The perspective that is missing here is that the special food he ate at the restaurant which he ranked as cheap and low quality was far, far, far, superior to anything regular North Koreans would ever get to eat. Just the fact that there was meat there put it off the charts. Basically for $10, Drew experienced the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, North Korean style.

I was wondering that myself when he asked if the restaurant was for the local people too or if it was a "Stage" Restaurant for the tourists ONLY. It's surprising and yet not surprising at all. Even though Drew didn't care much for the food besides the handmade cold noodles it's still the type of food the average North Korean citizen will not get to enjoy 😞. Like you said it's basically the rich and famous lifestyle North Korean style. I'll tell you what though even if it was an all expense paid trip to North Korea I STILL wouldn't go there. I would never be able to relax there at all never knowing if I'm going to do something "wrong" according to them 😥.
@BSGSV

@@austinbevis4266 unfortunately we are not allowed to travel to any place without accomplished by a tour guide so it’s difficult for us to discover the ‘true side’ of the country behind the curtain. I still remember one night our tour guide bring us to a local pub and share a bit of his feeling about the country. He said he’d like to travel and see the world more if he had a chance but it’s nearly impossible for him to do so, he is not even allowed to travel freely within the country. And all the information they have been receiving are given by the government while they have no internet and other sources to validate it. So if the Kim’s said they are richer and living in a better situation than the ppl in the south they can only believe so. Ofcouse he show 200% believing in what the govern told him but I think he have doubt in some area ( just my assumption. Not exactly what he told us). So to conclude I think we can only see the ‘true DPRK’ while one day there will be a more open and liberated government operating the country

North Korea’s GDP per capita is $1,300 USD per year. Divide by 12 months is $108.33 per month. Divide by 30 days is $3.61 per day. You would have to work about 3 days to get $10, and that’s 24/7 work, so let’s say they worked for 12 hours a day. That would be almost a week worth of work to get $10.

How did you manage to register and participate to the Marathon? Was it already part or an option of your tour? What period of the year it was? If I ever manage to visit I would definitively want to do that since I am a Marathon Runner and would be a crazy experience to do!

Thank you Drew for that video. I've also been on this tour but with a round trip to the DMZ and the east coast. You've experienced exactly the same I did....the strange faces of the people and weird behaviors. But an once in a lifetime experience.
