of a grip - though I really appreciate stuff like EVF and so on. The only one which gets this job at least somehow done is the a6000. So I decided to try DSLR, and it felt just better. Unfortunately, most entry level DSLRs are quite strapped down in terms of features, not only the "unnecessary" ones like "moar filters", but some quite comfortable for me like the articulating lcd screen or - which could be quite important - the 100% OVF. Most of them have 96% or so. I guess I could get used to it, but, you know... And only a few come with a 18-135 mm kit lens, which I'd really like, especially if I have to travel with as little gear as possible - and to figure out which focal length I like most. Oh, and do you know if there is a L-bracket designed specifically for the K-70? I've got an universal one for my compact camera and I could surely attach the K-70 to it as well, but...

Its tough to know what questions to ask at first so if you do the course, you'll have me as your guide feeding you just what you need, in sequence over 5 weeks. If I have a choice between, say, a 24mm f/2.8 and a 24mm f/1.4, I’ll get the lens with the wider aperture every time, all other factors being equal. That said, your advice to stop worrying about my kit is heaven-sent. Shutter speed, aperture, ISO, light: what do I want the photo to look like? Where do I stand to get it? How do I get what I want with my settings?

Hi long time viewer here, just want to mention that XT2 has been out for a few years now and it is very likely that fujifilm will announce XT3 around photokina in September this year. For me, choosing what camera is wright for me has turned out to be narrowed due to a birth injury. My left arm / hand did not develop normally so that I'm restricted with supporting a large heavy lens & can't use the left's hands fingers to manipulate the focusing rings. I'm in a camera group & have tried using other members full frame units with major tele glass on a few of our nature shoots & for me - not an option. For the past 1.5 yrs I'v been very happy shooting with the Panasonic Fz2500 bridge with 24~480 optical zoom, f2.8 ~ 4.5. It's limited by the 1 in sensor but it's something I have no problem handling. Since it has an internal zoom, I can reach & work the fine focus ring with my right hands small finger. This cameras usability is great with it's many function buttons. I'm learning to get the best shots I can from it.

Hi Mike, you hit the nail on the head. Many photographers are far too focused on gear or specs, and that was certainly the case for me when I first started with DSLR’s. Compared to the gear professionals used 10 or 15 years ago, an entry-level DSLR produces the same, possibly better image quality. My wife and I have invested in your 7 Block of Photography course and that has done more for our photography than ten times the amount of money invested in gear.
@MikeBrowne6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter. Delighted you got so much from my 7 Blocks course. It amazes me that so many photographers spend extraordinary amounts of money on cameras - but not a cent on learning how to use them. Best wishes... MIKE

I decided to create an Excel table in which I list features and specs I think could be quite handy. Then I rank them which specs are important and which ones are less important. Last, I give them points on how "full" the feature is on the camera, for example no weather sealing - 0 points, basic dust and waterproof - 5 points, fully waterproof like underwater cameras - 10 points. That's quite helpful.

Totally agree Mike. It's become very clear to me, as I watch the latest camera reviews, that camera technology (well the bits that matter most for still photos) reached a plateau a few years ago. A vast majority of the most famous, stunning, beautiful, amazing, memorable, images ever taken were taken on......wait for it..... "old cameras". My most recent camera purchase is a 13 year old Canon 5D. Just £250 & just 12Mp but it's an absolute joy to use and the images look beautiful. That was after a few months contemplating a Canon 5D mk4 (£3,000 !!). Great images are mostly about composition and interesting, thought-provoking, subject matter. Any modern camera phone, in the right hands, can produce that. 99.999999% of the time...it wasn't the camera's fault.
@MikeBrowne6 жыл бұрын
Bravo Go Humberto! . Agree 110%... MIKE
@CurvedSlightly6 жыл бұрын
Where I as I agree with you to some extent, to poke fun at people who buy the latest and greatest, I think is quite unfair. It really depends what you want to do with the camera. A £250 camera or a iPhone will be fine for snaps, you won't tell the difference between this and a £5000 camera. But you won't get good wildlife shots.The better you get at photography, the more you realise the limitations of the camera and not the photographer.
@leehargreaves74736 жыл бұрын
I don't see anyone poking fun at anyone buying the latest and greatest cameras. Wildlife & Sports are, I admit, a different matter, it's more about the gear than any other branch of photography I think. (My father is a Bird photographer and his gear cost more than my first house) but, even then it's mostly about the glass. I still stand by my comment , most of the greatest images (including Wildlife) were taken with old cameras (Pre Canon 7D, Pre Canon 1DX II). Yes you may stand more chance of getting the shot with 14 frames-per-second than 4 but the great Wildlife photographers managed it somehow. My real point is to do with composition and subject matter though. Great composition and interesting subject matter, taken on a phone camera, beats poor composition and boring subject matter taken on a Nikon D850. The actual image quality of some of Cartier-Bresson's most legendary images is quite poor, he just knocked it out of the park with composition and subject matter.

Do not forget that between both cameras, they is a huge upgrade in Megapixels (16 to 25), important in case you make big blow ups of your photos, which is my case and I did upgrade some years ago. Still need more megapixels, and will wait for the F-T5 as i make Posters as big as 60 x 120 cm and bigger for sale. Anyway, very happy with Fujifilm since I changed from Nikon DSLR, becausem Fuji is more practical and lighter with also a huge choice in lenses. And you are right, especially for the people starting in photography, the camera is not the most important. I am a professional since 1987, with Nikon F3T. I changed to Digital in 2006, but for some 7 years only with small cameras with small sensors (to learn) and I could make a big book of 256 pages with more than 1000 colour photographs, which sold out in a few years (6000 in total). And all pictures were JPGs except a few slides used in double pages and scanned professionally in printing mill. No raws used, i did not know then how to edit a raw, nor Photoshop. The book had a big succes. It was about Patagonia. Greetings from Patagonia/Chile.

Very interesting direct comparison and advice Mike - I migrated from Canon DSLRs to Fuji Mirrorless a few years ago and I bought the Xpro1 which I still love and use rather infrequently - I bought a new XT1 a couple of years ago and it’s been my go to camera ever since - it’s been so reliable and it produces excellent results especially when I’m using my 16mm Fuji lens or the little 27mm pancake I’ve no reason to upgrade really and whilst the XT3 is getting excellent reviews it’s not for me - I have however considered an upgrade to the XT2 as it has better video then the XT1 and the XT2 is a slightly better camera.. price wise it’s now available new at €850 (less grip which I don’t really need)... Fuji has pitched the XT3 at a very good price bracket - and it’s got excellent video qualities which I am very interested in - it’s a dilemma that I just can’t decide on 😳

Hi Mike.... Yes, I am planning to buy my first (second if you count the Canon SX220HS I have since 2006), for travel, landscape, street and portrait photography. I am a biker doing long, very long rides. I need a camera that I can carry in my riding jacket (priority no.1). I had narrowed down to the Sony RX100 Mark V when all my plans were thrown out of gear with the Sony RX100 Mark VI. I am real confused. I love the F1.8 to 2.8 on the V, the ND filter. But then I want the touchscreen and eye auto focus on the VI. If the VI release was delayed another one month, I may have bought the V. Canon/Fuji/Olympus ideas also welcome. $1200 OK. That being said, of course it wouldn't be wise to even consider either of these higher-end models, but you walking us through how you'd pick a new camera for yourself is much appreciated. And with all the various content put out there by other professional photographers, though I'm not proud to admit it, in all honesty I'm slightly influenced in my decision-making based on the fact that a lot of the photographers I follow have Canon gear. I know, I know. Brands aren't everything, especially when you're a beginner (furthermore, I only plan on doing this as a hobby). And in no way am I saying that Fujifilm is a generic brand or anything (far from it), but it is nice to see other equipment beyond Canon or Nikon being discussed.

Hi terebiomimasu. May i suggest something? In my experience "Entry Level" cameras are much harder to use than semi pro / pro ones because they have all kinds of stuff that tries to take over from you - and that often leaves someone starting out what they're doing wrong. When in fact they aren't doing anything wrong at all. Semi pro / pro cameras don't usually have these annoying functions and are available with very little use on them for a fraction of the price they were new. Probably less than a new entry level one. File quality will be better BUT the pics won't be any more creative, exciting etc until you've learned how to use the camera plus light, composition etc... Doesn't really matter what brand. If you like the sound of canon go with it because you'll be less likely to wonder if you made the 'right' choice... MIKE

Then I export to Capture One and go from there. I'm not interested in that "artsy" HDR look, just want a good exposure. My question: do you do any exposure blending? Is it worth it? I'm assuming there must be advantages to it out it wouldn't be around. Have you done any videos ok this? I'm long winded so I'll stop now. You are the best.
@MikeBrowne6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve - I'm famous for being long winded so no worries. Yes sometimes when the dynamic range of a very contrasty shot is outside the camera's dynamic range to capture I blend bracketed shots using HDR Photo Merge in Lightroom. Only do it if I have to though. Made a couple of videos where i do it but no vids specifically about it... Links below... MIKE Here's a situation where I do it @ 6:55 in this video: www.photographycourses.biz/videos/creative/lighting/how-to-pre-visualise-2 Example where eyes and cameras 'see' light differently. I wouldn't generally HDR a portrait but we've all got photos of someone silhouetted against a window. - PT2 includes the merge in Lr: www.photographycourses.biz/videos/technical/exposure/hdr-exposure-bracketing

Thanks glennskitchen. I completely believe you. my buddy tom Mackie switched from canon (can't remember what but it was a flagship camera) to a D850 because he reckoned it gave him an extra few inches of enlargement because the clarity and file quality is so good. More megapixels give me the leeway to crop into the picture more, basically extending my focal lenght with wild life or other telephoto photography. And the high Iso quality is important as well, when picking a camera.

Just some questions for you. I see people comparing mirrorless cameras versus DSLR's. Is this a valid comparison? After all they work differently on the inside; right? Shouldn't mirrorless be compared with mirrorless and DSLR with DSLR?
@MikeBrowne6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeffrey. In my experience a camera is a camera and these days they all do a great job so photographically there's not much to compare regardless of how they work inside. I get great images from my little Fujis and from my DSLR, only time I use the DSLR these days is when shooting fast action with a long lens because in my experience the AF is faster and more accurate, or when I want an f2.8 aperture because I only have pro lenses for the Nikon. Have a look at the gallery linked below. Some are taken on the Mirrorless and some on the DSLR and there's no difference really... MIKE :-) www.photographycourses.biz/lanzarote-gallery

Most enlightening Mike as usual - super. I sold my XT2 despite what I thought was a much more solid camera mechanically and retro looking than my beloved Nikon D610. The D610 has triumphed for me due to my familiarity with its controls and me being in better control of key photographic parameters plus I have a fortune of lens mustered for the Nikon. I did feel sorry to sell the Xt2. I do feel closer to the job with the Nikon if you catch my drift.

Full Frame vs Crop Sensor f-stop of the lens Burst mode and buffer size megapixels for cropping in post all these impact the image and can limit the final image you want. i think the advice of its being your own skills and knowledge preventing the pictures is good for beginners but once you know you want a fast shutter because its sports or you want to freeze the frame and you want to blur the background for added bokeh, then camera does matter and lens choice also does matter. Its like, will a 10,000 pound new car get you to seaside any better than a 100,000 pound car. You will both get there, the expensive car might do it with you being less tired as a result or the gears and engine may take some of the work out of it for you but the end results is your both at the seaside and that applies to photography.

Really interesting Mike, I have just decided to upgrade as I have had my Nikon D300 and D300s cameras for quite some time now, I've looked at the Fuji XT2 but have decided on the Nikon D500. My reason for making that choice is for the same reasons you have described, it suits me better to have the D500 and I am used to Nikon. I shoot a lot of event photography and I don't like using flash. However, in most situations there is no choice because most events wont allow the use of flash so the superb high ISO on the D500 is perfect for me. I also seem to be doing a whole lot more commercial stuff, ie; restaurant and bar photography because people have seen my previous images taken for websites and like them. Again the D500 suits my needs. Watching your video confirmed that I have been applying the correct thought process before making an expensive purchase and for that I thank you.

I'm using the X-T2 for about one and a half year now and it's really a great camera. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. Maybe you can do a video about sharpening the X-T2 RAWs because there is an issue in Lightroom that creates "wormlike artefacts" when sharpening those RAWs there. For now I changed my workflow and use the NIK Collection "RAW PreSharpener" when editing my pix in Photoshop. That works really great but maybe you as a professional can find a better and easier way. Take care and keep up the great work.
@MikeBrowne6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael . I saw the 'wormy' thing but it's so small that you have to be in at 100% before it's noticeable and at that size viewing distance is a long way back so still not that noticeable to my eye. As time goes by I may have further insight.... MIKE

Brilliant Mike and a little timely as I have just bought a used Mirrorless with APS-C sensor, (with kit lens), same as my DSLR but with 18mega pixels as opposed to 12 on DSLR. I will now have to do a comparison but hope DSLR lens will 'win' due to a better lens? My only upgrade query is would I benefit from a full frame sensor camera, not sure as the cost would be considerable. Just out of interest do you still use your DSLR at all now? Keep up the good work.
@MikeBrowne6 жыл бұрын
Hi Warren. Thank you. To answer your questions ... "Would I benefit from a full frame sensor camera?" Probably not unless you need more pixels for heavy cropping / enlargement or maybe need better high ISO performance. "Do you still use your DSLR at all now?" Yes from time to time when the situation is better suited to DSLR. Shooting northern lights landscapes there's almost no available light and the EVF on the Fuji is too dark to see the composition (even in full bright DSLR mode) but the optical one on Nikon can. Use it when shooting weddings and capturing emotional moments because the AF is more accurate and faster. Most commercial shoots because the RAW files are just a bit more robust if I need to kick them hard in post to fulfill a client brief. Best wishes... MIKE :-)

As always Mike you hit it on the heed (Scottish).... I spent as you know, a long time deciding the move from Nikon full frame to XT-2 and it took a long time. When the decision was made to move, the time came to compare the XT-1 to the XT-2 and because I have big hands, lack patience, small brain, I want for the XT-2. I still miss my big dslr but sense had to prevail as I was getting old and tired lugging heavy gear about doing landscapes. Your lucky you still have the D600 for your commercial stuff so you have the best of both worlds and anyway... you're getting so famous you'll be able to get folk to lug your gear about for you!!! I've never used one Daniel. TBH I just hate getting a new camera. I'm very non-techie and it drives me nuts figuring out where they've moved everything and the often ridiculous additional features that have been added. Guess my motto is if it aint broke I won't try to fix it. That said the XT2 is getting kinda beaten uo now so may have to take a deep breath and look at a new one.. ... MIKE🙏😆
@danielschmaderer2 жыл бұрын
@@MikeBrowne aww that’s too bad. It’s honestly a brilliant camera and you’ve proved that for using it as long as you have. That being said, lucky the X-T4 isn’t too much different than the X-T2. Yeah it has a few more megapixels, but that’s not going to drastically do much. Switching from photo to video is on a dedicated photo/video switch which is really nice for what you do when you want to show your viewers what you’re seeing. The in body stabilization is nice, but I know it’s not a must for everyone. The one thing that does drive some people mad about the camera is the screen. It’s the kind that flips out to the side. It doesn’t bother me, but some of the people I know can’t stand it. Something to keep in mind. At the end of the day, it’s about the person behind the camera, not the camera itself as I’ve learned from you. Sure the tech can help in situations, but it’s not a make or break issue.

I like and respect your approach as a professional photographer. The gear, certainly, is only one part of the equation. Skilled photographers can use older technology to be as good as newer technology because of their proficiency. However, I would say current technology can make a less skilled photographer much better. As an example, in-body image stabilization (IBIS) or in the lens, can bring about a majority of shots without blurring. Professional photographers, of course, would know how to dial in the shutter speed to have similar results. Current technology for auto focusing, faster frame shots, IBIS etc. all make the chances for the amateur's photos to have a better percentage of usable shots. Love Fuji but maybe try the XH1 in addition to the Sony a7 III as the best camera solutions to date? I own the Panasonic G9, which I love, but maybe not in the same league. Great to realize great photos are made, first by the photographers own imagination, and only secondarily by the camera systems utilized.
@MikeBrowne6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steven. Yes I agree with what you said, High ISOs, IS and AF are indeed a blessing! And some of the other tech is a help too. When we look at the work of the greats from 30 plus years ago though, it makes us realise that the fundamental most vital part of the camera is a few inches behind the viewfinder. ... MIKE

For many the full frame vs APSC is a question of status or prestige, even if they don't admit that to themselves. I have a Nikon D610 (full frame) and a Nikon D7200 and Fuji XT20 (crop). In good light and normal shooting situations, I agree, no real world difference. But in low light, the D610 with fast lens catches focus and gives usable images where the crop sensors struggle. That comes at a price, the D610 with FF 24-70 weighs about 3 times, compared with the XT20 and 18-55. For out and about, I prefer the small Fuji. For studio or paid work, I prefer the D610. Also found a brilliant Metz flash for the Fuji, small and portable, helps in low light.
