Torrential rains have caused widespread flooding across the United Arab Emirates, dumping more than a year-and-a-half's worth of rain in just a few hours. Associate Professor Roslyn Prinsley, head of disaster solutions at the Australian National University's Institute for Climate, Energy and Disaster Solutions, tells CNA's Asia First what she believes was the main factor behind the historic downpour.

Tokyo has a very extensive drainage system because it is a city prone to flooding and gets a lot of rain each year. It has huge underground tunnels that absorb the water which can then be redirected out to sea. Maybe Dubai needs to look into installing a similar system in case of events like this.

@@Kanto33 dubai is a dessert city, drains would be blocked with sand in matter of days,thats what i heard..however probably they could of engineered an under ground drainage system or temporary retention areas just in case..just like tokyo.

@@masterroshi8812 They do have rains at least once or twice a year. Though still it doesn't mean that they shouldn't put a proper drainage system because even before, when it rains a little, it floods. Now, it's just worse.

Dubai just don't have city-required drainage system because they believe they are forever a dessert city, that kind of rain is normal in any tropical countries. Also most of their buildings and roads are in non-elevated grounds, now they have to rethink this building strategy if they want to be relevant for the next decade. They are three or four rainstorms away from major economic nghtmare.

Plenty of drainage everywhere in Europe, yet floods still happen here... The problem is too much concrete everywhere, with sand which is the main soil there the water would quickly infiltrate into the ground. And building on safe areas only is important too...

we do have adequate system fit to our range of rainfall , please google search (Dubai Municipality completes 90% of Deep Tunnel Drainage Project), but the storm was unprecedented in it scale.

Interesting. In Australia, on the west coast, a few of the northern suburbs were hit with 100ml of rain in under ONE hour. Yes, 1 hour!! And that was after the longest drought in 149 years. It caused much flooding and ceilings to collapes in homes and a shopping mall. Strange that both events happen within almost the same period of a week and that both locations were hit with "100 ml". Oh... and the most bizarre thing, with the event in Australia, is that the weather bureau weren't predicting ANY rain, at all. They admitted that it caught them off guard, that they completey missed it. In all my years I have never ever heard them say something like that. Normally they are roughly 98% accurate. There is definitely something strange going on with the weather right now. In Perth Australia we're still experiencing summer weather. We're in the middle of Autumn here. And the summer weather (heat waves) started early last year, in late October. So we've actually had 7 months of summer so far. It's just insane.

Scientists have been warning for 50 years that man made climate change will cause more extreme weather events, yet the oil lobby did everything to stop change. The warmer the earth gets, the more water vapour the earth can store, leading to longer and more intense drougths, until all that water is released at once, causing more intense floodings that the dry soil cannot absorb. Dubai is heavily urbanised with little green space to absorb rain water, combined with its inadequate storm water drainage system. But at least they have some cool skyscrapers over there.

@@user-eo1vg6oc3v High-rise building's foundations almost always rest on piles that are driven into solid bedrock. Due to their depth, they are usually unaffected by rain water.

I live there for almost 8 years. There's virtually no central drainage or sewage system there. All building waste go to individual underground sewage tanks and every night trucks will come to empty those tanks. If it rains streets WILL flood even if it's just a little bit.

Yeah they could use the Tokyo drainage system which has huge underground caves and tunnels that capture the rain. Then they could pump it back into other facilities.

Dry soil cannot absorb water, that is the problem. Huge amounts of rain after a drought are for the most part useless, that's why weather extremes caused by climate change are a big problem. You need steady rain for the soil to store it, but the more extreme the climate becomes, the less steady rainfall you have

yes I was thinking the same thing. if you could build reservoirs, to collect and distribute water slowly into the environment. that could transform the desert into a garden.

I have lived in the deserts of Arizona and every summer monsoon rains drench the land. Since in the desert the soil is baked hard drainage is poor even in the cities which create flooding. After the rain it is still super hot that he humidity would be like 1000%

Nonsense. Look at global weather right now, follow the wind patterns and cloud covers on satellite....gives you an interesting picture. I often check satellite images of cloud cover coming through our region in South Africa, It's fascinating and helps me to prepare and be safe. Patterns change depending on temperatures etc. cloud seeding is a thing, not in this case. The water in Dubai is so needed. Pump and save it. Buildings and cars can be replaced. I hope nobody got hurt. Goodwill to all.

"Dubai artificialy creating rainstorms with electricity and drones"" and more. Two year old and there were warnings of specialists but people in power do not like warnings..

Not simply the cloud seeding nor climate change. Let's not forget, that when those man-made and artificial islands (to build luxury real estate), were initiated years ago, billions of tons of sands were dumped along Dubai's coastlines, Inevitably, these coastlines' depth and the maritime resources around them were significantly altered or destroyed. Nature has its own way of claiming its own. When will nations learn that when we abuse or destroy the environment and Mother Nature, it only takes some time before it gets back to revenge. We never seem to learn such crucial lessons.

A neighboring Country could have done the weather modification, to cause destruction... From which direction does the wind travel normally? West to east or East to west? Good Morning Britain reported they flew 7 cloud seeding flights on this storm the 2 days prior. They live in the desert they need all the water they can get a storm system is a golden opportunity to extract more water like they wouldn't have seeded it

Is cloud seeding that effective? I don't think so. No amount of normal cloud seeding can do that amount of rainfall within hours. It will take a humongous amount of salt and other mixtures to do that.

@@muckle8 It really looks impossible for cloud seeding to affect UAE, Oman, and other areas nearby at the same time. That's a LARGE area. Cloud seeding usually covers only the size of a province. Plus, no amount of salt can bring so much precipitation if there's not enough vapor to begin with in the air.

UAE send us warning sms if the weather is really bad like if it would cause flood but unfortunately we didn't receive that alarm message that day although we were informed that rain is expected on those days through social media, cloud seeding or not but this is way beyond a normal rainfall that happens in middle east adding the harsh wind blows and poor drainage system, it's really saddening that unprecedented weather was not detected by the weather radar

A Wadi (kind of like a canyon) is a natural drainage system in the desert... very common actually. They only carry water once in a blue moon but when they do you don't want to be inside the Wadi.

Flash floods occur in the desert once in a while. Dubai is good to look at but its built in a way without adhering to proper accepted norms of city construction. No proper sewage or drainage. The birj khalifa sewage has to be emptied each day by bowsers of its sewage. An illusion in the desert.

The problem is: The city planner had forgotten or ignore the importance of drainage.
