A few days ago ‪@penguinz0‬ known as Cr1TiKaL released a video called "Is Expensive Whiskey a Scam". They made a lot of very common mistakes and I thought it would be fun to talk about their video, correct some of their errors, and suggest some whiskies they may really enjoy!

@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I do, because at best they are wasting people's time. At worst, they're spreading misinformation or at least perpetuating myths to people who most likely don't know any better. If they are going to do these kinds of videos, they should at the bare minimum bring in an expert in whatever it is that they are doing to fact-check and discuss these things with them. They didn't do that, they clearly didn't do any research whatsoever, and it's clearly meant to be click bait. I hate stuff like that.

I saw that video. It is clear that the purpose of it was to do something funny rather than educational, so they had to give whisky newbies firewater that would be hard to handle in order to see the reactions. It works - it is always fun to watch people try to cope with booze that they can't handle. The order of the tasting was all wrong. They started with some hard core stuff that will burn you out if you aren't prepared for such things. When that light Japanese grain whisky came along, I wasn't surprised that they liked it. It must have been a relief after tasting through the difficult whiskies that came before. However, it would have worked a lot better as a warm-up, and getting used to that whisky first might have made the more potent ones go down a little easier. I must admit that I'm a little curious about it; the price isn't out of line for a 30-year age statement. However, 40% ABV is too low, so it won't be optimally presented. I think the line-up suggested in this video would be a lot better for them or for anyone else who is getting started. Glen Grant has a good character. Though the 12-year is too watered down for my taste, the flavor is still there, and it would be a good choice for beginners. (I have an independent bottling of a 25-year Glen Grant that is wonderful.) Bunnahabhain is great too. I like the 18-year, but it has recently become absurdly expensive. Four Roses single barrel is also a great choice. It is readily available almost everywhere. When I put it side by side with Blanton's at a bar, Four Roses blew Blanton's out of the water. Blanton's is also good for beginners, but it is too hard to find, and Four Roses is a better choice anyway.

I agree with your assessment which is also why I didn't just say "these guys are bad and should feel bad". Other than the call out on Michters pronunciation which is not a deal. I wasn't negative at all. The more I think about the lineup I gave them the more I like it. I very much hope they give it a try

@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I think your line-up is a great start, though it is a little heavy on the barley, and I think it could be augmented with a few things from other categories. I have a friend who I have been introducing to whisky. We started with bourbon (because that was her initial interest) and moved on to rye, and single malts are next on the agenda. In the bourbon and rye categories, there are some beginner friendly whiskies that worked for her. For bourbon, she liked Basil Hayden and Elijah Craig Toasted. Both of these have good flavors and are easy to drink, sometimes dangerously so. In the rye category, we went to a bar that had a single barrel pick of Sazerac rye. The standard version is good enough, but I think they got a honey barrel, because it really hit all the right notes. Both of us went home with a bottle. I'm a fan of hard core, difficult rye, but I can appreciate something that is well made in a more approachable style. Rye is rather difficult for beginners, but there are ryes that can gently push a beginner into the rye rabbit hole. Sazerac is definitely one of them. Knob Creek is another good option.

There’s definitely a gap for a video discussing much of the invented pomposity that surrounds whiskey. Older, usually British, gentleman outlining how to properly enjoy your whiskey, etc. For example almost everything associated with Scotch is invented 20th century British empire advertising reacting to the Irish war of independence. Only blends are Scottish - and even the column still central to their creation was invented by an Irish guy, but rejected by the Irish distillers as creating a “silent spirit” - everything else is Irish, including the use of peat to dry the barley. ‘Single malt’ is absolute marketing rubbish - blending spirit from one distillery, which could come from different stills in that distillery and barrels matured in different locations in that complex, doesn’t create some magic that taking a barrel from another distillery 500 yards down the road and blending it with your own can’t create. Distillers only began bottling their own products relatively recently, just over a century ago, prior to that you’d just dish it out usually to local pubs who’d ‘bond’ whiskey. Which is why you can find 200 year old port wine in any old restaurant in Portugal, but even a 100 year old bottle of whiskey is rare as hens teeth in spite whiskey being a high proof drink that won’t go bad if stored even mildly efficiently. (Port is higher proof than normal wine which is why it lasts like a spirit). Almost all brands, basic to what’s now viewed as luxury, bottled at bare minimum 40% well up into the 1980’s. Meaning younger consumers are actually more “sophisticated” drinkers than older, who’ve been drinking 40% chill filtered stuff that called “quality” most of their lives. Rant over!

Honestly hope these guys see this cuz it would be cool. The reason being: I hate these types of reaction videos. They aren't made to introduce folks into a wonderful world of a particular nuanced hobby or interest. This is also done with reactions to heavy metal music. They throw the most extreme thing they can at people with no knowledge or experience just for the sake of a reaction, then those people think THAT is what that thing is. Imagine if they'd given them Ardbeg?

I haven't had their stuff recently, the bottles I have were their very first batches... I enjoyed it then but sadly can't say anything about the new batches. Most distilleries get better over time until they get bought up by larger companies, so I'd say it's worth the chance! I prefer the 4 grain to the rye, but I also think they're both good.
