I have seen alot of hunting tactics and Bob the burger boy videos . I feel like I'm 9 yrs old talking to my dad asking every question and direction on how , why when ,where ,. I shot my first buck at 7 sitting with the old man. Then when I could cary a gun I sat where he sat me and walked miles when we still hunted the whole time he never stopped teaching me I learn new stuff every year im 42 now been bow hunting since I was 13 this is the first year I haven't hunted bow season covid put alot of hunters in woods alot longer with the increase cam thieves that got my hoyt I can't replace it due to money its been the hardest deer season ever. So far. The corn piles. we can't bait here in maine and I could never sit over a bucket/bait great video bro I binge watch them seeing our bow season started last week im dying to get in the woods keep up the great job I sent links to your u tube to everyone I know.good luck keep em coming

Big woods forest deer in northern states and mountainous forested regions in the south, also target lichens and mosses as reliable food sources. Particularly when fall foods have been consumed, on through winter until spring green up.

100% agree on the buck thorn observation. Thats been my experience as well. They love it, especially late season when it's the only green thing left.

Another great video, I wish a lot of guys that do bait could watch this video. Every time it gets brought up they get defensive about it and don’t really look at what it’s doing to their hunt! I’m not against it, but when I gave it up a few decades ago it really opened up much more opportunity

Another awesome video from a legend! I’ve learned too that a freshly cut tree from logging , the tops that are left become an absolute magnet and they’ll come and devour anything that is left at the tips of them as soon as they find it!

You are right I hunt SC and it's a legal bait state but years ago I had property were you couldn't bait. Thinking back about it now I really enjoyed that part of it more than I do watching a corn pile. Time to do it the old way again. Appreciate you talking about it.

I try not to comment on his videos because he’s a boss!!! But I will say that in Southern Ohio I have shot 15 bucks over 140 up to 170! Now I also learned from my grandfather how to still hunt in snow. Blood trail and then as I got out of highschool started scouting non stop. With that said most landowners in Ohio bait. I only have 15 acres and killed all those bucks over bait. Not to mention my lease partner who’s killed just as many. Corn piles can be outrageously awesome down their. But if I had 200 acres I would definitely hunt scrapes and move around more.

To touch on the acorns, I’ve seen hit and miss years. Seems like some years there just aren’t many with other years sounds like it’s raining when the wind blows. In either case, deer density still seems to be in those thick areas with occasional deer coming to specific oak trees when there is a good crop of acorns from that tree or group of trees. Just from my observations, it seems closely related to squirrel population. Found a few trees last year that had good acorns, but there were a ton of squirrels working them. Deer would come in close to dark and get what they could from it, but they were very close to their bedding and on the edge of the wood line with good visibility to danger. I think the squirrels will have it wiped out this year, and then the squirrels will have to move on, and then the acorns will come back. Probably a 2-3 year cycle.

Great advice and understanding of baiting, not a fan of baiting anymore, no need for me. If somebody's baiting a spot I can usually cut them off before they get to that person because they don't get there till dark to feed. Myself I like to call them to me , hunting there travel corridors

I had a friend who baited every year he said he never see big bucks i mad him and his dad a bet that I could shoot one off there property. He said no way you can its on . I went up in spring found where buck was bedding shot a 137 with my bow .I told him he was going to come buy him buy dark to feed . I like hunting with guys like that .I always get kicked off the land lol. If I bait I don't hunt over it .it's just to keep deer healthy and in the area.

Awesome! Love your shirts. I would love to see a video of buck vs doe bedding, and being able to tell between the two in specifics. Yes does tend to bed in circles/groups, but a Single buck can make a ring of beds. There can be rubs all over or no rubs in sight. Scrapes or no scrapes. Would be very informative to learn and be able to see a clear difference while looking at it.

I love and share your thoughts on baiting. It makes deer go nocturnal. I'd take it a step further and question why a buck would need to lay down a bunch of scrapes (other than by instinct) when he knows where all of the ladies will be after dark. Every bait pile is like a singles bar for the bucks. In northern Wisconsin (and I'm sure many other places), many hunters bait in self-defense: they figure that the guy a 40 over is baiting, so they would never see a deer unless they had their own pile. It's sad, really. I fear that our next generation of hunters, the vidiots, can only remain on stand with a pile in front of them. Thanks Dan for telling it how it should be: get out and HUNT!
@BrotherWind
@BrotherWind 3 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that, because my anecdotal experience is the exact opposite. It’s the Boomers that I know who hunt private, bait, and don’t explore public land. The under 40 hunters I know all hunt almost exclusively public, are mobile hunters, and have zero interest in baiting. I guess it’s just easier to crap on the millennials
@smallfishbigpond5047
@smallfishbigpond5047 3 жыл бұрын
Agree with the boomers comment! It's primarily the old white guys who bait. They are stuck in the past and are too old and lazy to change. I'm 55 and getting to be that old white guy but i have never baited and never will.

What does it mean if you find like 50 rubs in an area tall grass area with some trees in between two fields then rubs all down the sides of fields
@thehuntingbeast
@thehuntingbeast 3 жыл бұрын
It simply means bucks spent some time there doe some reason... Doe area? food? travel between? What it tells you is there might be a target in the area. You still need to determine where he is moving in daylight.
