The perspective that is missing here is that the special food he ate at the restaurant which he ranked as cheap and low quality was far, far, far, superior to anything regular North Koreans would ever get to eat. For those of you who don't know who Otto Warmbier is, He was an American who visited north Korea. He stole a propaganda poster in his hotel, and he got a 15-year jail sentence with hard labor. Shortly after his 15-year sentencing, Otto suffered a severe neurological injury from an unknown cause and fell into a coma, which lasted until his death.R.I.P Otto Warmbier

I went to run the full marathon in the same year, though i was on a different, longer, tour with Koryo (we were apparently on the same flight to Pyongyang as my group is seen at the check-in in Beijing). I agree with what you said and it was a truly surreal experience. Just a small correction. A few months later US citizens were not banned to enter by the DPRK, but they were prohibited to travel to DPRK after US decision.

North Korea’s GDP per capita is $1,300 USD per year. Divide by 12 months is $108.33 per month. Divide by 30 days is $3.61 per day. You would have to work about 3 days to get $10, and that’s 24/7 work, so let’s say they worked for 12 hours a day. That would be almost a week worth of work to get $10.
