You don't loose a cent till you sell. Like you say it's all information till then. Just buy and hold. Only sell when the market is doing well. When it crashes it's time to take a job and buy more. That's when there are bargains to be had.

@@Clarks-Adventure But surely getting a job in a recession is really tough due to competition and the wages getting driven down? Why not work during the boom years when there are way more opportunities and rates are better? Both approaches are valid, I think doing it during recession is just making it harder on yourself. I remember how scarce work was during the 2007/2008 crash and how work just disappeared over night.

Great video. I love that you encourage others to invest. Here's a little on what we did, diversified.- Stocks, ok return. Rentals, like you said its a second job but a good return. The third was raw land, and did the best. The key to buying raw land is: 1) buy near a mid-size town 2) buy on the next undeveloped interstate exit going out of town; not the first undeveloped exit (Developers are already jacking prices). 3) buy over 5 acres and register as managed forestry to avoid taxes (this varies from county to county). And using your 30yr model, $2000/acre, 15 acre plot 1/4 mile from the exit valued at $30K back 20yrs ago sells for @ $68,000/acre valued now at $1.02M The nice thing managed forestry taxes are about $40/yr and nothing to the land to maintain. This is not a special situation. No cities grow in; they all grow out and sprawl; most, even the modest expand to the rate of one exit/10yr and they almost always pay 50-100x for the property near the interstate ramp. There are some things that can be done to hedge this like following your city's growth, schools, etc. Here's some remarkable validation for you: Have you ever wondered why those who run for Sewer Commissioner will pay 10X in campaigning than the position pays annually? Sewer is the only utility that requires municipal funds to install. Anyone can install power, water, cable and septic. But a neighborhood or large business requires municipal sewage services. The next exit (the one I told you to stay away from) is the one that just got sewer funding approval. The real estate sells first, then announcement is made. Ok.....Ive rambled. Thanks for all you guys do. My wife and I will be on the water in 16 more months! Cheers

I personally consider this form of "money stashing" an option for people who have a priority to stash money (for one reason or another). If your priorities lie elsewhere you probably invest where are you priorities (for some people it is family, for some people it is their own business, for some it is travelling, for others it is a plastic surgery, for some a home or a farm or a boat...). I think one should handle money/time/effort based on what their priorities and aspirations require at the particular time in space. I might be wrong, of course - we live in a universe where we don't really understand what's what and why (unless you are a religious-dependant and you know all the answers are written in the book of your chosen religion)...so quite frankly, anything is a posibility. The concept that I am refering to is in economy known as 'time value of money' - there are mathematical formulas that one can use to establish what is their best return on their investment (this includes time and effort as well). So once you know what is your goal, then you can narrow it down and start working with less information/smaller 'information pool' that is more relevant to you achieving your goal and that way it becomes more manageable/clearer/simpler to read the streams of data that are all aruond us at all time. I just felt that this might be a useful bit of info for somepeople (as there are many of us who tend to fall for the illusion of simplification - that everything is either/or, that everything is "black and white"...there's an entire spectrum of how can one succeed - investing into stock market is one of the numerous ways and it just might not be for you at all or it might be for you partially or it might be for you fully (it is importand for one to know and understand the more broader details/laws/rules/patterns/stories that apply to their chosen path). However it is a good video, I am not saying anything negative here...just adding to the discussion ;)

I heard this explained to me in high school economics class, and I wish I would have followed this advice. If I would have started and fully funded my IRA then, I would be able to cruise now instead of waiting another three years. Fully funded Roth(which is what I have now) is $5500 per year. In addition to that I put another ten percent of my gross into good growth stock mutual funds with a fifteen year average return of over sixteen percent per year. I build my own spreadsheet and I did not like what I saw, because I saw what my net worth would have been. Instead I spend it foolishly on stuff that I do not have anymore, and I did not need.

It helps to know (or guesstimate) what stocks offers the best possibility for a quicker return, rather than buying a stock at a high point for example. Many stocks have their ups and downs though out the year as they need to give a few financial reports during the year. For ex uber was meant to open today in the market at 45 dollars but went straight down as the company is loosing money, their employees are on strike and the market in general is down. . Just a thought.
@brentshuffler12345 жыл бұрын
ONE TIP IS TO AVOID i.P.O.s, START-UPs, AND ANY COMPANY THAT IS not profitable (E.G., UBER AND LYFT). You have so many profitable, successful, growing, and dividend-paying companies available to choose locally and in the world; you do not have to worry about the many that are doubtful, highly risky, new and unproven, etc.

folks struggle with "delayed gratification". Seems I know a lot of people with knowledge of the benefits of compound returns, but would rather spend that dollar on tasty, hot french fries, than save it, even if they could get huge, unreasonable returns, like 20 or 40%. Btw, I own a batch of preferred stocks that pay around an 8% yield. One example is TWOpB. Had it for years now, bought it during one of the occasional panics. So the yield at my purchase price is 9%. Anyway, this video will help folks who are receptive to it, but will pass right over most folks heads'.

How about selling puts for lower risk and still be long? TECL was at $167.45 at time of trade. For instance yesterday I just SOLD to open 14 PUT of TECL at $3.3 for 160 strike and expiration of 7/19 so about 2 weeks. This ties up $224k for 2 weeks for $4,620 or 2% in 2 weeks. Like the concept. You make the 2% next day since 1 day settle. What is the negative? You are PUT the stock at 160 if under 160 on 7/19. Your break even is 160-3.30=$156.70. If you want to play long but buy cheaper if it falls this may be good but you. Either way you make the 2%. If you would have bought you might have made more. It may be at $180 at 7/19 and you only make 2% for lower risk. Oh well. I just sold 1368 TECL at $168 making a small profit of 4% after holding a few months so love the 3x TECH EFT long but wanted to find a way to lower risk. Rolling forward 2% every few weeks can be VERY profitable. This works well in choppy markets. TECL has been up 100% YTD and has a huge track record but ti can be volatile since it is a 3x ETF but a safer 24%+ a year meets my goals at lower risk. Your have been sailing for 20 years so I am sure you know all this. Socking it away is likely best for most but being active can pay off for some.

Hard to play options when you are out sailing. I chose another way. I guess I'm too lazy to do do all that. I looked into it in the 90s. But then communication was not good enough to trade outside the US.

@@Clarks-Adventure likely best. Don't change what is working so well! Happy sailing. Yeah stocks or ETFs can be a daily, weekly, or even yearly thing. Options you really should review daily. Since I am at the computer all day long it is no issue for me.

Those 30 years graphs examples are calculated including compound interest?
@Clarks-Adventure5 жыл бұрын
The 2.5% APR we used is what a bank gives after compounding. Since we used that number, in essence, yes this is compound interest. effective interest rate.

Thanks Gordon. Sorry but I just don't know. I hope someone else chimes in. I do know some Europeans who invest in the US stock market even though they have to.pay US income tax on the money. One is a major economist. I imagine they hide the investments from their home governments so they don't have to pay double tax and have some hidden assets if necessary. I've never done this kind of thing so I don't really know what to advise.

I've been asked to do a speaking tour starting in Kenya. Don't know if it will happen. But, it got me thinking of that area. Tough to invest my way. Probably local micro loans, what we call hard money lending. Or the US stock market. Makes it easier to move your cash out if you ever want to travel.

What are your thoughts on Bitcoin and Ethereum?
@Clarks-Adventure4 жыл бұрын
I was involved in a group that was developing an asic chip for mining so I researched it a lot. I love the idea of this as a currency. Wish it didn't burn so much power but that will eventually be over. I think it's the future but don't know what form will prove popular. But I just don't find it has enough backing for my comfort as an investment. It could turn out like tulip bulbs. I like owning part of businesses who are actively seeking profit. Also funding the market has me actually helping the economy. Just my preference. As I say in one of my videos it's what I know. I also don't do art or antiques but they can work too.
@free2rhyme2144 жыл бұрын
@@Clarks-Adventure Thanks for sharing. You're right, PoW chains like Bitcoin will use renewable energy to mine or end up on proof of stake based chains as pegs to scale Bitcoin to more users. Personally I don't see crypto assets as tulip bulbs, I see them as an emerging asset class that will change traditional finance. Crypto will have a similar impact like the businesses you fund in due time. Also I employ a similar strategy as you, but I focus on different crypto assets instead of businesses. After all usually you have to be an accredited investor to fund businesses but not for smaller amounts within SEC guidelines. You might find this read interesting as food for thought.
