It is very common with the death is that they either don't know they are dead or sometimes they misinterpret the reason why they stay behind or their purpose in finding the path to cross over, just like Emily who thinks that the reason why she has to return from beyond the grave was to find a new husband when she forgets that the marriage will remain unbound because she is dead and her husband is alive(This is more than just about the fact that she loves the idea of Victor Van Dort) when the real reason for her reanimation is to save another bride from suffering the same fate as she did and to also be resolved for her vengeance in favor for the wrong that was committed upon herself as well.

I actually appreciated that they made Victoria likable, and not bratty and demanding, as most fiancées are depicted in movies. I like to think that if Victor and Victoria had a daughter, they'd have named her Emily, and she'd have a fascination with butterflies.

Considering that there are some implications that emily is from victoria's family, those three elderly people might be those still living who remembers and mourns emily. It's my personal headcanon.

All things considered, things had to happen the way it did for poetic justice and resolving bad karma. And emily moving on, finding peace allows her to give the true spiritual blessing needed for victoria and victor's union (there are implications that emily is from victoria's family, so she'd be "family" blessing the marriage); her tossing the bouquet is not just her acting what she would have done in life and letting go, it's also passing down all the items needed for a marriage; something old, something borrowed, something blue; emily's old blue bouquet is just that.

I believe that Victor and Victoria's almost immediate trust of one another stems from a place of true camaraderie, companionship and loyalty as they are presumably the first friends that they have ever had, apart from Hildegard and Mayhew, respectively; given that they both came from highly sheltered household environments in which they were never truly presented with the opportunity to interact with other individuals who fostered their unique artistic interests and encouraged them to pursue them fully. Although there is also the element of gender expectations involved (given that Victor himself posessed a significant academic, socioeconomic and artistic leverage that Victoria could never had access to because of the decadent state of her family's legacy and wealth in society), I find it very interesting that even though Victor and Victoria are kindred spirits, their challenges present numerous differences and similarities that are worth noting. Victor for instance, did have the societal permissivity to pursue his flourishing interests in butterfly entomology, botanical and environmental illustration and music in great part because of his gender, but he was never truly provided with the necessary emotional and financial support to pursue these interests to their fullest extent, because of his codependent relationship with his parents (more specifically Mrs. Van Dort) who is described by Victor as having been very dissaproving and even in the original script, it is also described that Victor's social anxiety was caused because of his toxic relationship with his mother and his father's passivity to her agression; however he is entirely the opposite of his family, an incredibly doting, highly intelligent and observant young man who shows true devotion to those he cares for and his identity is not defined by money or traditional masculine stereotypes. Victoria however is incredibly passionate and fond of music, literature and even in certain parts of the story, highly inquisitive in her spirituality. She is also profoundly determined, caring and a highly intelligent strategist and resourceful young woman, even going as far as to risk her own emotional and physical safety in her abusive household and being accused of the so-called "Female Hysteria" by her family because she confronted the Pastor and was dilligent and proactive in helping Victor even beyond her own means and even if it meant finding a supernatural solution to his predicament with Emily. Their relationship is this impassioned because they are devoted to the goal of creating a home in which their partner can find safety and the freedom to express themselves and their identities without reproach, something that they ultimately find in each other.

​@@LadyLuckyLu that's because a lot of people were rooting for Victor and Emily to get together and are pinning the blame on Victoria for 'getting in the way'. A lot of people give her crap because, yeah she was trying to warn the priest about Emily taking Victor away and her going through with marrying Lord Barkis. One, she married him not out of love but money and is also BEING forced to marry by her parents who've never given her the time of day in her whole life, probably since the day she was born, until they needed her to marry for money, not love. Two, A LITERAL CORPSE took Victor away, a walking, talking dead person. If I saw a loved one of mine get taken away by a corpse I'd be frantic and trying to get help too. Plus in the end, Victoria wasn't getting in the way of the wedding, she was watching from a distance in shock, probably cause a whole grave yard came back to life and is celebrating a wedding, but is also shocked that Victor isn't going through with it but she NEVER steps out to stop it herself, she watches because she knows it's Victors choice by him reciting the vows. It's actually EMILY who makes the choice to stop the wedding because she knows its not right for her to take someone else away from a loved one, a genuine loved one who cares, which she is but she realizes what and whom she's taking Victor from and through that moment she stumbled through the vow she makes the choice to put a stop to it. This is what we call a character arc.

What a great point! I experience this with my in-laws, and I never saw it in this movie till now. My husband was the one to tell me they’re pretty narcissistic and materialistic, and kind of toxic, but he still loves them and tries to honor them because they are his parents. I see all of those traits in them, and it makes me dislike them, but I choose to work hard to be friendly and kind with them, because I know it means a lot to him.

That's healthiest for us. _Especially_ when it comes to grandkids, because I've already seen that with their other grandkids, they feel completely entitled to their time, pictures of them whenever they demand, expecting their parenting advice to be taken, etc. When I say we're friendly with them, I really mean cordial, but taking everything they say with a grain of salt, and not being pressured by them into anything (while remaining cordial). You can say she has finally see things as they are, she wanted to be married so much that she couldn’t be in peace after being killed…She is kind, and loveable, but she can’t live no more, because what happened and it was time to accept it. Is more an I want you, than I love, until Emily let him go thinking about his happiness. Her story is more about loving herself before loving someone else. They talk in the movie a lot about how she wanted to be married when she was alive, like obsession, and ending with her married to someone dead or alive would be terrible for her and the partner. I am so tired of the hatred toward Victoria when she didn’t even do anything wrong. Like she’s a victim of neglect and abuse from her family and was sold off like chattel for them not to end up in the poor house not once but twice. And thankfully things worked out and she and Victor ended up developing a real love between them but if she hadn’t been so lucky? Probably would have been worse for her. But she literally does nothing wrong over the entire runtime. I know a lot of people like Emily and I do too, but she is the one in the wrong here for kidnapping Victor and forcing him to be attached to her when he’s engaged to someone else. Which is something that she realizes toward the end of the movie in her selfless act of letting him go.

It's what bias does to people; it clouds our mind from seeing the wrongs and rights. Besides the fact that we get more time with emily and learn what drives her, emily is a pretty nice and charming person and her piano skills is a great bonus; she is just more fun and easier to relate to for most people. There is also the fact that people tend to be ignorant of the societal implications in the movie, which is based on real life historical settings; victoria's family is old money gentry/nobility now bankrupt, victor's family is new money merchant class, women needed to marry for financial stability and societal protection, being expressive and passionate was considered unladylike or improper, etc etc. Knowing these details gives perspective into all the characters, especially victoria, and again, most people aren't well informed about these things, especially nowadays unless one is a history or jane austen nerd.

Something I’ve heard recently is so much hate towards Victoria for being selfish and only wanting marriage, and also Emily for stealing Victoria’s chance at happiness. We don’t see much of Victoria and Victor’s relationship, we see he has more chemistry with Emily, but we do see Victoria is neglected by her cruel parents and is marrying into Victor’s newly rich family because her family is bankrupt. Emily on the other hand has been waiting for years for someone to ask for her hand so she can be at peace. She does technically kidnap Victor but once he understands her situation and thinks Victoria is marrying someone else, he offers to give his life for Emily. That is true kindness. He is not a bad guy, he’s just a shy, sheltered guy who has good intentions. I understand all the arguments made about Victoria and Emily, but when you step back and see things from their perspective you can understand they just want to be happy and they do care for Victor. He cares for them as well, although he was terrified of getting married and making a mess of the wedding rehearsal, he is still a good guy under pressure to marry into nobility by his parents.

I always feel sad this story gets divorced from it's Russian folklore roots. The story is basically the same with what Burton created with one minor difference. Emily dies because of cultural oppression (think Esmeralda's song from Hunchback of Notre Dame to read between the lines KZbin might delete my comment for). Anyway Victor and Victoria are of the same peoples in the story and their promise to live on and remember Emily has more resonance because they mean it deeply. They won't let women like her be forgotten. I understand why that context got cut because it's not wildly family friendly but it ends up meaning that they try and restore some peace to the past. Russian fairytales are really really well written.

I know it gets glossed over in this episode because Emily's heartbreak is more core to the story than her actual death, but I also like to think that part of her reaching fulfillment at the end is the realization of who Barkis is and what he did to her. Not just the solving of that last lingering mystery, but connecting that all of her heartbreak, her desire to be a bride, all those years of pining... was ultimately because of a man who was, to put it lightly, a complete asshole. If Rebecca's interpretation of Emily is someone who's been living in heartbreak, a state that feels like death, Barkis is the one that put her there, both literally and figuratively. By confronting him and what he did to her, I think that's what helps her realize that while she wants to be a bride, what she needed was that sense of closure, and marrying Victor wouldn't give her that. I also like how, in terms of character design, so many of the people in the afterlife look like they're all bones and they're just enjoying themselves completely, while Emily's got more of an undead look to her, showing how she's still attached to her life. Granted, I think how bony everyone is or isn't there is just an indication for how long each person's been dead, but hey, can't let that get in the way of an interesting theory!

Somehow the intro summary is the first time I realized Emily is using Victor as a rebound for the heartbreak of being killed by her fiancé. She isn't clinging to Victor just because she likes him, she likes the idea of him as the person who married her. When she recognizes that Victor is a good person, she also realizes that tearing him away from someone else just perpetuates the cycle of heartbreak, and thus she needs to let him go.

It's really a testiment to the animators and Helena Bonham Carter's performance that Emily can be a rotting, undead corpse who can look and sound very frightening and creepy one minute, but also be this adorable cinnamon roll who you don't want to see be hurt, and want her to be happy.

He joins in by continuing her theme, she insists on repeating it, he puts a spin on it, she repeats again but gives it a slight variation in the harmony; then he plays his own theme, she isn't impressed... yet, but when he starts again with an ostinato she joins in wholeheartedly - and it's with _his_ theme in _her_ low register.

I love how even though Emily is the one who's dead, she is still so beautiful and always has this bright light/glow behind her. She's graceful and full of life, having many expressions. The contrast with the living people, who are monotone in color (like they mentioned) and almost emotionless except for maybe greed/hate, is amazing and just makes you wanna root for her and the dead. Just a masterpiece I've loved as a child and adult 😍

@ojealism yeah but I like how she sort of redeemed herself at the end and realized she was in the wrong. I don’t think she was a horrible person but definitely very desperate selfish and delusional. I guess victor wasn’t perfect either because he could have explained it to Emily without being harsh and let her know straight up that he was practicing on her hand for Victoria. However that would make a short and kinda boring film so the story throughout and how it ended was perfectly fine, its just how people reacted to it that upsets me. Also victor wasn't going to marry Emily for her sake, he was going to accept death. The moment Emily looks back before passing on always breaks my heart. She looks back at what she never got to have but accepts that fact and finds peace that she was able to give the one thing she wanted most to Victor and Victoria. The music adds to it as the sad note plays with them standing at the altar with their whole life ahead of them and Emily is willingly giving it up knowing that it's not what's best for her or them if they had gone through with their original plan.

I've seen sources online talking about how the original folktale was Jewish in origin and that the "Emily" character was meant to represent young Jewish women who had been kidnapped from their weddings and murdered during the pogroms (as an act of genocide), and Victor and Victoria were a more modern Jewish couple. If that's accurate, that would have been fascinating to include in the movie somehow - Emily's heart being appeased not only because Victor showed her true love, but because he and Victoria are able to live in safety.

I rewatched Corpsbride last weekend. As a gown up I notice so many details I missed. How neglectfull Victor and Victorias parents are. And People seem to believe Vicky and Vic don't connect, well they see each other the first time when the movie starts but they do connect over the Music in those stolen moments. They aren't even supposed to have those few minutes alone at the piano. But in those minutes Victor sees how gentle and kind Victoria is. And Victoria sees that Victor would be willing to let her learn the piano. She has a chance of happyness there. What many people don't realize is how awfull the position is Victoria finds herself in when Emily kidnapps Victor. She is basically left at the altar. That makes her unmarridgeable! If she doesn't marry the vilain she won't marry at all. Victorian etiquette was cruel in that regard. Victoria would be at her parents mercy and her parents would not be mercyfull. They want money and Victoria can't help them to get it anymore. Imagine her live. Victor knew that. That's why he tried so desperately to go back. That is far from selfish. Emily on the other hand had it bad, too. She was burried alive. That's why her skeleton hand sticks out. She tried to claw herself out. Her dress is ripped very high nearly to the hips. That's no fashion choice. Think about what that suggests. Of course she wants happieness but as she says at the end. I can't steal another brides happieness and groom. Victor never belonged to her. As the old skeleton told Emily: It's till death separates us and you are death. You aren't married to him. To put it simple Emily has no business meddling with the living. Yes she was hurt, yes she didn't deserve her fate but that makes her actions not less wrong.

A lot of this is right but the buried alive is a bit of a stretch. The story isn't originally Tim Burton's. It's a Russian folktale he adapted. She is thrown into an incredibly shallow grave in the story to humiliate her corpse as part of their murder. Because the story has deeper cultural reference points then this film was ok exploring. (understandable as it links to genocide) long story short. Burton and the team kept ALOT of the original story beats. Way more than you'd expect. The shallow grave is one of them

I think it’s unfair to suggest Victor is doing anything wrong when he lies to Emily to get back to the living world. I know that he soon learns that she is fundamentally a good, kind person, but at that point the only thing he knows about her is that she wants him to stay in the land of the dead. She essentially wants him to die. This is life or death for him, and he has no way of knowing how she would react to any suggestion he’s not willing to stay. He is doing *exactly* what you should do when you are kidnapped by someone who is telling they want to keep you prisoner forever (or kill you) cause they love you.

I think as much as the world of the dead is exciting compared to the living, everyone there is stuck exactly how they died. There's no growth or thoughts of the future, even a wedding is something extraordinary. Emily is charming and talented, but as one of the dead she can only think of the past, not the future. She doesn't want a partner for eternity, she just wants someone to finish her wedding. Victoria, while subdued in comparison, represents the reality of marriage. Her world is drab and full of rules and responsibilities, things Victor would rather avoid, but it also has growth and change. It's in Victoria that he sees a life ahead of him, while marrying Emily would mean literally choosing suicide.

I think that he still is acting on selfishness because he's only thinking about himself, but I don't think that it's a bad thing and he had very good reasons to act the way he did. I think that everyone needs a bit of selfishness to be able to look out for themselves. I love the exploration of losing something that you wanted the most, and I can relate to it heavily. Long story short: I did ballet for 11 years. I started when I was 2. I didn't want to make a career out of it or anything, but it was my outlet and my everything. I ended up getting a benign, but aggressive tumor in my fibula that had to be surgically removed. I also had to get a bone graft because my bone was so hollowed from the tumor. I rehabbed my ankle (it was my lower fibula and close to my ankle), but the tumor reoccurred. It was never the same after the 2nd surgery, and I had to stop dancing because it wasn't safe or a possibility. I legitimately mourned the loss of ballet in my life. Mourned what I thought my life would be. Eventually, I accepted it and now I'm happy, but it is definitely a process. This movie shows that, and its amazing because of that.

I just realized something about you guy's fashion choices in your videos. Jono's is often wearing blue which is the more collected of colors. It's more composed and meant to be calming. Jono's the therapist, so it represents his role in the videos. Alan is mostly wearing orange (best color) which is more of a symbol for passion and creation. I find it incredibly interesting that the story of the Corpse Bride takes place during the Victorian Era and two of its protagonists are named "Victor" and "Victoria" and yet they completely subverted and challenged the traditional gender-based stereotypes that were found in the historical period in which the story is based in; essentially defying what "Victorian" society expects of them and their characterizations are incredibly modern; and not inherently "Victorian" or infused with Victorian ideals. Even if the characters' names are in essence; "Victorian", they are not defined by what society and their families expect them to acheive, not even by their own names. Very fascinating.

I think it's great that the Land of the Dead always seems more "alive" than the village. Between filming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton called on his best friend and his dear wife to voice the stop motion animation “Corpse Bride”. The film is a beautiful story of a catastrophic groom who fails to say his wedding vows and accidentally proposes to a different bride. The analogy that the film makes is very interesting, as the world of humans is completely dark, gloomy, empty and the world of the dead is filled with parties, music and drinks. An accurate shot by Tim that demonstrates his incredible skill when it comes to animation. When I touch the lit candle, I don't feel pain. It doesn't matter if I'm cold or hot. My heart doesn't beat, but it still breaks; And he continues to suffer, refusing to surrender. Death is in me, But I still have tears to give. ♪♪ The plot itself is just good, without any major surprises, what is most incredible about this film is Tim Burton's ability to create a macabre earthly setting, almost in black and white, melancholic and lifeless, and in counterpoint a land of the dead full of of color, music, joy, party, full of life! And of course, this trio of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter is a delight ♥ I recommend it! “Can a heart break after it has stopped beating?” A film where the dead are more alive and colorful, while the living are dead and ''gray''. I love Tim Burton's work in both animation and live action. Here in particular, it continues with its style and characteristics: Dark, fun, crazy, original, different, brilliant. It is a work that criticizes the Victorian era where there are hypocritical, bitter, gray people who only think about appearances, status and power in every way. And suddenly the character discovers the underground world where the dead are much happier than those alive on the surface. It is an unforgettable work, with peculiar and unforgettable characters such as the skeleton dog who is very cute and loyal. And it features a main character in conflict about the meaning of marriage and what actions he will take in life from now on. A concise script that gives us a masterpiece that once again the great Tim Burton nails the production, especially in the visual aspect, the effects are fantastic, the studio work is incredible. It's no wonder that Tim Burton's animation and live action works are my favorites. 10/10. Three things to comment: 1) Victória looks a lot like Anya Taylor-Joy; 2) I think it's cool that the detail of the world of the dead has more colors than the gray world of the living, which is usually the opposite. This must be because those alive are kind of dead inside with all that automatic life filled with antipathy; 3) You may not be a fan of stop-motion gothic animations, but the rhythm, the songs and the excellent production make it a memorable work.

I've watched this so many times, and only now realized - that moment in the church when Emily notices Victoria, she realizes she's put Victoria into the same position she herself was in, and instead of thinking of her as "the other woman," empathizes with her. If she had married Victor and killed him then, she would have left another bride out in the cold alone, as she was. That I think is how the switch flipped in her head.

I really can't say how much I needed to see this video today. I've been dealing with the end of a long term relationship and today was one of those bad days where it feels like everything is hopeless. I think I might go rewatch Corpse Bride, I feel like it'll have more of an impact this time

Whoa I need to watch this movie again. I think I watched it right before I got dumped, but man was I Emily after the breakup... Everything Jon is saying is what I needed to hear several months ago, the vengefulness, the jadedness, and ultimately the self-acceptance needed to actually move on

Thank y’all for covering this movie! I’ve never seen it, but I can relate to the feelings that heartbreak can elicit. Also, since Alan didn’t cry in this episode, I made sure to do so for him. 😅 I had to move away from the only true friend group I’ve ever had a few months ago, and the sadness of heartbreak has just started to surface from the depths of my soul. I’ve been finding it really hard to feel empathy for anyone else for the past half year, and this made me realize I’ve probably been hurting others because of this, which I really regret. 😔Now I just have to remember how to start choosing to care again…

Oh my gosh! I'm so glad you all did this movie. Corpse Bride is one of my all time favorites with such beautiful and well done writing and, well, everything else.
