What Craving REALLY is According to the Suttas

One of the most hotly debated topics on our Discord server concerns itself with the very word ``craving'' or ``tanha'' itself.
Especially when new people of the modern Jhana traditions join, they often think of craving in radically different terms compared to this channel or the Suttas.
For them, craving is ``momentary'' and not much more, while I try to explain it as ``all-encompassing'' here.
After all, craving is THE central thing we want to overcome to end suffering!
People mean many different things with craving.
It can be good, momentary, or even a view.
Seeing craving on a broad level makes a lot of sense in the light of the Sutta definitions of suffering.
You are only really free when the uncontrollable circumstances can no longer make you fall back/suffer!
You have to be ``free'' before, while, and after you do something!

Great vid! I have two questions : - What is a sotapanna in this larger context / definition of craving? Unlike a sakhadagami, a sotapanna hasn't started to weaken sensual desires and ill-will. Does it mean that a sotapanna is simply someone whose views have changed? They no longer regard craving as their good friend even though they have yet to start to weaken it? - does this larger definition imply that we need to do two things: (1) attack craving in the background by working on our views, values, beliefs and assumptions (the positive aspect of right effort and the application of right mindfulness) while (2) also restraining craving which manifests here and now more grossly (I. E. : I want to turn on KZbin right this instant) ? Thank you 🙏

Hey! Technically, the Sotapanna has _very much_ started weakening craving, just not on such a fundamental level compared to the Skadagami! It can behelpful to think of a SOtapanna as someone who has overcome the 4 Upadanas/fuels, which is a definitiont he Buddha sometimes used. You no longer believe in a self, in views, in rites & rituals, and neither do you believe _sensuality to be pleasant_ - but all 4 kinda go hand in hand. This leads to a major shift in perspective, but you still have a lot of leftover kamic habits of greed/aversion/delusion! And I would say that you still have the 2 major ingredients... namely Samadhi and Discernment. Samadhi comes about through what you mentioned (technically, views etc are _also_ craving) and discernment almost becomes automatic once you Samadhi is strong. So in one sense yes, in another there is a bit more "remembering the Dhamma" involved!

@@TheDhammaHub @TheDhammaHub Thanks! That alternative definition (overcoming the 4 upadannas) makes a lot of sense, I had never come across it. Generally speaking, with sotapatti, there is this sense of not being able to go back. Regardless of the definition, something (or some things) have been seen and cannot be unseen. That's also why it's hard to make it across to someone else because they must "see" for themselves.

@@kzantal Absolutely! Also, others usually cannot see it because they are still distracting themselves with actions of greed, aversion, and delusion ;D As long as they do that, there is no Dhamma for them no matter how much you "push their faces right into it" xD Tehy simply do not fulfill that precondition^^

Where is this language related to pressure coming from? I know that Hillside Hermitage use the same concept (along with a second enduring theme, enduring). I’m just curious what / who is the original source of this imagery?
