Political scientist here. Disagreement usually doesn't lead to violence when it occurs at the level of policy, but when it occurs at the level of process it leads to violence up to even genocide and civil war. That is, if folks think the process is illegitimate then they resort to violence to settle policy disputes. The US is not just a democracy, but a constitutional democracy. It is supposed too depend on the rule of law and employ fair and legitimate processes. So the Republicans are undermining the rule of law because they are undermining the legitimacy of the process. This is what makes it so dangerous. You all may have thought of this already, but I thought it is worth pointing out.

I'm sure some Republicans, both elected and unelected, are completely supportive of constitutional democracy and for all the right reasons. Unfortunately, there is also a constituency within the politics that we often call realists and not idealists. Those folks see politics as about power and will do what they can to achieve it and maintain it. Under strict interpretations of this approach to politics the rule of law and constitutions really don't matter. It is about power. Think of some of the remarks of Steve Cannon lately. So you need a crucial number of people in the right places to maintain the rule of law.

I think Clare and Nate's follow-up to Perry's points were dismissive. Perry is talking about the growing diversity of suburbs. We all know neighborhoods are racially segregated but that's not his point. And maintaining the "Black" vote can be done if Democrats address the issues Perry raised (e.g., education). His points can stand alone without your correction.

538 talking about class. FINALLY! Here's the basics of class: Do you hire people? or do you *get* hired by people? There's the most basic class distinction. Doesn't matter how much you make, that defines your class. If you *get* hired, you're in the working class. There are a couple gradations in the working class. i.e. Professional Managerial Class (PMC), where you have power over others in the working class, but you're not the owner.

Watch Perry when there is a group-wide shot. You will see that, frequently, his video feed is not as smooth and his frame rate is not as consistent when compared to the other 3. It could be because of his recording software or hardware or (more likely, imo) that his connection has a higher latency and is (correctly) prioritizing his voice feed over his video feed. I agree with the decision (likely Galen's) to show a more flattering still of Perry than a stutter slideshow of his camera feed while he speaks. His mouth would basically never line up with his voice, based on the frozen video we do see of him. This is not the first episode I've noticed this.

I think that the idea that problems with democracy don’t impact our everyday life, is one with a lot of white privilege. 38:30 Not a single member of my extended family can identify with Latinx, to make a personal anecdote. A lot of them feel like it's just another White Intellectuals want to decide how we exist and are identified, and not ourselves who make those choices. Much like the constant discourse about, "How Hispanic folks identify" or whatever with the whole Ethnicity vs Race divide. Or even the "Intellectual" discussion about how it's bad that words have gender in Spanish, a discussion viewed by many as led by a lot of nonnative speakers and people who want to enforce Anglo ideals onto us. For better or for worse, that's how they feel, and even sometimes hoe I feel. Most are lifelong Democrats, but that aspect of Democratic messaging rings really hollow with them. For reference, I am third generation, and everyone from my cousins to mis abuelos feel the same way. They don't like Trump, but flowery Democratic language feels very fake and elitist. My dad harps on that a lot.

Have any of you studied the design of experiments from a technical perspective? I find myself wondering why the corrections you discuss seem to be focused solely on a few gross demographic factors that may have only loose correlations to how people feel and vote. It doesn’t seem like you have anyone there who is into social psychology or actually understanding the voters as people. Without that, you’re always going to miss root causal factors and key interactions. It seems like you’re just shotgunning at first order effects based on demographic factors alone.

If I am a minority who happily works in the oil industry, which candidate tangibly threatens my future the least? Apparently (at least according to early anecdotal evidence coming out of various news outlets) that wasn't an easy call to make this time around. LOL it's probably really really bad that I know who Piketty was and only have an Associate degree and also watch 538 and am female. From my perspective folks are using the results all wrong - it's not just education, it's not just women, it's not just uninformed -- proximity of opportunity does sound more realistic (thanx Claire). Hopefully the pandemic teaches corporate America that where you are at doesn't matter, work can be done all over this country. But it's not only rural America - it's also equality in the cities -- they are becoming too expensive for average Americans to live in. Honestly both parties are in danger if a group in the middle crafts a future that features a practical, fair long term platform, that focuses on spreading out opportunity across the country. Edited to add - Perry is highlighting a problem with both parties -- They need some new folks in there, the older folks need to retire and mentor the younger and both parties need seek out new ideas. I know that I personally believe that there should be a mandatory Federal Government retirement age of 70. Not that those over 70 aren't valuable but they can volunteer and provide their expertise that way. Many of my family members took a lot of convincing to go out and vote - they are all convinced we're in a rut and it makes no difference what they do - the same folks will always be in charge.

I think there is far too much analysis and second-guessing on class/education here and not enough focus on the fact that Trump was an incumbent celebrity. Remove those elements from future elections and I’m sure the landscape would be very different.

Campers, Am I wrong here or does the refusal of Perry to allow proper illumination of his face a distraction? A quote from Earl Moore, drummer from 'Clown' the Ike Willis band from the 70's on beach in LA ... "Yuh notice how the further the bloods get down the beach, the more their features fade?" Hey, if Sidney Poitier can accept lighting arrangements, Perry can. It''s hurting the show. h.

honestly this probably has more to do with auto-exposure being prejudice toward light skin tones. The camera thinks his face is shadow and doesn't expose properly for it. It exposes for his wall. Notice how Nate/Galen/Clare have super blown out background? It's because the auto-exposure is recognizing their face and exposing for it. I'm not making this up, it's an issue in image recognition in computer programming and back in the 80s there was a big issue with Kodak making film that rendered darker skin tones badly. And it was/is in their marketing materials now how you *can* expose for both light and dark skin tones. In the past, you just couldn't get a good rendering of dark skin tones on kodak film. It wasn't *made* do to that.

It's geography, not race. Perry, in Kentucky, probably has the worst internet connection. Nate's used to be bad also (even though I'm pretty sure he lives in NYC), but it's improved over the past month or two.

Dear people, it does not matter which religious community you belong to or not, how you pray or meditate. :) The main thing is to lead a life of charity. Jesus died on the cross as an atonement for all. Fully spiritualized, He ascended to heaven. Since then our Almighty GodJeus has been spiritually with everyone and eagerly waits for recognition, exclusively in his own heart! See Matthew 7: 7 God is very much alive, He knows every heart, He knows that every person will create their trials on earth, he always holds fast to Jesus, whatever happens !! Our Almighty God is spiritually and spiritually we have to want to find him and that only happens in ourselves in the heart. He loves us very much and longingly patiently waits for every responsible person (all those in need of protection are God's children anyway) to communicate with him mentally and spiritually. Trust in God's presence, repent, repent, also pray for your loved ones ...... go into your heart !!! According to the Bible, we live at the end of the end times. Sodom and Gomorrah in the most violent measure can no longer be overlooked in our world! This time the ark is Jesus himself and if you don't ascend, you will perish.......amen
