When a child cries or acts up, perhaps we can say, "I see that you are upset about something" to give context to an expression and teach children emotion literacy rather than using distractions and treating negative emotions as something to be ignored. I did the same with my own children when they were preschoolers.
@wongshiying
@wongshiying 3 жыл бұрын
YES! Being able to self-regulate, recognising and learning how to deal with negative emotions is something that we need to teach. I'm studying a degree in Early Childhood Education by the way. Although i don't agree with some of the principles in the video, it gave an insight into what we preschool educators do. :)

Please never neglect the children’s emotions by distracting them. I’m very concerned about who has trained this educator. Please calmly ask the little friends about how we could help them when they are feeling sad, ‘I truly/sincerely understand you are feeling sad because...’ This educator might not be trained to work with infants and toddlers who require a lot of strongly and positively secure attachments and healthy relationships. This educator doesn’t have enough ability to meet the children’s physical and mental needs for reassurance and comfort. Remember children can only gain holistic development if they are nurtured in secure attachments and healthy relationships.

What does ECE in SG do? Depends on the school you are in... Some of the teachers whom I know of had to do almost everything in their school, - daily checking of student's health before entry ( mouth, hands, feet & temperature - preparing for meals (and cleaning up, washing bowls) - writing lessons plan (with research) - preparing lesson materials (not just print out papers for children, those are "worksheets", we have to make learning as authentic/realistic as possible to engage children, some materials can take up to 1 hour or more just for 1 lesson, eg. Lesson on Transportation, we will cut out a big cardboard box and paint it to make a car/bus/fire engine) - observations (they need to be documented down for each child on their growth & learning and helps us to determine how to carry out future lessons to make learning meaningful & enjoyable) - helping them to have a good rest during nap time (so they don't go around waking other kids, it will eat up your time for paperwork, and with better rest, they tend to be more energetic & better mood for afternoon classes) - building rapport / bond with parents to enhance their learning and also to have a better understanding of the children in different aspects - excursions (preparing for trip, safety measures during trips, activities, etc) - going outdoors (this is also a lesson, but we focus on motor skills development - carrying out lessons (they don't always progress the way you want them to, that's when you have to be always on your toes to think of solutions to guide children's attention back to the topic you want to teach) - managing children with different needs in a classroom (and also carrying out suitable class rules to make the day more manageable, some teachers encountered children hitting them, one even threw a chair at the teacher) - events (planning, organising, etc) - always on the look out for children's safety, physically & mentally (from falling down a chair to young kid's biting, children's allergies, dangerous objects in a class etc ) - toileting (undressing & dressing of children, showering, peeing, pooping, hand washing) - preparing for parents & teacher meeting/conference at least once or twice a year to update on child's progress - handling incidents, like when a child vomits, children fighting, children get injured (as well as possibly making it a teaching moment for children, how they can response to help with the situation) - practice what you preach (children learns/ picks up what they observed better than what you teach them, you want them to be polite, you be a model yourself) - grooming them (so they look tidy after a day of exploration 😅) - other adhoc includes medicine feeding (important on amt & timing), fees payment, catching bugs or chasing lizards out because some kids or even teachers are terrified of them 😅, a bonus if you have interesting items like that bird whistle which this teacher JX has, knowing what is trending among children so they feel closer bond to you, taking time to teach values (which I think is very important apart from academic performance) LAST and MOST IMPORTANTLY, You must LOVE your children! When you truly LOVE them, they can feel it! Actions speaks louder than words! I am proud to know of some wonderful and responsible teachers out there to whom I look up to! Learnt a lot from many of them! It is also important to keep a big heart and not let some black sheeps affect your love for educating the children! 😀

ITS NEVER EASY to work with children’s, maybe from the outside people find it fun or so cuteee you work w kids but trust me it’s mentally tiring and draining. but of course, it’s satisfying to see the child smile or happy because of u. mentally stress is also something we’ll deal with... and plus if the place is toxic it makes it 10x worst 😭

But all these opportunities are for ppl who have higher qualification. Then whats the point of having so many opportunities? How about people who have lower qualifications and interested to be working in the secto. Workplace nowadays are always looking for higher qualification candidates for their job role when the position doesn't even need that requirements.

Why is it whenever there’s an interview on early childhood education it’s always about n2-k2 . Early childhood is from infant to k2 . Why no one ever bother to interview or talk about infant educarer , playgroup or Nursery educarer . Like hello we’re also part of early childhood education.
