I've heard so much about what the Dutch think of Belgians, it was time I crossed the border to get the other side of the story. Check out the video to see the responses!

In my experiences with Belgians, I often get the feeling that they distrust me as a Dutchman. They are reserved and sometimes I get the feeling they are rather underhanded. People like in this video I have only rarely come across, a pity, a real pity.

Definitely! I feel like mostly the south of the Netherlands feels this way cause we're closer to eachother, idk about the rest of the Netherlands though. Honestly if we have beef with anyone, I think Germany falls into that category more than Belgium. Because of the 2 wars they started 😬 I know a lot of older people especially don't trust Germans.. I've only heard good things about Belgians though and if they weren't good, they were just mean jokes but I've never met anyone who seriously hates Belgians or anything. I'd rather not associate with people like that anyways.

I was pleasantly surprised by the positive opinions of the Belgian people interviewed in Antwerp about their northern neighbors. I must say it puts the Belgians in a very flattering and endearing light. I can't help but wonder if one would get the same kind of response in Brussels or Wallonia. I myself am a white Caribbean man from Curaçao where we have a more complicated relationship and opinion about the Dutch. I love the Netherlands. I lived for 15 years in Amsterdam. People were often perplexed by my strange accent and European looks. I can't count the times I was asked whether I'm Belgian or Scandinavian. Then I would tell them I'm Caribbean. By the way, I personally love Belgium and the Belgians. My experience as a tourist in Belgium is very positive. Brugge and Ghent are two of the most beautiful cities I know.

I've spent a lot of time in Belgium as a Dutch man. Met people at a festival I'm friends with to this day back in 2009. I have to say, I think Dutch openness is really a "script". I think that the Dutch are completely open to engage with new people... insofar the script permits, as the Dutch are very consensus-oriented people. When I was in Belgium once asking directions, I walked up to a group of Flemish people in Ghent and just asked them, and they were somewhat startled at first. And once they knew my intentions, they lit up and answered. I think that's a pretty decent analogy for how Belgian people are with you. You do have to cross a longer birdge to reach them, but once you do, you're also less likely to be kept at arm's length once there. The Dutch are more open in public, but more reserved in private.

Yeah, I've read so many stories of foreign students coming to the Netherlands and having a very hard time making Dutch friends. To be honest though, it's not like being Dutch suddenly makes that easier. It's just that we tend to settle on our friends quite early in our lives.

As a Belgian in Amsterdam, it was more of a culture shock than I expected. Especially the agenda, how to make friends. It is true that we are a bit more closed, reserved, 'de kat uit de boom kijkend'. But now, when I go back to Belgium, I come across as very opinionated :) also, I read that when girls grow up they learn to speak in a certain pitch, and Dutch women speak in a lower pitch than Flemish women. Si fe living here I have adapted the pitch of my voice, because not being as tall and with a high voice, it was hard to be taken seriously 😆

As a belgian I think one of the biggest reasons we are more timid, not so outspoken and not as proud as French, Dutch, Germans, etc.. is because we always struggled with our identity, we've been ruled over so many times through history (by the dutch, by the spanish, by the french, etc) and only "recently" turned into our own country created by the English as a buffer between the European powerhouses (we have the Dutch to our north, Germans to our east, french in the south and english in the west). And even then we got fucked over in both world wars. All of that combined with 3 official languages in 1 country makes that the majority of us dont have a strong connection with our country and monarchy (except when our national team plays football)

The Francophones don't mind being west and south in contact with France, they even accept the French cultural domination like any other region of France : its normal when people speak exactly the same language wether in Lille, Bruxelles, Paris or Liège. Wow! Another interesting insight video. An American inquiring in Belgium on their opinion of the Dutch. I have Belgian friends, who I dearly love to have around. Once a year, January, I go to the „soldes" (sale) in Antwerp. It's funny hearing the Brazilian Belgian saying the Dutch have a funny accent. I love the Belgian accent. It makes me mellow. They sound so sweet. They are regarded overpolite, since they use the formal „u" while in the Netherlands we use „jij" for regular conversation, while "u" is used for elder and higher ranked or people you do not know. You use „jij / jou" constantly since in English there is no distinction. I took my Belgian people to Dutch parties, and I went with them to Belgian parties. They told me that Belgians anxiously await the arrival of Dutch people, since they will get the parties started. The Dutch have no reservations, so they talk, they dance, they drink, while the Belgians tend to be way more aloof. 🎊💃🎉🕺👯

I would love to say the same, but I have come across too many Belgians that could not stand it when a Dutchman or our Dutch national team did very well in championships. It might be a small subset of Belgians and it is indeed confined to sports but what I witnessed was not just a healthy rivalry, they resented that we did better than them. May be it is subsiding and it is reminescent of how we Dutch envied (if that is it) the Germans for always beating us or when they again became Weltmeister...This is something unknown from NL towards Belgium. I day to day life I have again only positive things to say about Belgians.

I have that with no country at all (could be me) but from all countries I have been to Denmark and the Danes were most similar and I also noted that with Danes that I worked with in NL. They are really like a twin brother that I never knew existed.

I thought the same.. there might be some confounding bias in this. With Belgians being less direct, they therefore probably instinctively give the more socially acceptable (positive) answers, maybe even unknowingly to themselves. It could be so culturally ingrained that they think they answer honestly, but might later reflect and only then remember the negative things they also could’ve added. Now I don’t know if this is the case, but it could be.

In the Netherlands, from a young age, they teach us to speak up. As soon as you enter school at 4yo every Monday you're expected to summarize your weekend in front of the entire class. Later on you're asked/tasked to form opinions about different subjects rather than just learning about them.

This here. Now I don't know if this is a global thing or just my middle school because I only went to one middle school but... Schools here have "maatschappijleer" which to those not in the know is basically everything related to current day politics and socially acceptable practice in society. The norms and values of the world around us so to speak. But what I loved about how we did the subject is that they basically told everyone, as long as you can properly vocalize and support your opinion it can not be graded as wrong on tests. So say there's a politician and you absolutely hate their guts. Now if on a test you're like oh yea fck him because he's a big fat poopy face, yea alright that's a fail even if the teacher hates him as well. But if the teacher loves the dude and you say I dislike him because he has a and b and c policy and that hurts the way I or my friends or parents want to live life, instant points no matter how much the teacher disagrees with you. It's been pretty encouraging to voice my opinion on things but also to properly sit down and see how I want to voice it because it truly does matter when you disagree about something whether you can do so calmly and respectfully.
@moslimislam5714
@moslimislam5714 Жыл бұрын
@@reznovvazileski3193 Yep XD. I remember when Islam was the topic. The teacher started saying lies/mistakes and I felt like I had to step up and correct him. We had a civil discussion and I pointed out his mistakes by displaying the contrary showing evidence from our scriptures. We even had discussion about homosexuality. You really learn that it is okay to have an opinion, vocalize it and agree to disagree as long as you maintain respect for each other. I hope the room for discussion will always be present. I feel like it is disappearing and slowly replaced for blind indoctrination.

@@moslimislam5714 Yeah idk what happened but somewhere along the way many people fell to the fallacy that only 1 opinion can be correct at a time. Though obviously for two entirely different people two entirely different things are going to be objectively better to their lives. So their opinions are going to differ and both be correct in their own perspective already that way. This is why being adult enough to agree that you can't see things the same is so important for a functioning society. More so even now everyone can voice their opinion to the entire world in 3 seconds.

It's the same (well, it *was* the same but no longer) in the US, going back a long time. I'm in my early 40s; as a child my family lived in every region of the US and I remember that summarizing your weekend in front of the class used to be common/standard practice in primary schools across the country, no matter the region, religious affiliation, political leanings, student demographics or socioeconomic status of the school. It was simply a matter of greater societal values (encouraging public/social assertiveness, individualism, etc.) and "this is what we do as Americans". I don't know when it went out of style, I just remember learning (as an adult) that it's rarely done in public schools anymore. Another practice that used to be common/standard (but that I learned is also increasingly rare now) in American public primary schools is Show & Tell (where you bring in a special object or pet from your personal life and give the class a presentation on it to display what your interests and opinions are- a first lesson in public speaking). My family also lived in/on 11 other countries and islands around the world; when I started a new school in the Philippines I excitedly asked my teacher when the next Show & Tell was going to be and she was shocked- she couldn't understand why I would want to do something so "flashy" and "ungracious". ... I can totally understand how Belgians would feel mortified by these kinds of cultural differences, given their values and temperaments.

I think this is because we also have a certain directness which is more like the Dutch. So maybe this is why. I spend alot of time in the Netherlands. Mostly for music festivals and i always get along very well with the Dutch. Their "directness" doens't feel very rude to me. I guess because i'm more used to it than the rest of Belgium.

The Dutch are indeed very upfront, which can be good but sometimes it's not appreciated, and I noticed that about myself too haha since some of my family aren't from the Netherlands😅😅 Also, I was impressed at how you understand them so well when other non-native speakers find it very difficult. Because accents and dialects are difficult to distinguish or understand if you have not learned the language from an early age. For example, many people here in the Netherlands think that accents from Limburg and Brabant sound the same, but that is not true. Or that people from the north are unintelligible. So it's pretty cool that you can follow them so well, it shows how long you've been in the Netherlands. Great content and I hope you continue showing the world your journey and interviews😊😊

just a question that popped up in my mind while watching the video… don’t you use the “u/uw” version in Dutch instead of “je/jouw” while you’re interviewing people (and elders specially)? Or do you ask first the person if it’s ok to refer to them as “je”? I’m asking that since most of the times someone will come over as rude to them if you just choose to refer to them as “je” and asume they feel comfortable that way. There are many cases as well were they actually love being refer as “je/jouw” so it’s always a 50/50 chance that I’m still struggling with hahaha😅 Either way, thank u so much for the video! I work in customer care for the Dutch and Belgium market. Us Dutchies sure are more straight forward. Belgium people speak a lot in "twijfeltaal". They use a lot of contradictory words. You ask them, is everything okay? They will say: Nee nee.. Ooh it's not, what is wrong than? Nee nee, het is precies goed. Like.. is it good or not??? And they always sound very insecure. What I find very funny, because its something I've noticed for years and thought was rude. When they call and I answer. They do NOT greet you most of the time and they seldom say bye or have a nice day. They just hang up when you say, have a nice day. Or they say okay/thanks and hang up. Hahahah

Belgian people are our brothers and sisters. We often share blood lines and family bonds especially in the south. Sometimes we are rivals (especially during football games of our national teams and cycling) but at the end of day there is a lot of love. What I like about Belgian people is that they are very polite and nice, their food culture is much better than in the Netherlands and their cities and landscapes are more beautiful than ours. So if a country would decide to attack Belgium I would definitely join my Belgian brothers to fight💪

Het was interessant om te kijken. Ik ben geen nederlander en ook geen belger maar duitser en vind de verschillen tussen de twee landen interessant.

Belgium and the Netherlands have a weird relationship. We both come from the same original country, the Seventeen Provinces. History has separated us and two different nations grew out of this. But the connection is still there and I feel like we love eachother and stand by eachother when it matters. Warm greetings to my Dutch brothers, from a boring dumb Belgian :-D

I actually do not think the feeling is mutual. I am Dutch, I like Belgium and the Belgians a lot but I do not feel at home or that we are family. For that we are to my mind way too different. The point to me is: I like that difference and Belgium has different things to offer we simply lack. So it is to my mind good, but I do not feel a connection actually. But it could also be that I am the exception. I live pretty close to Belgium, the border is a 40 minute drive or so and there are LOADS of Belgian tourists where I live.

I do say the same things you said in the beginning, but thats only because of directness. Overall I love belgian people. We are basically family members because our history and culture is so intertwined, and family members can be pretty mean to eachother because they are so close. Belgium is great in my opinion. If they are critical of us, I couldnt be offended, I'd turn the other cheek. We joke about eachother, basically, and I think thats funny. Also their beer is better.

Important distinction: you asked the Flemish. They are naturally looking more at their fellow Dutch speaking northern neighbour. The Dutch in comparison are sympathetic with their southern neighbours, but generally don't think so much about them. I would like to see a comparison one day of how often Netherlands is mentioned in the Flemish News, vs Belgium in the Dutch news.

I watch both and in my opinion it's definitely the other way around. Especially in humoristic tv shows belgium get's mentioned very often on Dutch tv while the other way around allmost exclusively when there's a Dutch person present.

to be fair when we dutch people think about belgians we think about flemish people, and we totally ignore the walloons even though they are half of the country

@@inigo9000 thanks, I would say in comedy it's mutual. I mean there were various Dutch players and jury members on De Slimste Mens in Belgium. But are you sure about news? Many times I turned on Flemish news they compare themselves to the Netherlands.

@@erikthehalfabee6234 As a Belgian (from Flanders) often watching the national news, I dont' think that I ever heard them mention the Netherlands (unless it was directly relevant)

@@TheGjojo Sure, it's just one man's observation and i used to watch a lot more Flemish news ten years ago (before digital tv you could change the order of the TV channels). Maybe not so much Dutch news, but it struck me that the Flemish often compared their own parameters with the Netherlands.
