I remember when I heard about this mission and I thought "Why waste time and money going to that snowball just to see nothing other than a dead world?" Then after seeing that first image of Pluto with that heart shaped glacier and all the color... I was blown away! It actually made me feel like a kid again listening, and reading along with, "Adventures in the solar system: Planetron and me". Even though, now, a lot of what I learned, is wrong...

frank brown I watched it again, this is what was actually said about the photo it took of Pluto with the color I spoke about, "Refined ultra-high resolution true color image." It was when it was passing close Jupiter when the narrator said "This image was created by combining several photographs that were taken in different colors exposing the gas planets turbulent diverse atmosphere as it transitions from day to night." Nowhere in the video did it say they Photoshopped onto grey scale images....

Pluto is considered a dwarf planet as it has not cleared the area around its orbit. It orbits in a disc-like zone beyond the orbit of Neptune called the Kuiper belt, a distant region populated with frozen bodies left over from the solar system's formation. There are other dwarf planets besides Pluto such as Eris and Haumea.

Well done on the video quality and excellent narration! I'm still puzzled how we here on Earth lose radio stations after only a few miles (radio waves) or how wifi signal can only go so far also. How do they communicate with these satellites? if it's radio waves, it makes it extremely hard to believe we have amplifiers that powerful on Earth much less attached to a satellite to send the images back? BILLIONS OF MILES? makes me scratch my head for sure.

from what i understand the signals being sent from the satellites are relatively strong, but the due to the vast distance are extremely weak when they reach earth at the speed of light. but there are massive radio arrays on earth such as the DSN (deep space network) that can pick up the most weak signals imaginable. it would be like your car picking up radio with a dish the size of multiple miles across! similar to how more light can be collected by a bigger primary mirror, a bigger radio receiver can pick up very weak signals...even from 10's of billions of miles away. hope this helped!

I studied astronomy at Northeastern University in Boston. It has always fascinated me. Ever since I was young. I've seen hundreds of these videos. Some are not bad and some are very poorly made. Then there are those very rare exceptions. The good to excellent ones. I rate them on a one to ten scale. This particular video (along with the other one's they've put out), are easily on the 9 to 10 scale. The photos they have are nothing short of spectacular! Now, I know they're not their photo's, however, they use these NASA released images that others don't or won't bother to use. The narration is superb, with the explanations of some very complicated issues spoken in lay terms. Anyone can understand what New Horizons has done. So, again I've rated this fantastic video on a 9 to 10 as far as excellence. Great job you guys. Looking forward to many more. Thank you...
