@arbitraryalias9825
@arbitraryalias9825 3 жыл бұрын
@@md-im8qp can I get a source on these definitions because it sounds like you just made them up expert usually means someone who has a lot of experience and technical knowledge. usually they're well-rounded and have a good understanding about almost all areas of a subject. wendell of lvl1techs for example enthusiast is less defined. in pc tech describes tinkerers, hackers, overclockers. the type of person who cares about memory timings or watercooling or CO2 overclocking. sometimes it just means high end hardware so I think a tech expert is definitely interested in workstations and enterprise grade hardware, gaming would merely be a hobby for them. an enthusiast cares about all sorts of stuff that everyday people couldn't care less about but they might have very limited technical understanding outside of their area of enthusiasm IMO cellphone reviewers and macbook/ipad reviewers could be called cellphone/mac enthusiasts, but they don't really go into enough detail to justify that title. all they really care about are the aspects that average everyday users care about

Not at all. First it runs on open source software, meaning if you want to change something about it, you still can. While it's designed to be easy to just plug into a computer, there's also nothing stopping you connecting it to a switch either. Unlike an iphone it's also not aimed at consumers, it's aimed at small businesses who don't want to take on the job and time playing tech support when that's not what their company does. This is designed so that a small company can just plug it in and let any problems be solved by their support plan. Why would a small video editing company take the time to learn about FreeNAS, setup a server and deal with any tech support themselves? They want to edit video, not be a sysadmin. Also it's not even overly priced, I just quickly speced how much a Dell MD3060e NAS would cost with the same amount of storage, and the answer is closer to $80,000. There's really zero reason to hate on this Jellyfish company.

ProTip: Using enterprise SSD for long-term storage is a bad idea if they aren't powered on most of the time. Using any SSD for long term offline storage is a bad idea, but especially enterprise. They can start to lose bits after a few months for enterprise. A couple of years for consumer. Just throwing that out there in case anybody wasn't aware. Use SSD all day as working drives, but ALWAYS use mechanical drives for archival of your important stuff.

I think what this topic really comes down to is convenience to the end user. MKBHD said it best when its just plug and play, and then I'm on the flip side with Linus. I would rather take the time to build it myself, but I also see the flip side where if you have the money and it's not an issue, turn-key for a business makes sense rather than the down time and man hours constructing it. The sad part is this reminds me so much of the film industry as a whole. There are producers who will nickel and dime the crew and then turn around and buy the most expensive wrong product because they heard others do it, disregarding the advice of their own underpaid crew members. The Jellyfish is a product targeted at the ignorant who have money but not the time to do the research for actual industry best practices themselves. I see it so incredibly often that I feel like Linus making this video and calling out the behaviour is not only necessary but essential and still valid today. Honestly on that note I would love to see a video testing the ridiculously over used LaCie Rugged’s versus home made external drives.

I can empathize with Linus here personally. How many times have I gone out of my way and helped people like my family or very close friends with a computer or some sort of high effort on my part to make their lives easier and then they just either got rid of it or end up ignoring me and my advice that I put a lot of effort into, because something else came alongside and took the place of that. That is by far the most frustrating thing I deal with. Definitely makes you feel less valued. Now I know this video is meant to the informative and a little funny, but I have a feeling Linus is a little hurt from it. No one can blame him.

Out of the tech channels mentioned in this video linus and his team emphasis on his team are techy nerds which is a good thing, the rest are just internet personalities who found their niche talking about apple and the latest smartphone. Ive been using unraid for years with no issues. You might actually learn a thing or two by troubleshooting your server. MKBHD and IJUSTINE wanted apple care for their server so they shelled out 30k LOL..

Would love to see some sort of shoot out between the Linus custom, the expensive jelly fish and then toss in a top specked QNAP and Synology appropriately configured to find out the cost of the performance / storage for each. Also extra points for how much space they take up as the GO to case Linux picks is HUGE.
