WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT OUR FODDER SHORTAGE?!

In todays video we look to solve what can we do about our fodder shortage. So we prepare our winter wheat ground that we harvested recently for whoelcrop and we sow Gorilla rape which is a brassica crop which we can graze over the winter months so some of our cattle can graze this over the winter.

Ye should pick up a cheap zero grazer for the cover crops and grass on out farms in the back end of the year . Saves opening the pit early

There's a place on every farm for a small tractor. We have a 265 with no glass or lights, it does all the spraying, fertilizer and topping. We use the free version of fieldbee on the phone for it as can't be arsed switching the GPS from machine to machine. It's not massive accurate but it's way better than hoping and praying to be on the right track.

Would growing a acre of comfrey help out with nitrogen ? You could double chop it and put it in your slurry .The old chaps put it in a hessian bags in the waterbutt for the veg plots and still had to water it down more as its full of N .

Sand needs to be dry and work away in handy batches as the sand will sink to the bottom first! Not in love with a single disk spreader as they tend to spread uneven!

Ha ha you talk of a sow rate of Kg per acre and I sow green manures at oz per square yards on my allotment. I am growing mustard at the moment came up in less than a week.

clover likes low wet ground. when we milked 85 cows use to pasture dry cows/pregnant heifers in meadows seeded red/white clover mixed with timothy in low ground right & your right any pasture acreage helps. i cut meadow hay all day today its very very dry even down in cattails the reed canary grass acreage is 7ft tall ive got 19 acreas of that stuff to roll up this week somethings f'ed up with my case every time push the clutch in smoke pouring out of bellhousing

We sell silage and hay to have cash flow during the summer and we had planned on having more grass to put in the pit but how the year played out with poor growth from the dry spell so we only had the one field.

@@FARMERPHIL3690 if you have to sell bales for cashflow it does not say much for the profitability of your beef business especially this year of record beef prices . good beef men are paying record prices for stores which is a sign of profit . your poor growth and having to eat ground destined for second cut is due to not spreading enough chemical fertiliser. you admitted that when beginning to mow your second cut . sorry to be so blunt but reducing bagged fert too much will have serious knockon effects down the line if you dont reduce stocking rate

Would it not be easier and cheaper to get it direct drilled? Expensive seed and lack of moisture made me think it might be easier? Did you have to calibrate the spinner? Are you feeding any pumpkins to the cows?

We don’t have a direct drill so hiring someone to do the job would’ve made it more costly. The calibration of the spinner was guessing how much was coming out😂 The cattle won’t eat the pumpkins but the pigs love them

Just give these lads a few months till the rape is up. It only cost them the seed and a few loads of slurry and roll it in. The 35 would run on the smell of the diesel so I won't count that operation as much of a cost. They will have good feed for light weanlings during the winter to keep them outside.
