Apple is REAL BAD with this. And if you bring it in for a warranty repair they will do everything in their power to deny the repair and make you buy a new one. (They will claim water damage, when you live in a high humidity area which is bad enough to make the sensor say water damage)

I worked in corporate IT myself. Thankfully I had a say in purchasing of computers. I would purchase them with the intent of making them last 5 years and would spec them out as such (good enough processor, ram, and hard drive - later SSD's). This would cost about 10-15% more in the short term, but would save about 45-50% in the long term. Other folks in other divisions would buy the cheapest specs they could get away with and had a turn around of 3 years at most (never even considered using SSD's cause HDD's were cheaper. and they would cheap out on the CPU as well going with Celeron processor to do pro grade work ). They were doing this on purpose telling everyone they were saving money. But then they had to have extra staff just so they could swap out machines more often. the cheaper ones also required more repair and support because they were so cheap. The other thing about the cheap computers was that they were slower and actually cost more in user time to do the work (they were underpowered and slow for the work that had to be done.) When the time came around to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 non of the cheaper computers could be upgraded without upgrading the hardware with Ram and SSD's, where the computers I had purchased were upgraded to Win 7 no issues Eventually the company consolidated the IT support (after a whole bunch of whining and bitching about it) They went with my direction after they saw how much more expensive in the long run the cheaper computers were. BTW after we were done with the computer, we would sell them at auction to recoup some of the costs. the cheaper computers could not be sold because no one wanted those pieces of junk. I know a few people who would buy them up in lots, and refurb them giving them a new life after we were done with them and making some extra coin doing so. We primarily used Dell and HP business class computers.

Corporate IT person here as well. I'm insanely angry at how things are moving in our field. I work in broadcasting and it used to be we'd hit a pawn shop, pick up.. 6-7 dell towers, slap in the official licensed OS and software for our systems and we're GREAT, but now? Oh my god. No. We have a SINGLE virtual array matrix running 12 HIGH PRIORITY machines. And the worst part. The BACKUPS are on the sAME DAMN HUB. It makes NO sense. We had issues with the network connection and drives on the hub and the hell happened? OBVIOUS PROBLEMS. Also they're all on fucking virtual machines. The system clock LAGS. It can't keep the CPU clock synced to GPS. It's NOT HARDWARE. I hate this shit

@@EspressosWork Hey I am a big fan of using virtual machine servers and the proper uses of them. I am retired now (4 years ago now) We used virtual machine arrays to run our servers, but we used several arrays and made sure we only put as many servers on an array that it could support. We had our backups on separate and separately located backup arrays with redundant tape and disk to tape backups. We had good network people who set things up and maintained then the right way. It sounds like your company leadership is trying to cheap this one out. I am sorry you have to deal with that crap, And it is crap. A big thing they forget is that if they cheap out and lose productivity, that costs more than the savings from cheaping out. The managers are chasing the low cost bugaboo. Until your leadership understands the true cost of doing this they are lost.

I have a story about repair manuals: I bought an old radio/cassette player from the 80's on eBay recently, and found a manual for it online. That manual tells you the exact steps for disassembly, tells you where all the screws are and how to get them out properly, and the specifications for -- check this: the pinch roller pressure, torque, azimuth; basically everything you need. Oh, and it also lists all the tape models for testing and some of the tools you need. As someone born in the 2000's I've never seen ANY manual that's like this, and I love this old thing already. It's so cool to have documentation that just tells you "go fix it yourself, heres some info to make you less likely to screw up," rather than "hey, here's the phone number to call for someone to tell you to buy more of our stuff, idiot". Makes me like my product and the company more this way.
@boburanus698 күн бұрын
It's cool. There's a few orders of magnitude of miniaturization between a cassette player from the 80s and any modern device. It's not really a matter of 'you need manuals' but more of a 'you need eyesight and manual dexterity capable of working on micro electronics. Things you need a microscope to even begin to see. Imagine science class all over again, looking at stuff on a slide magnified. Cept you're working on an iphone 11 with board separation and it could be one of 30 solder joints and you just cleared your afternoon so you can painstakingly check each one with a multi meter. I'm all for people working on their own stuff, but there comes a point when the size of the components, the ability to do the work, is not there for 98% of people who would actually try. Spend $1000 on a device, break it taking it apart, do irreversible damage to components 'DIY Value' and then take it to a shop where someone gives you a look and quotes you way too much money to fix it.
@TheCuteZombie7 күн бұрын
@@boburanus69 That is nonsense and you know it. By your logic, desktop computers are impossible to exist nowadays, since they are made of microelectronics. Not to mention there still is many repair shops for smartphones. No one is talking about making the electronics from scratch, your analogy is like saying tha old manual is useless bcause common people don't have the machinery to made plastic molding. Everything nowadays is modular, many times being posssible to take a piece from a broken model and reusing it. Not to mention there are many DIY that can indeed do what you mention and would love to work on the hardware and software.
@boburanus697 күн бұрын
@@TheCuteZombie Nope. There is such a thing as a robotic production assembly line, mostly automated, that produces many of the micro electronics and component assemblies that are then hand assembled by people, who inspect and QC them. What people like Louis Rossman fail to understand and quite often take for complete granted... it takes a level of skill and willingness to do your own work to do component level repair. Can you do it? Can you teach yourself? You can also learn calculus and Metallergy on your own too. Go ahead, forge your own kitchen knives and forks, screw Big Box out of their $19. At some point, the practical, reasonable solution isn't to repair it yourself. It's to let someone else do it for you. The entire repair industry (vet here, seen it all, AMA) is built upon the idea that people have rights and there is a need for repair. That already exists. Then reality comes along and unless you've forged a strong business relationship with these big companies (example: ubreak ifixit/Samsung) you aren't going to be able to have access to their parts/tools/manuals. Not because 'you don't deserve it' or because 'your rights are in jeopardy.' But because at scale, no one, not even Samsung is doing component level repairs. There's a point at which a 3rd party repair shop has to concede a repair isn't doable (which is where Apple/Google/Samsung/ect all end up giving you a new device) without charging you as much as a new phone. This is due to the amount of physical time and opportunity costs involved with doing repairs on that level. You can go to an Apple store and get a new one in less time than most decent shops can diagnose and fix board level anything. If you participate in the Apple Ecosystem, use the backup, and pay for the apple care, you get a new device pretty much any time something happens to yours. Even in situations where you bring your phone in and 'get it fixed' there's a percentage of the time you're actually getting a new one like your old one, and you can't even tell... cuz they just moved your stuff over. That's a value to some people, but not the people who think everything should be repaired. Everything is repairable, for enough time and money. Find a repair shop that takes individual components from your device and refabricates them (doesn't exist), that's true repairability. Everyone, including rossman, is reusing/replacing from a second device. To fix one phone, you need two phones. Same for Apple, or Samsung, or anyone, really. Spend some time in repair before you make judgements.

Equipment repairman. Sometimes i end up working on gear thats 30 years old. EVERY bit of kit from this era has excellent service manuals Nowadays a 'field service manual' might as well be a one page doc 'no serviceable parts inside' That way the technician can spend ages on the problem for a nice fat invoice and then when the equipment dies you get to buy another one!
@boburanus695 күн бұрын
@ohnoitisnt 'gear' is pretty vague. If you repair stuff like dental chairs and x ray machines, ofc you're misunderstanding the difference between that and a modern mobile device. People who think a manual is going to tell you everything about a device... most devices come with a link to a pdf if you really need it. You wanna fix an iPhone? Get a straight razor and a $12 micro driver kit from Walmart. Do you really need someone to kill a tree for you to unscrew 2 pentalobes and use a razor to pry gently, creating enough room to insert a pick? Want warnings about using too much force or what could happen if you pry from the wrong edge? How about instructions on how to turn screws or remember placement? Most of what people criticize repair for... are basic skills anyone can learn. If you lack dexterity... or hands, might be a different story. As a repair tech I can confirm people mess up their own devices trying to do self repair and save money. You already have the right to do that. You'll pay for help to fix your mistakes, depending what they are... a new phone might be cheaper. Also, coming from someone using an 8 yr old smartphone to send this message. A phone I have worked on a few times. Without a manual.

Cram as much unnecessary proprietary tech and features into a car and make sure only the manufacturer has the tools and parts to fix it. These features that have major negative effects on the car if they stop working and then you’re stuck with a crazy bill. Like if you hit a curb you just totaled your car. For example I’ve got a 2018 Camry and I love it, but I had a simple evap purge valve getting stuck open….. it’s nothing serious at all, it would make the engine idle at higher RPMS and make the car hard to start after filling up… that’s it. But this generation of car, it also disables the cruise control, and pops up a malfunction message over and over on the dash even if you dismiss it. Which is very distracting. It’s ended up being $300 to replace it, it’s just one screw, one electrical harness, and two small hoses. My old Buick had the same issue and the part was $20 and just as easy to replace… it’s the American ideology of consumerism taking over

The worst part is this is everywhere. As a EX auto technician This is all that I saw people do in my old shop as well. Cars trucks no matter what they're getting more about beauty over functionality. It increases repair costs and and time. Bc manufacturers make them harder to fix

Cars are literal computer networks on wheels and I'm so glad I didn't get into automotive as a career. Sometimes the parts are serialized (a la John Deere) so that you're forced to contact the manufacturer and beg for permission to pay them to fix it.

As a mechanic's kid who has seen the results of the progression and enshittification of vehicles over the past decade or so, there's a reason I refuse to personally own a car newer than a model year of 2012 to 2014, depending on make. I don't give a shit about mileage, it's upkeep that's what matters. Mileage doesn't matter as long as you're making sure everything is up to spec for as long as possible and you keep up with regular maintenance. Newer cars make that damn near impossible, and they're more and more difficult and dangerous to repair due to the increased usage of electrical and computerized components rather than solely mechanical ones. The vehicle's systems are also prone to spontaneous failure because of a random electrical fault or computer error. Not to mention QC is almost non-existent in the first place. So many brand new cars end up having catastrophic powertrain issues right off the lot, like cylinders that aren't machined correctly, or gears inside the transmission breaking apart after less than 500 miles of normal, reasonable use. I'm good with my 2011 Chrysler T&C, thank you very much. She's got the features I need, and is actually some semblance of reliable. I just need to get the valve lifters replaced here kinda soon, is all. NBD there, I can save up for that.

@@EvilTurkeySlices the two complications with that are 1) consumer power comes from collective action; you need a lot of consumers acting in concert, and that's not always so easy to achieve. In my tiny brand new tech channel i talked about leaving IT and Tech field. It blew up with tech's from all over the world telling me they are leaving the field too. So Andy you're not along with the frustration man! So so so many of us are straight up giving the field a big middle finger and walking out because we've had it. And so many people are all starting their own business and doing their own thing. I heard a few of my viewer's say they are in process of trying to open computer companies to combat the trend. Bring back fully repairable laptops that are modular too. At a reasonable price. They are trying to save companies like yours man. If i knew how to design id join in too and become another company to join forces with all other start ups to end this crap. Unfortunately i dont know how to design, just fix. Hey man, many of us are with you! We all feel like we are turning into Louis because we are getting tired of whats happening to a field we love! If i knew of a way, id join you to create the ST laptop. (Abbreviation for your company) this way you know your selling quality because its built with quality and repairability. Loved the video man. And hey you tried hard not to curse but i get it, its hard not too. Your still cool in my book man!

For the 7th Gen intel computers, if you're concerned about the sustainability of the bypass of Windows 11, maybe you can put Linux Mint on it? You could put Mint on it and then on the website say "hey this comes with Linux just so you know"
@GSBarlev12 күн бұрын
Don't get me wrong-I've got a lovely neckbeard that I've been growing since 6.06 (Dapper Drake): but please don't recommend, much less sell, Linux-even something as beginner-friendly as Mint-to someone unless you plan on providing them tech support and hand-holding for the next year at least.

@@patrickcardon1643 The difference is Microsol and Apple *do* offer tech support-you can go into any Apple store and say, "I can't figure out how to do xyz" and they'll sit down with you and walk you through it like you're a baby. I personally think Ubuntu-based distros are *easier* to use-and more idiot-proof-than Windows, but my mom is not going to hop onto the elementaryOS Discord to ask where her applications all went (when she accidentally switched workspaces).

Some years ago I bought a samsung 55” tv, those entry level crap that somehow are 4K HDR at $600. Probably I used it like 20 days in total, since I used to watch tv on my bedroom instead of the living room, to the point that most of the time that tv was even unpluged. One day a relative was coming to my house and I decided to plug in the tv, and suddenly just after trying to turn it on, the screen died. Samsung tech support came and told me that the screen needed to be replaced and it will cost me $500. That was the last time I bought any samsung stuff. And obiously I had to throw the tv away.

I have a 20 years old laptop. That shop told me it's life is about 5 years. And I still use it daily with linux ecosystem. But I see digital products that have about 2 years official update and then dark policy to put them on the trash. Where do companies take us? Our world is made of our mind and thoughts. We know our every click and search term is raw material for big companies. I don't say that never buy new tech. But select the best long durables and use it bit by bit carefully. Once you decide that you want to live in freedom they are out of running...

I have a coworker who is an Apple Fangirl(tm). They are the biggest reason for waste! Glass backs, trash screens, and obsolescence built in! I don't buy a single phone that's above 300, and I think that's overpriced and shouldn't be! Reduce, reuse, recycle! Buy less stuff. By gifting someone else a used phone, like destructive children, it should save you money. Recycle by reclaiming the precious metals.

The correct white goods handle advancement is Neff ovens who have a mechanical handle that you pull down the over door, the door slides under the oven and the handle hinges upward for that. It's the most amazing advancement in oven technology since fan assisted electric ovens. It gets completely out of the way which makes your kitchen much safer and means you aren't reaching over a hot oven door to reach it. On cars it makes sense to conceal the door handle because of drag which is a lot bigger problem than you'd think even from a door handle, let alone wing mirrors. But I've not seen an oven going 70mph down the motorway.
