It's kind of amazing that hens make it perfect for their lil'ones to make it. God's work just blows me away!

Fantastic informative video. I think I'm about ready to give up on incubation. Bought a second hand still air incubator, set up, day 3 the turning motor failed so had to manually turn. All chick failed. Bought a new motor, new arm, new thermometer. Bought 12 eggs from a reputable breeder, 11 fertile. Candled at day 7, fine. Day 14 and day 18. Had two quitters and one I wasn't sure about, but expecting 8 to hatch. Day 20 first pipped. Day 21 second pipped and both hatched. To me they were good hatches. Now day 22 nothing from the other eggs. I removed the chick's today. Do I candle? I hate the thought I'm responsible for the death of 6 chicks!😢 As it's a still air incubator is it still worth getting a hydrometer? Sorry for all of the questions, I'm at my wits end. It's a Brinsea polyhatch incubator and allegedly good. Any help would be welcome.❤

Wow. So informative. I have a question does the heat rises situation cause too much fluctuations? Like are the ones on top getting too hot and the lower ones not hot enough?

I’m moving my internal thermometer around to each corner and observing that today. I do worry that it’s inconsistently heating

Something else I found with cheap temperature controllers that give a wrong reading, even if you find the correct difference and adjust so the real temperature is where you want it, it will gradually change over a few months.
@nathen7330 Жыл бұрын
I have two incubators and both of the thermostats are off. I have to set them to another temperature to achieve 99-103. Find a thermometer you trust. One cheap incubator cooked some eggs at 108 so I made my my own out of an ice chest and pid temperature controller

What you said about humidity levels causing shrink wraps isn’t true. Else dry hatches would never hatch. Also, broody hens don’t spray their eggs with water. And they don’t release anymore “sweat” to the chicks in the last three days.

I'm trying to figure out where things are going wrong for me. My first batch I put on 9 eggs. At the end only 4 hatched. I had a few quitters and a few that never pipped. So I tried again. 11 eggs. This time I had all kinds of issues with humidity. Too low too high. I struggled to keep it right. We got 3 days left and 5 eggs in still. And I hoping they hatch. I don't think I'll be trying to hatch my own chicks again.
@cabincreekhomestead761 Жыл бұрын
That’s so discouraging, I’m sure. Sometimes there’s a genetic component that causes these problems, but you are also at the mercy of temperature and humidity. Have you got an extra hydrometer? My big incubator was notorious for being several degrees too cold and I had to manually adjust it constantly. I’m sorry it’s been a rough go!

I have 3 week old baby chicks. When can u tKe the heat lamp off? Thank u in advance
@cabincreekhomestead7619 ай бұрын
I like to wait til they are full of feathers!!! 6 weeks old is a good goal, just keep in mind that some breeds are more cold tolerant/heat tolerant, so do your research. Silkies tend to be a little sensitive, as well as any type of frizzle.

Did you end up returning the incubator from tractor supply? What was the result on your second try?
@cabincreekhomestead7618 ай бұрын
I’ve played around with it a lot, and I’ve come to the conclusion that since I don’t know how to troubleshoot some hotspots, it’s just not worth it for me to hatch expensive eggs in. When I have some more eggs that I don’t feel so emotionally invested in, I might try it again. But right now it’s sitting on a shelf and I’m not Wasting my time with it. I’ve seen some videos where people can manually go in and fix those hotspots, but the last time I checked, I had a spot that was 106°, it absolutely cooked most of the eggs in there

I have just completed my first hatch 6 chicks from 10 eggs , the incubator was run for a week without eggs I found that the temp sensor was not close enough to the eggs , I also insulated the incubator , added a second temp/humidity sensor , I also have a hand held temp gun just for backup ,. Humidity ran 50-55 and 65-70 Next batch going in on Wednesday

@@cabincreekhomestead761 my eggs were a combination of Arucana and silkie, they got shipped to upstate NY and I have a cross beaked Americana hen who kept finding ways to unplug the incubator no matter where I put her (I think she saw the eggs and she wanted them). So this year I will do one or two sets and Izzy will ride shotgun with me or be outside in the flight because it will be spring and summer not fall.
