In this episode, we explore how saturated the color in shadows should be and how it depends on the local color of objects. We’ll also look at how to harmonize all the shadows in a painting, regardless of their
local colors, to create unity and readability. At the end, I’ll do a demonstration to show how changes in shadow saturation can affect the overall look of a portrait.

Now I know what feels so nice here... Your setup/filming/editing are simple and authentic. Thus, one feels like he's literally in the workshop behind you. For example seeing real time, uncut painting demo on a real piece while explaining calmly always gets me.

Only a very good painter can make the difficult stuff look simple - and only a very good teacher can explain the difficulties in a way that one understands. Fantastic session this Regina. Thanks again. In my opinion one of the best videos on shadow and saturation !

Hi Sven, I can’t tell you how important your message was to me. Thank you for your kindness and inspiration to make videos. I love teaching but without being in direct contact it’s hard to know if it makes a difference.❤️🎨❤️

Loved the demonstration, particularly the two apples side by side, projecting their color over to their complimentary. Red shining on to the green apple.

first of all thank you very much for the clear explanation. i was wondering what color and saturation to use between the edges of light and shadow? is this also dependent on temperature?

Hi Ingrid, it’s a very good question and I’m going to make a video for you. The area where the light and shadow meets is called transition, In that area, we use cool and disaturated colors. The explanation is that you want that area to move towards the shadow andand recede back and only cool and low chroma colors will move back in light. Strong saturated warm colors in light come forward and that’s not what transition should do. Also you can add a hints of the background color and grey/ violet into transition to bring them closer to the back

Does the hue and value of the surface the shadow is falling on have an effect on the shadow?

Yes, local color (hue) of the object is one part of shadow the other part is darkness, when you mix them together you get a very desaturated dark local color of the object or surface. So the shadow should be dark, warm and desaturated version of its local color. But the complexity is that it’s often looks cooler, lighter and more colorful because of the secondary light source, reflective light and bouncing light. The solution is not to paint shadows as we see them but as it benefits the whole painting. I hope it helps. Gary please send me any questions or ideas for new videos.

@@ArtHorizonLyubovnaya Two topics that need more exposure in videos are 1. When to use transparent paints other than for glazing and 2. Close ups of different types of brush strokes.
